    VC 6 has tons of template problems. VC7.1 is much more standards compliant. Only reason to upgrade, since the VC6 environment is much better IMO.

    The real problems is that there is no competition in the Cable TV market. Cable companies are granted monopolies by the municipal government, and then they thumb their noses at the governments *cough*Adelphia in L.A.*cough*

    Get rid of the cable monopolies! I'm relatively happy with TW cable, but if they had competition, I suspect it would be much better.

    Note that I'm specifically referring to cable (yeah, I could get dish if I wanted).

    I would say that Apache vs. IIS provides an interesting analogy.

    Apache has a much larger base than IIS, yet most of the exploits are for IIS.

    Last place I worked had free coffee (not espresso), and while the cokes weren't free, they were subsidized (the coke machine was 25 cents a can -- cheaper than bringing it from home).

    That was definitely a plus.

    A shower room for employees. Some people bike to work, some walk or jog over lunch, etc... you want a shower for those types.

    You misunderstand me. If the make non-admin the default, then Broderbund will FINALLY *have* to fix their apps. This particular rant of mine is not anti-MS, it's anti-Broderbund.

    The "It's about time" comment was re: abandoning the Registry for app settings.

    It will break a lot of Broderbund programs. And about time.

    The Sims, and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing require Admin. There is NO F*CKING REASON that either of these should require it, except for sloppy/lazy coding on Broderbund's part (I suspect that they either write to HKLM or to the program directory). Maybe that would cause them to be fixed.

    OT: I've read somewhere that MS is (finally!) discouraging putting all user settings into the Registry, but is recommending config files (human readability optonal) in C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data. Once again, it's about time.

    Let the characters have flaws, let them make mistakes. Put irony and humor into it in difficult situations. Make the leaders make difficult choices. Make it interesting again with good stories, not practically perfect people and a lot of references to Shakespeare.

    Deep Space 9. Look at some of their best moments, in particular "In the Pale Moonlight".

    Kernhigan didn't write the initial version of UNICS. You're thinking of Ken Thompson. Kernighan co-wrote C with Dennis Ritchie.

    Sounds like Litton. When they went to a electronic timecard, you had enter these nasty 10 digit job codes from a pull down list (with no typeahead), couldn't correct errors easily, etc...

    They spent something like 15 man years (10 people, 1.5 years) developing this piece of shit, too.

    Of course, NG bought Litton, so...
