    If you can't teach embedded systems on a 16 bit micro, with a power supply, a function generator, a 10MHz scope and a breadboard with basic components, then you aren't teaching embedded systems. And yeah, you don't need more than a 1GHz WinXP box to run a lightweight IDE and programmer. Why would you need more? What good reason justifies spending tons of money on non-basics when you're trying to teach people the basics?

    Another problem is leaks. Pumping air out is easy because it expands to reach your pump, but water would need drainage tubes. Hitting a puddle at 800mph is a bit of a bitch.

    How is battery life and camera on CM? I have an S3, and on my old phone I went full CM and loved it, but heard the actual usability was pretty crap on non-stock for the S3.

    Yeah, new Surface Pros with AMD Kabini chips and 4GB RAM would have hit the sweet spot. Once you cut out the Intel tax there is more left for MS, or they could have lowered the price and actually sold a few.

    I heard one idea of using the water supply as shielding. If we could get the water from the moon it would save a lot of energy lugging it out of the gravity well.

    They could do a 'reverse-slingshot' maneuver to bleed off speed using one of Mars's moons.

    As to landing, yeah, thruster-based is really the only option. Maybe some way of using some of that shielding as a propellant would work to cut down weight. If they land in the right spot they can dig for more water once they are down.

    If a comet comes along at the wrong angle, the human race is toast. I really think our best bet is to get some people off this planet, and self sustaining, ASAP. Maybe if we stopped killing each other for a while we might have the resources to do so.

    Unlike you, Mr Spock, people have these things called "emotions" which cause them to act irrationally, particularly during stressful times. I would not put it past somebody to horde information if they thought they might be fired, consequences of prison be damned.

    You forget Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If you don't have a job, you could lose your food and the roof you sleep under, both things which are provided in prison. Besides, what are the chances of getting caught, some time in the future, compared to getting even, today?

    Yeah, I was thinking that too. Maybe if you use SATA to IDE converters and only read contiguous blocks 99% of the time. Otherwise I haven't seen a single 'cheap' spinny disk which can match an SSD in anything except capacity.

    An HDD *can* be recovered, but only if you're lucky will you actually get any of your data out. Having an HDD over an SSD is no reason to feel that your data is 'safe'.

    Sexual dimorphism is not caused by "societal norms", it is caused by genetics and specifically testosterone.

    It is started by testosterone, but societal norms reinforce what would otherwise be a much smaller difference.

    Also, remember that muscle mass only helps for short-duration exercise. When it comes to extended things, like 50 mile treks through jungle or ultra-marathons, women are just as competitive if not better than men.

    BS. Guys just do different types of/more exercise because that's the societal norm. If you asked a female to do the work every time you needed something carried or a jar opened you'd be a wimp too. Sure testosterone plays a role, but almost any woman can get strong if they eat and train right. And by strong I mean sincerely fuck up 99% of the male population. Why? Because most people don't exercise to their potential.

    Why does it have to be profitable? If the economic benefits on the area are great enough it will pay for itself through economic growth. That's what governments are for, to finance things that benefit the people but don't necessarily make a profit.
