  3. Re:Just as well on Hubble Future Is Cloudier After Katrina · · Score: 2, Interesting

There's really not much difference between Discretionary and Entitlement spending. The only reason that Entitlement spending is "not discretionary" is because congress passed a law to make it so.

Congress DOES have direct control over entitlements. Congress can easily pass laws to make Entitlement spending NOT spending. They just don't want to... they'll lose votes (Republicans and Democrats both).

Using figures from 2000: The truth is, over 70% of our budget goes to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. If you include the ~11% interest on the budget, and you assume that we need no national defense (for the sake of argument), that leaves us able to discuss 19% of the budget.

Why do you formulate an argument based on 19% of the budget?
If we cut 25% of the funding for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, we would have DOUBLE the current "discretionary" spending (.25*(100-19)=20.25% which is roughly 19%)... and that's assuming no national defense.
If national defense cost 10% of our income, we'd have 350% of the discretionary income we currently have. Our "discretionary" income would be (19%-10%)=9%, so a 25% reduction in the funding for medicare would give us (.25*(100-9)=22.75% free budget), (22.75%/9%)=252% MORE discretionary income than we currently have.

I think you need to realize that Entitlements aren't entitlements because they're fundamental to the creation of this country. They're entitlements because some politician, one day, thought it would be a good idea to get them re-elected, and then went out and told everyone about how NOBODY deserves to be disadvantaged. Then they enacted laws that take other people's money so they could get re-elected. We could just as easily pass laws to take them away.

On top of all of it, the government is historically TERRIBLE dealing with entitlements. Don't believe me? Look at Katrina. We're spending TWO BILLION dollars PER DAY on Katrina victims. That's 4 times what the Red Cross has collected to date, and with the whole FEMA debacle, I'm willing to bet the Red Cross has probably helped more than the Federal Government. The total cost of the debit card program? ~650 million...

Most of that debit card money will probably be misspent. If you give poor people money (most of the displaced people from New Orleans are poor) (poor people have shown themselves to lack money management skills--by definition), they squander the money you give them. Lack of money management is why so many lottery winners end up losing their money. Every charity knows that when you provide for people in need, you give them what they NEED, NOT money. Because people without money management skills almost always buy things they want, rather than things they need.

Believing that people deserve entitlements is a fundamental problem in the thought process of many people in this country. The government is taking my money and spending 2 billion a day for hurrican relief, and people are complaining that the lines are too long, that they need people to watch their kids so they can get out of the Astrodome, etc. People BELIEVE they're entitled to all of this money because our politicans have told them (and passed laws) that the government should bail everyone out of all bad circumstances.

And you just bought into it too.

Sony could digitally sign certain homebrew applications and verify that they're legit for a fee from the developers.

Or better yet, Sony could manage a user-based voting system where applications not supporting piracy would be approved by voting consensus, and those allowing piracy would be denied. Entry into this voting forum would be fee based for voting users ($10 admission?), to pay for Sony's moderation expenses. Users found improperly voting on a repeated (intentional) basis for software products known to be piracy would be banned. In addition, the forum could be web-based and provide advertisement revenue.

All homebrew applications that come out would be required by Sony to also install the latest firmware version, thereby discouraging piracy even further. This would also decrease demand for attempting to find exploits in the PSP to circumvent piracy protections by those people wanting to simply run legit homebrew applications.

I don't see why it couldn't work--if Sony wanted it to... but I doubt they care.

I've used palm for over 6 years, and I've been very happy. At first, I used a palm IIIc, and I just upgraded to a treo 650. They are great devices, very fast, and it does everything I need. Sure, it doesn't play 3D games, but there are a host of products out there, both games and productivity based... and contrary to what the article says, the palm is very stable.

Although they don't have OS level memory protection, I had my palm IIIc (excepting one program) crash twice in four years, and once I got my treo setup, it crashes very rarely (once a month, at most). I've NEVER had the palm crash in Palm's own applications. If a program has a serious flaw, it WILL restart the palm.

Honestly, the OS restarting on an application crash isn't that big of a deal, anyway. All programs save their state when you switch out of them, so even after a reboot, you don't lose your work in the programs. And the reboot takes only about 10 seconds--so it's really not bad at all... when it happens.

And, the palm can play videos... very well. With TCMCP , you can even play PC-sized divx encoded video on the palm. The Treo 650's 312 MHZ Xscale is FAST.

The palm does have downsides... The sync software is terrible (mentioned in the article), their customer service SUCKS, and devices previous to the Treo 650 are NOT flash based--you lose your battery and backup battery, and you lose your information. They needed to upgrade to flash memory a LONG time ago.

Basically, a palm is like a Mac with a good application base. It's intuitive, stylish, and it "just works". It doesn't always have bleeding edge stuff, but it does everything it's designed for, and there are programs to do almost anything you need. Every PocketPC I used crashed repeatedly and had severe stability issues.

If I was older, it would "cost" society less. That's drastically different than society having to pay 1 million pounds to take care of my death.

Keep in mind, the traffic death/cost statistics are generally made by people who want stricter traffic laws. Liars figure and figures lie.

P.S: Think about the conclusion of statistics in that way. People who are retired (and don't/will never own a business or work occasionally at a paying job), are worth $0 to society.

Apply it to abortion. If aborted babies are costing the US $2.2 million each, then at 45 million abortions , that's $99 TRILLION dollars cost since 1973. At a GDP of 11.75 trillion dollars (2004) per year, that means abortion is costing the US fully 26% of the national income to pay for abortions and the resulting cleanup (assuming the GDP has stayed the same from 1973-2004).
