Bring an EMPTY water bottle and fill it with water after you get through the check points. Generally works fine if you put it in your carry on luggage. Some people have reported problems with some guards however ...

You could also probably buy Vodka at the bar past security and fill it with that as well. :-)

From one article which was poorly written I think the plan was this:

    1) From broken email account send to known email connections a note asking to visit cool shopping site
    2) Victim goes to site and keylogger is installed
    3) Sniff userid/password
    4) Go to step 1

Not much actual phishing here but the article was poorly written and there were hints that they did not really know what was going on, they were just looking at list of broken accounts.

I can also see some cases where you might want to provide copyright protection for ten years or so after the death of the author if the work is less than five years after the date of publication. Or similar numbers.

This would prevent publishers from having to take out life insurance on the author and would "allow" the publication of works that are published after death. "John Doe's Cancer Journal", "Diary of Anne Frank", perhaps even "Bob's Translation of the Magna Carta"

That said, current law is way too long.

  5. Re:Coyright infringement on Amazon Delaying Public Domain Submissions On Kindle · · Score: 1

The only real problems I have with the changes are:

    > You only find out about the change after you submit. The how-tos for publishing do not tell you of the change. They do not warn you when you sign up. You do not find out about the public domain issues until you start to search in Google for the message. The email the article submitter got is not sent to everyone.
    > They tell you to check back in 5 days. That does not mean in 5 days it will be reviewed.
    > Larger companies may not be held to the same standards.
    > They also sit on stuff for a while when being updated.
    > Even if you have the only copy available they can sit on it forever

I would rather they filtered the submissions for pirated stuff, removed/downgraded stuff in the store which was returned, and perhaps even charging a review fee for submission (something small like 5 dollars)

Improvements to the store search tools could be a huge help as well.

Long term, I do not see how they can avoid removing some items from the catalog. This does not mean they should remove them from the Kindles. Just do not offer version 37 of Pride and Prejudice any longer.

Lots of stuff is not available on Gutenburg. Also converting the work PROPERLY is work that traditionally costs quite a bit of time.

One of the main problems is that the quality of some of the PD work conversion process is very poor. They may have skipped a few pages here and there in the scaning. not spell checked it. scanned a page twice, not formatted with paragraphs correctly ....

Almost anything that is uploaded to the Kindle store that was based on a public domain work is no longer entirely public domain.

The amount of work you need to do to convert the source work properly to the Kindle is not trivial. Yes people can OCR direct to a file and upload that but the quality is not much better than a google translation in many cases.

Go to a mainstream bookstore and pick up a copy of one of Mark Twain's books and look at the copyright notice.

I have never lived in one of those states. Do they actually test you for color vision when you apply?

This is one reason I will never live in West Virgina.

Has anyone here been refused a license due to color vision?

For those outside the US: In order to drive anywhere in the US you need to get a license from the state you live in. Each state has its own vision rules. I can get a license in Arizona where they do not test color vision and drive in West Virginia, but if I moved there I might not be able to drive untill I moved away.

my copy did not go away. One of two things probably lead to it staying. My kindle was off when they sent me the email about the issue. the other possibility is that I stored the book on the compact flash card. I do not feel guilty about continuing to read it. I own a paper copy of the book I am reading. The apology says they will do something different next time, but does not say what they will do. I would guess that the intent is to go the extra mile to obtain the rights instead of just yanking the copies like they did in this time. But courts will require it in the future.

Then I thought about it some more and I began to be angered at the idea of 1K+ patents. That is just unreal.

Just think of the cost to research for prior art on that many patents if you were to do a good faith effort. No large corp spends the money/time to do a real search!

Either they are doing this as a reward to employees (some companies give bonus for patents) or they are building a war chest for patent/legal wars, or they are trying to control the market.

None of the above fits with the intent of the patent system. Perhaps, big companies should be fined if they file patents covered by prior art.
