And if the best of the K-12 teachers that taught the programers that recreated the free software (and the doctors and scientists...) were compensated for thier contribution to society we wouldn't have problems finding teachers.
I know we're on/. but don't give programers more credit than they are do.
I will say that I have NOT been a fan of the Mac over the years. But OSX would convince me to move my Linux box off my desk, not out of my server room though, if I could figure out how to set my "Delete" key to be a proper backspace in vi. I spend a lot of time in vi and this is the only pain that I've had moving one of my desktop machines to OSX.
When it comes to racing games there are two kinds, arcade games and simulators.
Many people like racing game like Need for Speed, Carmagedon (sp?), but to me they just feel like toys. I seek out games that have the most realistic feeling phyics engine because they provide more real and fun racing simulation.
Actually his example works perfectly, its called research. Most many of your best doctors work long hours experimenting with new
procedures. This grant funded research makes organ transplants, cancer treatments and other medical advancements possible. In
essence it is the same thing, no I'm not saying I think it is say important the human race as hacking a piece of code.
I've read/. for a while now and if your the leader (no matter what) you'll get bashed. You can be the best (RH may or not be the best) and you'll still get bashed, especially by the people that like #2.
Maybe my life is just to exciting, but I've bored enough to spend to time and money on something that I would want to use in the first place. 9" monitor? Now PIII or Athlon in an IBM Z50... At least they can with a 14":)
I gave to several of the groups in the.org ring (including FSF). It was small in comparison to what linux, open source and free software have given me. It has allowed me to implement ideas and systems at work I would never have been able to other wise (fees, NT bullshit, etc).
Made my life easier in the long run. And I've just been able to start my own consulting buisness based on this movement.
I also have a p166 laptop which serves my needs (mainly a desktop user). I'm not going to argue if Intel will be able to compete, because I believe it is way to early to tell. But if your only getting 30 mins out of your laptop battery you need to look at the battery not the processor. I often get any where from 2.5 hours to 4 hours from one battery charge. Batteries wear out, need to be maintained (full power cycle,) etc. Also the more you use the CD the shorter the battery life. Not that you do this, but I sake my head when people ask me why their battery didn't last and they've been listening to CD's while on battery power.
This is actually really funny! first, like anyone that has ever installed Linux does not no how to get rid of it and second would want to get rid of it.
In the 4+ years I've use Linux I have never though, "Hey you know I think I'll redo this server with NT." In fact the very concept makes be chuckle.
I'm responsible for servers (Linux, Netware, NT), the network infrastruture for 55 building and the hardware for 700 institution owned computers. I have never had a user no matter the platform complain about flicker if the refresh rate was at least 75Hz, if they did I would attempt (assuming the hardward supported it) to find a higher refresh rate. I would bet money a Troll like you (who ever gave you a 2 was and idiot) could tell the differnece between 75Hz and 85Hz.
Just because you have a computer at home doesn't mean you have a clue about user support in a campus setting.
Hello? I'm in charge of @ 700 networked computers at a small liberal arts college. Over the last three years I have been installing Linux in many rolles around campus. I have setup X 50 to 70 times, it bugs the crap out of me that in a simple situation where 800 x 600 @ 75Hz would be fine I would have to take an extra 10 mins setting it up. As with most IT departments I don't have this "extra" time to waste.
Yes windows has easier monitor setup (pick plug and play, pick resolution and refresh rate) is it as powerful, NO! But there are time when you don't need the MAX out of your video hardware. You just need a good stable setting, and in these situations I would trade power for a little ease in setup.
Oh by the why the monitor on my desktop is running at 1280x1024 at 100Hz (21") and I couldn't get the same performace when it was connect to a Windows machine!
He does get to determine how much you much you pay for the guitar ($0 or more) and how that transaction takes place.

It would be nice if the editors would pick a submission that told us who Rational Software is and what they do.

EDUCAUSE manages .edu, it was switched a few months ago. They SEEM to be an organization of colleges, but I don't really know that must about them.

Taco, what color is the sky in your world?
If I where you I would reread my post before I would consider leveling personal attacks against others intelligence.

Duh! I said knew that, I just thought it was funny.
I use bill@microsoft.com (yeah, yeah I know, but the spam still goes to them) but I only use it when I'm install and software that I don't care about.

BSD people are such funny snoobs. Don't you think?
Not necessarily, don't forget AOL and WebTV users!
