Wow, I've been looking for a descriptive noun to describe Katz for weeks. I was gonna go with "cocktoast" but I think you've hit the nail on the head. Nice going!
Any time I hear the little fragments of a phrase in a/. article that sound like "...expected..." "...will scale...by 2002..." and then goes on to talk about the budget for the project, my bullshit detector goes off.
First of all, this is not an existent configuration. It's barely even an existent plan for a configuration. Secondly, it refers to a computing device that none of us will likely ever see or have any reason to see.
You know guys, it's okay to let a few hours go by without a news story, if there's nothing really going on. I know the trolls will get lonely, but what do you care?
I saw a video of Ice T at a pimping convention one year and he said "Yeah, I sang 'Cop Killer,' and if the police don't like eat they can eat a bowl of dicks." That was the day that Ice T became the coolest guy in the universe.
Who's to say that you're offering them something better? Keep in mind that the kind of professionals you're looking for are not 'hacks,' man. They are highly skilled technical workers who have the market power to spit on your neck if you offer them second-rate bennies. Pony up or answer to the economy.
Boy, it's a good thing that I would never in a million years download a song I can hear on the radio over and over and over again. That trojan stuff might piss me off!
To be honest with you, I've found that the problems that low-quality MP3s usually have come from audio artifacting, where strange squeals and washes come in and out of the mix. Usually noise and static-sounds don't enter into it, and even that weird artifacting effect tends to go away when you encode your MP3's at 192 kb/s. Perhaps you have some other problem in your audio system that prevents good fidelity between your sound card and your stereo system. Are your levels peaking and distorting your stereo's preamp? Are the levels too low so that you have to crank up your stereo and you get all the additional noise that goes with it?
One way you can prevent problems like this is if you have a Sound Blaster Live and a Dolby Digital receiver, you can send a digital signal out from your sound card into your stereo, preventing EMF and connection noise problems, as well as keeping a good control on the audio levels going into your receiver. That's what I do, and it sounds great.
Shit, I can't name a single/living/ scientist. All the scientists I know are dead. I don't know if I think of Stephen Hawking as a scientist or more accurately as a mathematician...all this is just making me sadder and sadder that Carl Sagan is dead. The 2000's were really the era for which he was born. Anyone who hasn't read "The Demon-Haunted World" is really missing out on some inspiring reading. To quote my friend Jimmy:
If I just put up a web page that had a picture of Carl Sagan with the caption "I am a total badass," that would be about the greatest act of social responsibility of which I would be capable.
A very weird conflict of views that exists in America is that foreign IT workers (esp. software developers) almost always get abused in America, but where they stand it's considered being pampered. When someone says that they are against the increase in foreign labor, it doesn't necessarily mean they are being chauvinistic. Our standards in America continue to evolve toward a fairer wage and better treatment, but these standards are constantly undercut by how easy it is for corporations to hire a foreign worker and pay him/her a substandard wage, because it seems perfectly fair to him/her. It's as if the standard of living of Americans might increase, but it can't because the jobs of other Americans depend on how well they do things that prevent that increase.
And if it's true that unions are cartels that simply restrict the availability of labor, I wouldn't worry about it too much. After all, I can think of a million things I would rather do than work for my company...and if my company is prevented from selling their hideously overpriced and useless widgets for a few days to people who really don't need them, well, I don't think that's gonna cripple the economy.
Seems like a decent enough read. I wonder if there is a text available (in a deadtree format) that can provide a get-into-it type of method for people like myself: Familiar with Linux in only a superficial way, but really keen to set it up for simple network tasks because of its stability. I've been aching to set up a Linux proxy/firewall but I don't even know where to start.
It's CLASS ACTION you jackass. That means the plaintiff is every Microsoft product consumer in California. I know we're not lawyers here but don't you at least watch TV? Before you start criticizing what is admittedly a hastily put-together article based on breaking news, why don't you GET WISE SUCKER!
I don't think that I'm the first person to wonder if this XBox thing is anything more than just a series of plans right now. I also don't think I'm the first one to have suspected MS of vaporware releases -- really looking forward to that consumer OS based on the NT kernel.
I suspect that all these press pushes regarding the XBox aren't really done with the goal of trying to inform anyone of MS's plans -- they are done so that MS can manipulate the electronic gaming market. It's kind of the same thing that Ronald Reagan did with Star Wars: release plans to the press, scare the world with Grade A FUD. Does anyone remember precisely what percentage of the Star Wars system was actually deployed?
Well, I do: precisely zero percent. The point I'm trying to make here is that if the FUD is potent enough, it's not even necessary to release an actual product.
Freedom of choice is what you've got
Freedom from choice is what you want.
What more true statement could you come up with for 2000? Devo still rules. Somehow they have the clearest voice of the modern free software movement.
It is a bit biased, but the author makes good points.
Jeez, Nerds. If being biased was something that we considered a bad thing, we wouldn't be visiting Slashdot at all.
Now, that being said, I didn't find this article to be all that informative at all. It was in fact a bit childish, with all that grousing about how KDE is deemed "politically incorrect" by GNOME advocates because of its use of proprietary tools. Yes, Open Source is something that a lot of us hold dear. We like the idea as something more than just a poke in the eye of the powers that be. It's the only development model that consistently finds and encourages people who really care about what they are doing. It's such an appealing idea to a lot of us that we tend to resist anything that doesn't stick to the ideal from beginning to end, solely for purposes of idealism.
I'm not saying KDE is a better or worse desktop than GNOME at all, and I don't really want to get into that here. I just think it goes beyond that -- not just "what are you putting out" but "what were the principles behind doing it" that decides for me what I will use. Don't whine about people staying true to their ideals, for crying out loud. IANMarthaStewart but that's a Good Thing!
Before everybody jumps on the Slashdottically Correct bandwagon and starts screaming at mp3board, please keep in mind that these kinds of lawsuits are not always adversarial. They could simply be looking for a clarification of the law that may favor the both of them.
Try "Leonard Cohen."
But regardless of your disregard for spelling names correctly, thanks for mentioning him and that song because they are both great. I always think about "Everybody Knows" every time I have to buy something from Microsoft, Wal-Mart, or Time-Warner, or anytime my ex comes over to pick up some of her stuff. You hit the nail on the head.
I am writing to you today to discuss something that I know you are very firmly decided upon: Jar Jar.
Still, I think another appeal is worth the effort; based on my experiences with Episode 1 and the presence of one Jar Jar Binks, I can never be talked into going to see one of your movies again. However, there are a lot of people, most of them at Slashdot, who are still willing to give you another shot at producing a really fun and compelling story. But they will abandon you if you once again sacrifice quality for technical interest.
Please, George...Mister Lucas...do not simply disregard my sentiments for the sake of single-minded CG accomplishment. Listen to what I say for the sake of your own income and self-esteem.
Love,
heymanslowdown
P.S. Put a whole lot of Natalie in this one. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.
This information is great to hear, because it leads me to believe that I will fulfill my lifelong dream of having a fully functioning BeOS in my pants.
There is plenty I can do to Windows NT or MacOS without tweaking source code.
...And I just did!
Boy, is the boss gonna be mad...It's gonna take them forever navigating around that stupid interface to find out what I did. Maybe we can call in someone from the Meta group to help us figure it out, huh?
AHA! Firstbrook's real problem is that he doesn't trust IT guys to be ruthless corporate bastard fucks like himself. Well, allow me to dissent from his opinion here. Most IT staff I know are ruthless corporate bastard fucks of the first order, and they can think of nothing more satisfying than keeping their bloodsucking employers online and selling their stupid shiny widgets to everybody in the world forever. Firing someone for making undocumented changes to a server would only be mildly satisfying, but if it's a slow day it might be fun.
I mean, come on, it's not like we're talking about guys who just got out of their moms' basements playing Quake all night. You hired them, for christ's sake -- did you hire people who would make undocumented changes to a server? Believe me, I'm definitely a member of the counterculture, and I can tell you that your IT staff does not qualify as members. SO HAVE A LITTLE FAITH!
I see this two ways -- there is in fact a Left/Right scale of politics, but it is becoming increasingly irrelevant. On the right, you have reactionary action (move backward toward the past). On the left, you have radical action (move dramatically toward the unknown). America is further to the right on this scale than you might think, but it really is not the most important issue in the world right now. I propose a second scale that goes Up/Down to measure the level of control of a political system. Anarchy is at the bottom of this scale, and totalitarianism is at the top. Again, America is way up to the top on this one. That's what people are mainly concerned about. We need to move a little further down the scale. Libertarianism is pretty near the bottom.
Or what? I'll get sued?
I know you're not a Scientologist yourself, because Scientology does not allow its members to be on the Net without special filtering software.
Well, let me flow freely on Scientology while my right to free speech is something I still hold dear: Scientology is a disgusting pyramid scheme, full of science-fiction BS, selling people into slavery for psychic snake oil. L. Ron Hubbard was a lunatic occultist who may or may not have ordered his son killed for being gay. At the very least he drove his son to suicide and should have been held accountable for it. He left the country to live on a fleet of yachts in the Mediterranean (the Sea Organization) when the US authorities had finally caught on to his scheme. Scientology organizations (all hiding behind each other) still maintain the fiction that he actually accomplished something besides fraud in his life, but are really just boldly rewriting history to suit their plans for the totalitarian domination of their member's lives. I have nothing but contempt for Scientology, and nothing but pity for people who somehow let themselves get persuaded to join such a cult.
Rand/Peikoff Objectivists are just as offensive to me. Evil=lack of empathy. Anyone who lacks empathy for his fellow humans shares responsibility for their suffering. Egotists fall clearly into this category, and Objectivists are egotists.
Any questions?

Yeah PI was pretty cool. Want to know the part I liked best? That super-powerful processor they tried to bribe him with. High Tech!
