But they won't, they have the money to defend themselves, and they're a pretty smart bunch.

    Two different business models.

RedHat: we give you the software, you pay yearly subscriptions if you want the easy Windows-Update-like RHN.

The fact that RedHat had demo accounts in the first place is to their credit. It's really hard to feel bad about the fact that it's a hassle to abuse the demo account concept (by signing up for an account for each machine). And also, you don't need RHN to get updates anyway - you can always download them from their errata page.

I've never owned a Mac or anything made by Apple before the Ipod, so I can't say that I have some sort of bias towards Apple products. Personally, to me the appearance of player (white and nice shiny metal), plus the interface (the wheel and buttons), the gorgeous LCD and its backlight, is important. The UI is great as well - it is simple yet very functional. It's the WHOLE package, not any one feature that makes the Ipod so perfect. Nobody but Apple has managed to get everything right (in my book).

If the other players (such as iRiver) has additional features that the Ipod doesn't have, I don't neet them (i.e. I don't need to record, a digital output for MP3s is a bit overkill).

With so many file systems in existence today (not even including the ones on portal devices like MP3 players) to expect that the metadata (XML or otherwise) would get transferred from one machine to another is rather naive. Not only that, but this type of transfer of metadata would have to be implemented in email clients, etc as well.

The editorial in the New York time is a page (or two) clearly marked as such. As I am usually looking for news (not for some opinion piece) I skip that section. Journalists are supposed to leave their bias in the closet and write a "fair and balanced" piece explaining, without emotion or name calling, both sides of the argument. I understand that this is not always the case, based on the quality of a newspaper or magazine (and their editors).

Unless you're trying to tell me that the entire Forbes magazine is one big editorial (which I guess it's possible) this does not apply here. This "article" is not marked as being someone's opinion but as being a report on a specific issue. That report was not even close to "fair and balanced".

To my knowledge slashdot has never claimed to be unbiased in its selection of articles, or the commentary that goes with it, nor is it expected to.

Maybe I am a bit naive, but the print media (newspaper, news magazines) and associated websites do have a (moral, not legal) obligation to write fair(er) and (more) balanced coverage on issues. Forbes' article was far from that mark.
