Who would have thought of such a thing but Steve Jobs. Even from the grave he is still amazing us. Provide stuff for free using advertising - I can't get over it.
That Hot coffee example is pure bunk. The 80 year old lady who was burned by the 180 degree coffee received burns that needed skin graphs. There was no need to ever have coffee in drinks that temperature and having McDonalds pay for the skin graphs doesn't seem like such a bad thing to me since it was their fault. I don't think I'd end up in the hospital if I spilled and fresh cup of Starbucks finest on me. Most cases that recieve high jury awards are decreased on appeal. That is not to say that there aren't friveless law suits.
I have to admit however that the thought of having DUBYA running healthcare does send a chill down my spine. Especially considering what he has done for the average Iraq's health.
It never ceases to amaze me that people always want to design some computer gizmo to replace all the things teachers are good at. A talented and motivated educator that can observe and adapt to childrens needs, observe their personal interest and use those interest to motivate them cannot be replaced by a computer. At least not at this point in the computers evolution. Here's a thought. Let's try and use the computer to do things that teachers don't do well. Suppose a program was written to monitor individual student performance on a more fine grained basis in real time, so that teachers could pin point critical skills the student is lagging in early. Waiting until the end of the year for some stupid standardized test that is taken after it is too late correct problems seems to me rather brain dead. But given the way society claims to value education but pays teachers I guess we get what we pay for.
Cuba switching to GNU/Linux Cuba is switching away from Windows to GNU/Linux. I have to say that I was a little surprised when I was last in Cuba and saw many of the PCs running Windows. Cuba's director of information technology, Roberto del Puerto, says that Cuba already has approximately 1500 computers running on Linux, and is working towards replacing Windows on all state owned computers. Link [slashdot.org] Which leads me to: http://linux.slashdot.org/ [slashdot.org] Tony Montana writes "According to several [yahoo.com] news [cio-today.com] sites [theinquirer.net] the government of Cuba is dumping Windows in favour of Linux. Cuba's director of information technology, Roberto del Puerto, says that Cuba already has approximately 1500 computers running on Linux, and is working towards replacing Windows on all state owned computers." And the only link out of those that's still up is http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=23300 [theinquirer.net], which contains only: ONE OF the last bastions of revolutionary socialism, Cuba is to switch all its computers over to Linux to counter the influence of the Evil Capitalistic American lackey Microsoft. According to the government daily, Juventud Rebelde, Roberto del Puerto, director of the state office of information technology, said his office was working on a legal framework that would allow the replacement of Windows through-out Cuba. Cuba already has 1,500 computers using Linux. Although what flavour is not clear.

So all this plagiarised summarisation bullshit leads me only to http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050517/tc_afp/cubaco mputersitlinux [yahoo.com] Sorry, the page you requested was not found. And before I know it, 15 minutes are gone and all I've learned is that 1500 computers have been switched. Thank you plagiarism. And the beatiful irony of it all is that I'm contributing to it with this post!
I'm an anti-copyright advocate who sees more power in releasing my information for free to the ether of the Internet. Not only do I not copyright my blog posts, e-books and music, I openly request others to copy it and even put their own name on it. I've realized that once I put something into easily copied form, it will be copied. It might be partially used, fully mimiced, or completely turned upside down, yet I've also found that the more I am copied, the more people tend to find out that I am the original author.
For me as a writer, I love to know that people are reading me and replying to me -- that is my "profit" in the short term -- reader input. I tend to make up my own words that I write with, in order to see who might be copying me fully. I then look at what people say about their "writings", too. One such word I created was unanimocracy, but I've invented a few other phrases that are easily searched, too.
I believe the best way to "fix" plagiarism isn't to make it more illegal or immoral, but to work on a free market and open system where content creators can submit their creations to be cataloged as "the first." Let others copy it, but Google or another toolbar can easily flag a new creation as "very similar to another." Imagine if the Google toolbar had a "% of originality" for every site you visit (or every paragraph to highlight with your mouse). This could work for lyrics, guitar tabs, writings, opinion, news articles, etc.
Plagiarism is "OK" is some circles -- do a Google News search and see how many big named media outlets just regurgitate each others' news. Boring. Bloggers do the same thing, but many put a unique spin on the original writer's ideas.
I love when people plagiarize me. In the long run it builds my credibility even if they don't reference me as the original writer. I'd rather find free market solutions (such as the one I outlined above) rather than find penalties for the copying. If someone discovers that the person they respect didn't write the content on their own, the market fixes this by making the reader not read the plagiariser anymore. Easy solution.
In the long run, trying to protect your creative works will be a losing process. I use my previous creations to gain new customers who appreciate the information that I don't share. That is the product/service I sell, and I use my years of writing to show a history of original opinion and beliefs. Anything I write for public consumption is merely a marketing tool to get people to hire me for real face-time -- I could care less if someone else found a better way to make money with my thoughts. Most of my thoughts are based on a lifetime of reading and thinking about what others say.
My blog network forum is based completely on the comments of others -- I even pay my readers who give me the best comments. Their input on my writings is what gives me MORE information to sell at a higher price to those willing to pay for my knowledge. Why should I stop others from using my works to create new opinions that I can learn from? --
Some people have said that I play too many violent video games. It makes me so mad that I want to whip out an uzi and shoot them but I DON'T. Instead I go down town roll a couple of bums or scare whores by pretending that I'm going to run over them with my car. Then I usually feel much better so I can home and my mom makes me dinner. But then she keeps naggin me about getting a job and I feel like getting a carrot pealer and stabbing her in the eye but I DON'T because I go to my bedroom, lock myself in, find my game controller which is usually in the semi-clean pile of underwear on the bed, not the 3 day old at the foot of the bed. I play GTA until 3 or 4 AM, jackoff and go to sleep. My friends do pretty much the same thing and aren't anymore violent than I am. F-- you guys.
Beat them up for Giving for blocking Info for the Chinese but request information when no crime has been committed and that is ok. couldn't they at least time these things so they are far enough appart so that they do appear so stupid?
The largest downside to MS is that they have to support all the really good hardware out there as well as the really really really crappy stuff. This inhibits their options as far as making sucurity changes patches and all the rest. The only reason they survive is companies like Dell and HP put in the effort to make sure that their software runs well on their hardware. Apple is not trying to support the universe of hardware avaialble, just their own. This allows a more intergrated solution which could potentially have less problems for the user since they have the options to solve problems in either the hardware or software.
Apple is highly unlikely to give up what it considers its only competetive advantage.
Dovorak is a dummy and never listen to a psycologist about anything, especiall the computer industry.
I agree we need to look more closely at who is funding this Congressman. He is from TX , could it be oil interest? He is not bothering to look at who funds the science being done that doesn't support climate change. I wonder why? Although it is possible there are people with monetary incentives in support of climate change the glaringly obvious incentive is to continue making money selling oil as opposed to developing alternative fuels. Which do you really think is more probably?
Raskin has complained about Apple ever since they poo poo'd his DynaBook ideas back in the early 80's. If the Mac really had as many people creating it that seem to get credit for designing it then it truly would look like a government project. Let's give some real credit to Bill Atkinson, Andy Hertzfeld just to name two.
I worked with researchers for several years doing testing and research at Langley Research Center Hampton VA. Believe it or not it takes more than one fiber or even just the idea of carbon fibers to make a space craft. A lot of testing of fiber combinations, weaves, temperatures and epoxies went in to the development of COMPOSITES. People didn't know exactly what those combinations would be until they tried them. This is what we in the busines call ENGINEERING. Can you say ENGINEERING. I thought you could. Much of this was paid for or done by NASA before the cost came down and the materials could be used in consumer products.
Similary transisters we use were developed by funds for from THE GOVERNMENT for BASIC RESEARCH long before there were practicle APPLICATIONS for them.
Knowing a bunch of names and factoids doesn't mean you have a complete picture. The fact is the US invests in most of these things with DARPA in an nevering ending effort to find better and more cost effective was to kill people. In fact the first people to go into space were just ballistic payload replacements. Secondly the GOVERNMENT found that computers were good at breaking codes of your enemies making it easier to kill them. This encouraged them to make better computers and thus smaller transisters.
I would like to point out that much of the original work with composite structures was done at NASA. SpaceShipOne benefits greatly from the original 10's if not 100's of millions of dollars NASA has done with composites. If we counted all that research money in the cost of SpaceShipOne significantly increases. This is not to take away from the accomplishment but let's not always try an think in terms of money for everything we do:)
When will people get over this idea that there is or even should be a language of the masses. The masses just want there shit to play music, watch their video or view porn. They do not want to have to program the machine to do it.

Should we consider the death penalty for people who commit murder in a game. Come on you're waisting semi valuable band width with this question.

I never received my money from the settlement eventhough I sent in the documentation they asked for. Seems to me that they have never complied.

Cisco took away a market 3COM basically help create. Tens years after the fact 3COM decides it must compete with Cisco. What a revelation.
