  1. Windows XP Media Center on Home-Grown TiVo Stories? · · Score: 2, Informative

I am really surprised that no one has mentioned Windows XP Media Center. It has one thing that many other apps lack, the easy User Interface. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/

Right now you still have to buy Media Center box from a vendor like HP, but the OS is already on the filesharing networks and someone release a hack to any XP Pro machine to turn it into a Media Center. (Its on sharereactor.com - an emule network)

I am putting together a high end entertainment system for my non-technical Dad and this seemed to make the most sense.

Also, Anandtech did a nice review: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1766

I have AT&T cable modem and have gotten a few of these. I am behind a NAT router, but do not have my firewall turned on. The interesting thing is that I tried messenging the spammer back to tell him what I thought of getting this message and it was blocked. So apparently he has a firewall setup correctly.

I am really tired of reading the same moral slop that seems to be regurgitated every time there is an article on intellectual property rights. You may have morals that are different than me, so stop preaching. Let me ask you this, who decides what is morally wrong for you, politicians or yourself? Napster proved that most people do not give a shit about the law, so for most people, downloading "illegal information" is not wrong.

Boom, no more cell phone, no more tv, no more satellite internet. You could seriously harm a nation's communications by targeting their satellites. Also, it is not just consumer end stuff, but much of the backbone of the communications go through satellites. I wonder if there are any internation war laws about this. I am sure the government has already mapped out this senario, at our cost of course...

What is more interesting is if you think about what would happen if the moon was to go away (like maybe knocked out of orbit or something like that). Forget the simple things like screwing up light at night and night time criters. Think about tides and how they are directly affected by the moon. And since the weather is extremely dependant upon the temperature of the ocean, this would completely, change the weather across the globe. Colder areas would become colder and warmer areas would become warmer without some type of climate circulation. Lots of factors for a hunk of rock flying around the globe...

  14. Bluetooth and 802.11 on The Phony Conflict:802-11 & His Pal Bluetooth · · Score: 4, Interesting

Bluetooth not only lowers throughput in a 802.11b network, but if too many pico net form, it can actaully bring it down. Bluetooth started as a wire replacement, but it seems to have many more possibilities today. The best solution for Bluetooth and 802.11 is move 802.11b to 802.11a. 802.11b uses 2.4 GHz to communicate (thats also what microwaves use). Because of that, 2.4 is not regulated throughout the world. 802.11a can reach speeds up to 54 Mbps, so it will be replacing 802.11b, which can only do 11 Mbps. The good thing about 802.11a is that it tranfers at 5 GHz, so there is no interference with Bluetooth. This seems to be the best fix between the two protocols, if only 802.11a was a bit cheaper...

What really is a cult? If I start a religion does it become a cult, or does it have to wait until people are devouting their lives to it?

How about this for a definition:
A group of people who believe in something so strongly, that they are willing to adapt that particular belief into their life in some sort of worship or service, even if they have no scientific, logic, or rational for believing it.

Oh wait, that would be Christianity, and we all know that is not a cult!
