Within range of my apartment, there's currently about a dozen 2WIRE843-type network names. Not sure why so many people have that particular brand of router (maybe Charter rents them?), but it's still surprising to me that everyone opted for the default SSID considering this complex is mainly comprised of young professionals, many of whom work for EPIC doing software development. Certainly not a demographic I would figure would leave the default SSID in place.

My SSID has been "RECALL SCOTT WALKER" for a year now, but nobody's ever said anything about it, and we're pretty social with our neighbors (this is a dog building, and all of us dog lovers are very friendly with each other). Come this Tuesday I'll be changing it, hopefully to "BUH BYE SCOTT WALKER".

No it doesn't, because it's being demonstrated in completely unrealistic conditions with no real world component at all. Your car analogy failed as well the instant you said "stock", because this chip wasn't stock, nor was the means to o/c it. They disabled all but one core. Who is going to do that? Nobody but an idiot overclocker looking to get a big number. They used liquid nitrogen and completely trashed all of the hardware that went into this o/c. Who is going to do that? Nobody but an idiot overclocker with either deep pockets or a corporate sponsor.

What the hell good is pumping jet fuel through an engine on a stand to see how fast you can rev it until it explodes? How useful is that measurement? How many people are going to push their engines that far? How many people are going to look at that measurement and try and apply it to a real world situation? Nobody, just other idiots doing the same meaningless things, too. Oh, he got 20k, I'll get 21k, that's moving the technology forward! Except not, 99.9% of people aren't buying engines to blow them the fuck up.

I bet even drag racers aren't pushing their engines to the point where they are completely trashed at the end of every single race. Maybe the Tony Stark billionaire playboys (there's so many of them, am I right?) are doing that because they don't give a shit about exploding an engine at the end of every quarter-mile, but most drag racers are trying to find the fastest speed they can coax out of an engine without totally trashing it. Hell, how many drivers would even want to be behind the wheel of a car that was probably going to explode at the end of the race?

That's why these o/c events need to be tied to the real world to impress me. No disabling cores, no fucking liquid nitrogen. You o/c with off the shelf components, you put the machine under load, and you show me your o/c running, under the same load, 24 hours from now. That is an impressive o/c. This is nothing more than wanking off for bragging rights.

It's a shame, because the people that should be getting the hype and recognition are the ones that are overclocking their systems while still having a modicum of stability with real-world applications and reasonable up-time, because at least that's useful to enthusiasts and pushes a real envelope as opposed to a bullshit fake one that only a very, very select few can duplicate and even fewer would even bother.

Want to impress me? Crank out stable 5+ GHz on air cooling across all the cores in an always-on machine. Playing games with liquid Nitrogen is not impressive at all. These guys are the ricers of the computer world.

I spent that year listening to such timeless classics as She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy, (Her Favorite Color is) Chrome, One More Day, and Beer For My Horses.

Unfortunately, because there was lift equipment in use on the warehouse floor, we weren't allowed to use headphones for safety reasons. After a few months of this shit (and it was always the same shit, they had a handful of mix discs they would play and they never, ever updated the selection) those of us that couldn't stand it started singing along as loudly as we could, in as exaggerated a country accent we could, throwing our own little interjections like "Hoo, doggy!" and "Yee-HAWWWWW" (complete with knee slaps) into the mix for good measure...and the boss responded by turning the music up even louder. In retaliation, one guy actually got on the P.A. to sing along with the now higher volume and got a write up for his troubles. No sense of humor at all in that bunch of shit-kicking hicks...

Everyone needs a little privacy from time to time, especially kids. Denying them their privacy, even if said privacy is escaping into a pair of headphones for a little while, seems to me almost abusive. I listened on the headphones because I was considerate of the fact that other people don't want to listen to my music. Take that away from me, and now your comfort level means as much to me as mine obviously does to you, i.e., jack fucking squat.

I grew up an Army brat with a typical 'spare the rod and spoil the child' stepfather that treated me like one of his troops and pulled shit just like the GP (I remember once he denied me the right to a lamp in my room for 3 days after "talking back" because he knew I enjoyed reading, true fucking story). All his bullshit resulted in was years of resentment that it took me into well into my adulthood to rationalize to the point where we're able to actually have a relationship at all, and it damaged not only our relationship but my relationship with my mother as well.

I don't have kids, but believe me, he taught me a lot of ways not to treat my children when I do eventually have them. I suspect GP is doing well on that front, as well.

I like a wide variety of music, from thrash/speed metal to hip hop to mbube to electronica, but when I'm trying to be productive, I usually settle in with some ambient techno/downbeat like Morcheeba, Tycho, Bonobo (love love LOVE his Black Sands album, but they're all top notch), Boards of Canada, Little People, and many others. Just recently discovered Washed Out, his Within & Without album is currently blowing my mind.

I just tend to work better when I have something that I can groove to but doesn't require a truly active ear to appreciate, and downbeat fits the bill for me. I tried listening to trance at the behest of some coworkers who swear by the stuff but it was just too frantic for me to really get into that groove I like.

I don't disagree that there are probably some that are less productive with music than without, but I know for a fact that I'm not.

I disagree with patent trolling and all this frivolous shit, too, but trying to change the penalties is going about it ass-backwards if we don't address the cause first. The courts are free to consider the element of intent in meting out a judgement, but if Youtube, a private company, decides to treat every case of infringement with a standard take-down/block and appeals process, that's their right. We may not like it, but it's their prerogative.

Youtube isn't the enemy, here. The shitty laws that are so easily abused are the enemy. We need serious IP and Patent reform, and quibbling over the punishment isn't going to do jack shit to accomplish that, especially when considering that we're talking about a private company's actions on the data on their own private servers. Everyone registering a Youtube account has to agree to their ToS, and without bothering to go and actually read it, I'd be willing to bet that there are clauses that specifically indemnify them against damages related to their routine handling of takedown requests. There's simply no way that abuse of the DMCA can be fought without fighting the DMCA itself and closing the loopholes that allow it to be abused.
