  1. Where it all ends up without the right fix on Japan's War On E-Waste · · Score: 5, Interesting

Unfortunately what they don't tell you is that about 80% of the collected e-waste is shipped to third world countries. See export harm at:
    http://www.svtc.org/cleancc/pubs/technotrash. htm
Dell uses prison labor to do their recycling. Recycling is usually pulling some parts which have little value and sending the rest overseas and to landfills.
However, there are systems such as plasma torch processes at ~8000 degrees C that are non-polluting
(everything is closed cycle) which can recover all the raw chemicals. Japan has these plants for household waste. Unfortunately no venture capitalist in the U.S. will back one (~10M) since they only have good profit returns rather than 10X returns in 2 years. I know, I wrote a business plan for one and found out disinterested they are in plants with just 'good' profit returns. My own university 'venture office' laughed and said come back when I had a biotech or computer idea.

  2. Free? on Niue Gets Island-Wide WiFi · · Score: 1

Somebody has to be paying. The reality is that it is cost re-distribution. The gov. of the island is redirecting revenue from the sale of the TLD "nu" to pay for it. Free sounds nice until you figure out that someone is really snaking money out the islnader's wallets on the sly. If you park your boat offshore and soak up the bandwidth you have transferred the cost to the island's gov. and indirectly to each citizen of the island.

  3. How to keep them on What's The Best Way To Retain Trained Employees? · · Score: 1

It easy to keep retrained employees, just wait until they are over 40 and you can retrain them all you want and they won't leave. They won't leave because they can't since no one else will hire them. Age discrimination works wonders for job retention.

  6. "ANY" key patent on Stupid Patent Contest Winners · · Score: 1

I hereby forthwit, and halfwit patent the "any" key. I shall be duly entitled to humm... lets say one cent each time the instructions are issued and carried out to "hit any key to continue". This covers 'any' and all situations calling for touching, caressing, or otherwise digitally manipulating 'any' key. And it doesn't make any difference if you say it or write it, I claim it all, if it has anything to do with 'any' key. So there! If you touch 'any' key my lawyers will calling you right after they finish beating up a defenseless old women.

  7. Age discrimination is real, Forbes Article on Is There REALLY an IT Worker Shortage in the US? · · Score: 1

Check out this article in Forbes:
    http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2000/1016/6611036a. html
It's humorous but right on the mark.
I have proved age discrimation to my co-workers by building two made-up resumes, one with dates so that age can be determined and one with no age clues and different names. The one with age clues never gets a response, the 'ageless' resume has at least a 50% hit response rate. Don't believe me, try it yourself.

  8. Double talk on Publishing On Internet Patented · · Score: 1

"allows all production to take place on the Internet. The system allows authoring and editing within the GPS environment or through word-processing programs like Word."

If it's all on the web it can't use Word. If it uses Word or any other editor, then it's not all on the web. Dennis Miller needs to put a rant on the patent office.

  9. It's done on purpose on Management To Blame For IT Worker Shortage? · · Score: 1

The shortage is in many cases artifical because companies want churn. It may not be so much that it is bad management as it is an actively pursued methodology. The company only wants you for a short term project and wants you to quit of your on free will within 18 months. The employeer has no interest in anything except finishing one specific project and doesn't want any long term financial obligations such as retirement, options vesting, etc. From management's point of view they have their cake and get to eat it too. IT personnel are disposable use once throw aways. You want to know why it works the way it does... follow the money trail.
