  1. content on Generating Revenue with On-Line Ads? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think it mostly comes down to the content of the site when using Google's Adsense. As you know, they automatically pick the ads for your site based upon the content of it. If your site is about knitting, then it displays ads for knitting. Which also means that you probably won't get paid much for a clickthrough.

However, if your site is about Luxury cars or expensive network equipment, you will most likely much more money per clickthrough. As I mentioned in another post, I get $1 to $7 per clickthrough, however, I'm lucky if I get one or two clickthroughs per day. The demand just isn't that high for stuff like that. Now if I was running pr0n banners on a site that served pr0n, I'd probably get a ton more clickthroughs, but probably a fraction of a cent for each one.

  2. google on Generating Revenue with On-Line Ads? · · Score: 3, Informative

I use Google Adsense on my site.

I tried a couple of others in the past with some other sites and made a big fat zero. But google is actually decent. I get one or two clickthroughs a day, and depending on the ad, I get anywhere from $1 to $7 PER clickthrough. I know this seems a bit high, but given the content, the advertisers stand to make a lot of money off a sale.

In any case, it comes close to paying my hosting costs each month, but not enough to actually buy me a new server or turn a profit of any kind.

I got sick of supporting my friend's dad's computer. No matter what I did to it, he still managed to fill it with viruses and spyware. It was insanity. I had things set to autoupdate signatures and automatically run, but to no avail.

So last week he said he wanted a new computer, gave me his credit card number, told me what apps he needed, and let me order him one. I got him a shiny new Apple. No more friggin' spyware and virus hell, no more support calls for when his browser keeps crashing, and the security on it is miles higher than what he had with WinME. Plus, if he needs support, he can just go down to the local Apple Genius Bar.

I'm sure plenty of malware for the Apple will come, it's just a matter of time. But for now, I don't have to deal with it, and the Apple actually suits his business much better than his old windows box did.

  8. don't need to be a CLEC on Becoming a CLEC? · · Score: 5, Informative

I don't believe you need to be a CLEC. My friend's ISP offers DSL service. There are two parts to the DSL service, the line itself (provided by the LEC), and the internet connectivity for it (provided by the LEC or a 3rd party).

Qwest provides the lines in this area, and by law, when you sign up for one, they have to tell you all of the 3rd parties that offer internet service over it. Any ISP that wants to provide internet connectivity for Qwest lines simply pays for a Qwest WAN circuit to their ISP (T-1 or larger). The CPE's have an ATM PVC which terminates at the particular ISP they signed up to be with. I think Qwest calls this a Megapop or Megacentral line.

In any case, it's not expensive. One can support about 200 DSL customers off a single T-1 because not everyone is using it at the same time. This sounds like a lot, but I've seen it done and the line is very rarely saturated.

So, unless you want to actually provide the physical line too, there's no reason to become a CLEC.

No probs yet. I suspect that the turbo probs people are having when modding their S4's stems from them continuing to use the restrictive stock exhaust. With that much backpressure, the turbos get insanely hot. They will start to fail at 1050C. Of the people I know that replaced their downpipes and exhaust, they've had no problems.

  10. Re:Makes you wonder on Canon Digital Rebel Hacked Into A Pseudo-10D · · Score: 4, Interesting

Name one example of this. Everything I've seen that you state is in addition to several other modifications. For example, the engine in the Gen 1 and 2 DSM's (Eclipse, Talon, and Laser) may have lower boost as compared to the Euro model of that engine, but it also has smaller intake and exhaust manifolds, a smaller turbo, different fueling, etc.

The Audi S4 and RS4 have the same engine, but the turbos differ, as do the heads, exhaust and intake manifolds, the entire intake tract, intercoolers, etc. Everything appears to be the same, but it's not apparent until you start taking things apart.

We get screwed here in the US. Most foreign car manufacturers detune the cars for the US market due to emissions regulations, insurance reasons, or whatever. But that detuning rarely involves simply changing software or boost levels for turbos/superchargers. Usually, major components of the engine are "downgraded" also because they don't need to spend the extra money to support the same amount of air or fuel flow as they do on the european counterpart.
