They just suspended a cop here in Madison, WI the other day for illegally downloading the movie Hall Pass while he was on duty...not only did he download it on the police computer, but he got a virus in the process which he then tried to remove himself and obviously failed because, honestly, anyone that doesn't know how to even pirate a movie safely at this point sure as shit can't remove a virus...
Best and brightest they are not.
I went to school in Georgia, and I can pretty much tell you, the entire student body fell into one of two camps after graduation: Those that went to college (about 25%) and those that went into the military and/or Law Enforcement. You can probably guess which group had higher GPAs and SAT/ACT scores. It certainly gives me the warm and fuzzies knowing the guys that used to get their jollies beating up on Freshmen and drinking beer in the parking lot are now police officers...
Also with the slow death of video rental stores, the only place to get their content will be torrents.
C'est la vie; torrenting is still the easiest and most convenient way to get the content anyway. Sooner or later these companies are going to realize that if people want to see something, they're going to see it...especially digital media. The more difficult they make it to get the content legitimately, the more people turn to The Pirate Bay and they get nothing.
Case in point, HBO Go...I recently tried to sign up for this service since I'm supposed to be eligible to get it due to being a cable subscriber (Charter), after about 6 steps into the process requiring me to use the Charter email address I've literally never touched in my 10 years as a subscriber I said "fuck it" and just download the shit illegally like I always did. I shouldn't have to do that, I'm a paying customer, but the legal process is so retarded that they make it impractical.
They'll learn, just like the record labels did. It's only a matter of time...
At the time I was quoted $99, and no, I replaced it once (with the $10 3rd-party battery). I didn't realize how unclear that was until after I submitted and really read it again, I was in a hurry....
I guess we're supposed to just chuck it and buy a new one, because yay consumerism! Fixing your devices instead of replacing them is anti-American and hurts the economy!
Please, regale us with the powerhouse motherboards you buy for $50. I would really like to see some specs on them...because I highly fucking doubt the only difference is a couple sata3 connections.
Go look at what you get for $50 in the way of a motherboard on Newegg right now. I assure you, it's going to be a horrible piece of crap, useless for 90% of applications and builds.
I mean, what the hell, is it a P4 mobo or something we're talking about here? Or something made post-2005?
Well my 3rd gen iPod's battery lasted about a year and a few months before I couldn't get more than 30-45 minutes on a charge, just long enough to be out of warranty of course, and of course I didn't buy Applecare so that meant I had to hand over $99 to Apple and wait 3 months for them to send it off to replace it. Of course, I purchased a 3rd party battery online for all of $10 dollars and replaced it myself in a whopping 3 minutes, the majority of which was spent wrestling the case apart since they make it as hard as possible to do this because, uh...buy Applecare? Luckily I did though, since, big surprise, Apple sued the manufacturer of that battery into oblivion not long after.
Maybe build quality has increased as of late (although I doubt it very highly considering the same fucking people make them) but either way, no replaceable battery is a huge failing. Anyone that falls for that bullshit is stupid. There is absolutely no legitimate reason they have for not allowing customers to replace their own batteries when they inevitably stop holding a charge, so fuck them (and anyone else that plays that game).
Hell, didn't the SCOTUS just rule that a company can preemptively block a class action lawsuit just by saying in their EULA "You are not allowed to sue us in a class action law suit? (or it's legalese equivalent)" Gee, I wonder how many EULA's don't include that language now? I'm betting not many...
That was back before anybody really knew how much money people would throw at a company that makes throwaway electronics with short shelf lives and no user replaceable parts.
Solyndra could not achieve full-scale operations rapidly enough to compete in the near term with the resources of larger foreign manufacturers
In other words, they make them real cheap in China because they're indentured servants and the government doesn't give a fuck if the people working there get poisoned or not. Unless you want our government giving even more money to China, there's no way we're ever going to be able to compete with them. We need to fucking understand that maybe, just maybe, it's time to start taking some goddamned eggs out of that basket, even if it costs more money.
Yeah, they took the money....but they didn't take it then file for bankruptcy.
What the hell difference does that make? They still got out of paying for their mistakes, they just didn't have to file bankruptcy to do it. The SEC is more of a partner to Wall Street than a regulator. Hell, they trade players back and forth every fucking year.
Either way, believe me, when the money stops flowing one direction (namely their direction) believe it, they will file bankruptcy and pull an Enron...at least, until they get ballsy enough to just put all their money offshore and tell the US Government to eat a dick when the bill comes due. Oh wait....they're already doing that...guess that's why there's such a big push for a one time Corporate Tax Holiday so they can repatriate all the money they're hiding from the IRS.
If you tried to play the games they do you'd end up in Federal fucking prison. But yeah, they're not as bad as green energy subsidies...
Or this crazy idea liberals have that humans are more powerful than the Sun and seem to forget the climate of the earth has changed many times before man even arrived.
Wow, that's just like the crazy idea a lot of conservatives have that the earth will somehow be able to cope with the copious amounts of, not only the completely toxic chemicals we pour into the environment that it's literally never had to deal with since they're not even naturally occurring at all (like plastics), but substances it can process in quantities far exceeding anything it's able to keep up with...and do all this on a time frame that is in any way conducive to human survival.
But, you know, God will fix everything when he Raptures all the believers up to heaven. These earthly concerns don't matter, back to church. Our kids can always deal with it later. Besides, why inconvenience ourselves to help those not even yet born? Do they pay taxes? I don't think so!
I'm still waiting on a bug to be fixed that dates back to version 4 beta. It's not something trivial, I get a BSoD after about 15-20 minutes of regular use. I've looked online, I've submitted bugs, I've done just about everything they've suggested, save one: 'Turn off Crossfire whenever I use their browser', and frankly, that's in no way a real solution at all. Every other suggestion has been useless and not fixed the problem, and the problem continues to persist with every release...and based on the number of people that reported a similar problem, it's not just a handful of people either.
I used to love Firefox, but they broke it horribly for me. If the problems were fixed in this accelerated release cycle I could care less (provided the handful of plugins I use continued to work, but it seems like add-on developers and Mozilla are pointing fingers at each other as to why they don't) but they aren't. How many more times am I supposed to download a new version of Firefox and test it to see if it still can't handle Crossfire?
Guess I'm stuck using Chrome. Man, I really miss NoScript and GreaseMonkey, though...
Obviously there needs to be real people tied to these accounts, they're not worth anything if they're fake people or pets. Facebook regularly deletes profiles it deems are not "real", too.
At the end of the day, share what you are comfortable with. It's not like this is Google Mortgage we're talking about, or Google Driver's License. There is no one standing over anyone's shoulder screaming "YOU WILL USE GOOGLE AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!" Google sells information about you...everybody sells information about you...but they can only sell the information you give them. Buy a car, your info is sold. Go to college, your info is sold. Buy a house, your info is sold. Apply for a credit card, your info is sold. Look at your junk mail after any of these activities if you need verification of that. Hell, I started receiving a bunch of new junk mail for third party car warranties and auto repair coupons after I registered my car last time with the DMV, so even government agencies are monetizing your personal info now. That is far more troubling to me because it's not like I can opt out of the DMV if I want to legally drive in this state.
You want an anonymous social network? Go ahead and start one up...good luck paying for it. Everyone has a choice here....we need to remember that.
Absolutely...and we need to lose this ridiculous naivety when it comes to kids already. We all either used ourselves or heard in regular usage every one of these words by the time we hit middle school. We survived. It's amazing, really.
So many people grow up and just forget all those years or something, I don't know. I mean, hell, we used to talk dirty, do drugs and have sex at school, let alone in general. It's part of growing up. Short of locking your kids in a room until they turn 18 and home schooling them, they are going to be exposed to this stuff no matter how much you try to keep it from them. Better to let them learn from the experience just like we all did.
It's funny, ask most anyone what they think of leet-speak and the shortcuts the younger generation takes in communication, especially someone in the education field, and they will generally think it's the most horrible thing ever to happen to the English language....then, they turn around and put word filters up which, as we all know, are what drives the creation of the leet-speak in the first place.
Maybe we should just accept that kids talk about inappropriate things with each other and encourage proper spelling and grammar? Or would that require accessing too many painful memories of our own childhoods when we did exactly the same shit and had exactly the same conversations kids today do? "OH MY GOD KIDS TALKING ABOUT SEX USING SLANG?!?!!?! HOW WILL WE DEAL WITH THIS NEW PHENOMENON??!!?!!?!!?!!?"
Oh, I don't know about that. I've certainly seen the phrase "I'll never buy a Sony product again!" often enough on comment threads and web sites other than Slashdot, but we'll just have to wait and see. The point is, expecting a company like Sony to fold with the same speed a Mom and Pop restaurant does after they infect a bunch of their patrons with Salmonella is silly. 99% of the time it doesn't happen like that, and when it does, that's why it's front page news everywhere.
Even if only a quarter of the people act on those sentiments and actually boycott Sony, that's a lot of potential profits flushed down the drain, and Sony wasn't exactly driving the market before. Their stock is down 42% what it was a year ago, which has to hurt pretty damn bad.

Any good sites for finding movies now?
Yes...google "[name of movie or show] torrent" and pick one.

Replace MOBO is not a solution? Oh Noes $50 dollars!
\ What piece of shit motherboards are you buying? My last ASUS mobo was like $289 from Newegg....
You must not live in the U.S..
