I'd almost bet it's the latter (traffic having become substantially worse). I say this as someone that lived in Seattle 15+ years ago. I adjusted my driving style to compensate for the fact that it was just going to take between 30 minutes to an hour to get *anywhere*. Everyone just seemed to putt along in no particular hurry to get anywhere. Once I adjusted, it was actually fairly relaxing.
Not sure if it's the remaining fallout from the Californicator invasion or what, but last time I drove in Seattle it was like a completely different place. People actively hanging out their windows yelling at people, driving like assholes. I was really surprised. I'm pretty sure if I moved back there I'd become a mass transit user.
Blocking traffic is also aggressive. Having said that, I understand your sentiment and emotions. I've been working really hard on yielding to people in what I call "the asshole lane". It's that lane on the right hand side that goes away on the other side of the intersection. Favorite place for people to try to race ahead of traffic and force their way in at the last minute. Being only partially successful at tempering my ego, I tend toward using the leftmost lane when possible just to avoid the whole scenario.
You might want to run your statement by a traffic cop. I'm sure they could clarify the issue for you.
Or you could just check your local traffic statues online. Perhaps you live in a state that doesn't have that one on the books. There are probably some out there somewhere.
Another problem is that obstructing traffic is also illegal in many states. Regardless of your speed vs the posted speed limit. Unfortunately, it's rarely enforced.
My opinion is that your particular anecdotal isn't likely to induce much of a road rage in most drivers. The active blockers tend to be the ones pissing people off. However, not only do I get out of other drivers way as quickly as possible as a courtesy to them (I personally speed up to do so), I also do it as a form of self preservation; particularly in regard to someone that's obviously hell bent on getting somewhere. The sooner someone driving erratically is away from my vehicle, the happier I am.
Yeah. My bad. Mostly was just responding to the condescending jerk above. "Hate to break it to you" is right up there with "Sorry to burst your bubble" in my list of peeves.
Hate to break it to you buddy, but Verizon doesn't have a network that's compatible with 3G phones. Until Verizon modernizes their network, GSM phones aren't an option no matter who the provider of the phone is or what their restrictions are.
Its like allowing thousands of thieves in your house, on the assumption that they are not going to rob you?? BRAVO, fanbois!! Even if I ignore the fact that you jumped from hundreds to thousands, I'd still disagree with your analogy. It's more like allowing hundreds of sticks of dynamite in your house under the assumption that you aren't going to accidentally ignite one of them.
IIRC, Jobs went to Verizon. Unfortunately, Verizon consists of control freaks that want to artificially limit the feature set of the phones provided to them so they can nickle & dime their customers to death. A fine example of that thinking was the Moto bluetooth fiasco (which ended in a class action lawsuit against Verizon).
And, Apple needed the service provider to modify their network in order for visual voicemail to work, which costs the provider money.
And, Apple wanted an unlimited data plan on the base service plan.
Apple made demands. Apparently, AT&T pushed back.
I find it interesting that a fair number of people are screaming & yelling about Apple intentionally limiting their customer base. That seems to speak to the desirability of the iPhone more than anything. Otherwise, no one would care.
Where can I buy a PC that is as small and quiet as a Mac Mini or Apple TV?... For now, I will stick to my Ubuntu running AppleTV. It has digital audio and video out, and casts [sic] $250. But if you have a suggestion, go ahead.
Okay, I'll bite. 17" silent-ish HP laptop : Eur 1000
Wow. I guess the dollar has gotten suddenly stronger. 'Cause it appears that 1000 Euro is equivalent to 250 USD.
Well, the problem for me is that I still get kdawson posts in my slashboxes. Apparently the filtering system isn't applied to them... just the main page.
So how did the h's get back into the language again in English? Homo remains pronounced with the h in the UK. If the 'h' was dropped early on, it must have re-appeared in England, then?
So, what you're saying is that after the Roman homos went underground they resurfaced in England?
You have got to be kidding. I'm trying to think of a Mac that I've had that actually slept reliably. My first Mac was a Beige G3. Since then, I've had a BB iMac, DVD burning G4 (the first of the movie burning Macs), lampshade iMac, Mac Mini (G4), lampshade iMac, and the Core 2 Duo MBP. The MPB has been the worst of the bunch, but every one of them has had issues with coming out of sleep correctly. Doesn't happen all the time, but when it doesn't come back from sleep correctly, it sucks. Yes, I've modified the sleep defaults to shut off hot sleep (it swaps out to hard drive now). Didn't fix it. It got better, but it still occasionally doesn't wake up. So I don't ever sleep it anymore.
Yes - I realize it's anecdotal for me - perhaps a bad run of luck - but go check google. You'll find I'm not even remotely alone in this.
Well, I'm going to go ahead and assume you're the the original AC (no way to really know). You're taking your own personal experience (which, by definition, is limited - just like the rest of us), and then making sweeping generalizations. And, in fact, making derogatory sweeping generalizations. It's no wonder you're getting crap about it.
And, if you don't think what you wrote was derogatory, let me give you a sample: "The majority of people who post as AC do so because of their insecurity in their own opinions. Also, their content is small enough that it would take more time to log in or create an account than it would to post."
Then I just follow this up by stating that's a generalization born out by my experience. Of course, in this case I don't buy into my argument (I typically post as AC when I'm posting something that goes against the lockstep, group-think so prevalent here. I have no idea why others do).
Anyway - I have an HDD iPod and a flash iPod (well, okay - I also have an iPhone, but I meant the Shuffle when I said flash iPod). The primary reason I have an iPod is because of iTunes. Because it's a slick, simple, integrated solution. If iTunes supported other players I'd likely use them. Although I've had good luck with my iPods (my first was back when they were Mac only). Most of the people that I know with iPods tend toward being either a) Mac users that don't want to have to know the guts of something to use it or b) engineers - and if you think engineers are looking for fashion statement, then I'd suspect you don't know many engineers.
Maybe you're just trying to be funny. Or maybe you really didn't understand the post.
The parent was responding to someone who made the completely baseless claim that life is known to spring up all over the universe. Apparently in large part because the conditions necessary for it to spring up are present all over the universe.
Now - instead of being all smarmy... point me to a reference that shows that we've discovered life anywhere outside of our solar system.
Then, for good measure, explain what these conditions are that are conducive to life... and I only ask that because, when it comes down to it, we don't actually really know. We have guesses, but that's it.
So, basically - your analogy sucked. It's the rough equivalent of saying "I know for a fact that my car keys exist on planets throughout the universe, because I also know for a fact that the conditions for my car keys to exist are present in a lot of places. Even though I, in fact, only have this one set of car keys."
I suspect that's not what you really intended. But it's what came across to anyone who had followed the thread. Or at least I would hope that would be apparent to anyone reading the thread.
Being an Apple zealot is easy. Parsing your failed attempt at writing is what's tough.
Seriously - I'm still scratching my head wondering what you really meant to type when you wrote "... the market bit them in the ass after they used to for the own ends for so long."

Okay. Fair enough. I apologize for calling you a condescending jerk.
I think the AC was referring to the encapsulation of polymorphic attributes when referencing latent metadata.
Good luck finding that out. I read this thread repeatedly and I can't for the life of me figure out what she's after.
Yeah. My bad. Mostly was just responding to the condescending jerk above. "Hate to break it to you" is right up there with "Sorry to burst your bubble" in my list of peeves.
You might want to check the parent...
For a low number slashdotter, you really suck at math. Or else you don't know what "several" means.

For you Tiger users, part of this update also includes security updates for Tiger. See the tech note for details.
Of interest to me was the Adobe Flash fix. That was overdue.

I think the upshot of a a number of threads here is that you shouldn't put any stock in it.

get a clue you idiotic chimp! Spoken like a true AC. Bravo! Your compelling argument has us all convinced.
