That's great! The bad part is all the asses that yak on their phones while driving will now be surfing the web at the wheel!

This will be the next codec. The consumer will eat what he's given, but inventive and driven people will find a way past these "limitations".

  3. Most of you are missing the point. on OS X · · Score: 1

You guys are all GEEKS. The Macintosh isn't aimed at you. The main reason X is based on a *NIX is because Apple couldn't waste time coming up with it's own OS that had all the buzzwords. So stop saying Linux or BSD or anything is a better Unix or server OS. It's meant to be. As long as OS X is easy to use and install, it will NEVER be accepted by the geek community. You guys LOVE keeping the complicated stuff around so you can try to out-do one another with your set-ups. Just remember that 90% of computer users aren't as "31337" as you ego-maniacs.

There ARE games like this due out. One in particular is Halo. It will be a multi-player game where teams will be important. There is still shoot'em up goals, however.

  5. Just like something else... on Portable Linux Box · · Score: 1

Remember the Newton? For the technology available at the time, Apple's Newton was pretty much the same thing. It never flew, so I don't expect this thing to. Especially running Linux or Windows. I wish companies would stop trying to put Linux and Windows on handhelds, because both OSes suck on them.

  6. It'll be like DVD... on DataPlay - Flash Killer or Copy-Control Nightmare? · · Score: 1

Eventually, there will be a PC reader for these discs and someone will code something that will decrypt the filesystem and allow you to compress the music with a codec of your choice, which you can then distribute to others via Napster, GNUtella, LimeWire, or etc. It doesn't matter what "the industry" comes up with, if people want it bad enough, they'll find a way to get it.

Once again you have blown me away with your massive vocabulary. Are you some 13 year old who thinks they're an 31337 hax0r? It's "people" like you who ruin great discussions like this. Go ask your mommy for some money to buy a new game now.

  8. What about drivers? on OS X on x86? · · Score: 1

Everyone is forgetting about writing drivers for the thousands of PC peripherals. This is the challenge that Be faced and it was just too much to accomplish alone. Unless PC companies pledge full support for new PC hardware, Apple would never even consider putting their OS on an X86 machine. That's why Apple keeps their stuff proprietary: less overhead in lots of different hardware configs.

  9. PPC (Apple Hardware) Support - LinuxPPC vs BeOS on Ask LinuxPPC Co-Founder Jason Haas · · Score: 2

Apple all but killed future support for the BeOS on PPC hardware when it quit providing the technical specs on the new motherboard architectures, and etc. LinuxPPC overcame this with, in my opinion, far fewer resources than Be Inc. Maybe it's a testiment to each OS's user devotion, or OpenSource vs 'ClosedSource', I don't know. My question is, why do you think LinuxPPC was able to successfully continue supporting the newer hardware from Apple when Be couldn't? Also, do you think there may be the posibility of technology sharing between Be Inc. and LinuxPPC?

  10. AMD Dual Chipset due out sometime in 2001 on What Happened To SMP For AMD processors? · · Score: 1

I know this for a fact. A buddy of mine is down in Austin, TX doing a co-op with AMD. He actually does things with motherboard chipsets that AMD is working on. Anyway, when he went to Austin for the interview, he ate dinner with a couple of guys who had been doing co-ops with AMD. These guys where talking about RC5-DES performance on dual and quad Athlon motherboards. These guys where testing them in July. My buddy had also talked to a full-timer at AMD and asked when the SMP motherboards/chipsets would be ready for release. The guy said in about a year. They are having problems with chip caches when doing SMP. Or something to that effect, I'm not a hardware guy. Anyway, AMD has them and is testing them, working out the bugs. Another year yet (I hope).

  11. Is this really news? on Apple Advertises "1-Click" Licensing · · Score: 1

Come on guys, I saw this last week. It isn't news. Apple has had the same front on their homepage for a week. Some people just wait to bring it up to pair it with something else that has gone bad for Apple. How about finding other companies to rag on besides Microsoft and Apple.
