Yes.. But what I'm trying to say is that just because pi is infinitely long doesn't mean it has every possible combination of digits. I didn't say anything about compression.

Just because it is infintely long doesn't mean any possible combinations of digits is in there... Maybe there's some proof that that's the case for pi, but if you have 0.1101001000100001...etc., you aren't going to find 238437466445 in it. Even if you converted from binary you'd never find the DeCSS source in there.. you'd have to invent your own number/letter conversion format and that would defeat the whole purpose.

  6. HTML vs. VRML on A New Chance For 3D On The Web? · · Score: 1

The other problem is that there aren't any good reasons for 3D on the web other than being a cool gimmick to play with. A 3D display of information would obscure pieces of it and require rotation or moving around in some sort of arbitrary fashion to find it. For almost all forms of information, a 2D chart or table will be clearer. In instances when you want to display, say a 3D model or graph and allow the user to rotate it, there are Java applets and such that work pretty well and don't require the installation of plugins.. If more detail is needed than a Java applet can provide, you can make a file available to download so that the viewer can view it in the 3D program of his choice. Mainstream VRML only means that we'll be waiting longer when we get to some page made by some dumbass web designer that thought 3D would make the site better. It won't.

You're probably right. I was going from what I heard in an AI course a year or so back, and it could be that there were many pictures taken, but the pictures were taken in batches, with the tank pictures taken in different light/exposure conditions than the pictures without tanks.

  8. Neural Nets and Voice Recognition on Online 'Sand Mouse' Tests Neurobiologists · · Score: 3

We've seen things like this before. One of the major problem with neural nets is their tendancy to specialize.. Building a system to recognize one word doesn't remotely compare to a system that can tell one from fun and done while also having the capacity to tell Bob from Rob from Cobb. The experiments posted on the site only show that the system can differentiate between 1 and the other numbers 2-9 and from various nonverbal tones. A neural net will very likely lock on to the specific differences between the sounds of these numbers. Example: A while back someone was creating a neural net to identify tanks on the ground in satellite photos. Two samples were used and the net learned to successfully differentiate them. When other samples were tried, however, the system was completely wrong. Eventually it was determined that the photo with tanks was brighter than the photo without, and that was what the system used to differentiate the photos.

You're right, you can't blame the internet as much as you can blame a highway for car accidents. But Napster is knowingly providing a facility for people to blatantly break the law. Other sites on the internet distribute warez, child porn, mp3s, what have you, and you know what happens to them... they get shut down. Napster may use a distibuted protocol, but it is still one, single, controlled service, and is as liable as an ISP is if the knowingly let people serve warez off their service. Come on guys, if you want stolen music, find something that can't be taken down by a lawsuit. Napster was a bad idea to start with, so give it up.

They switch IPs around every once in a while, and you will get caught, especially when people start getting messages like: Could not activate ethernet interface because the device at 65:4C:12:FF:4E:A1 is using the IP address .
