This is how upper management picks its software... Ok, well it that and kickbacks. Not too many kickbacks for linux software, this could actually be why more companies don't use it.
The point of the whole article wasnt that Microsoft is not allowed to tell people what to do. It's that they shouldn't have to tell them what to do. If nobody cared about linux, they would just ignore the fools and the totally free software and their great community attitude.
I find it complety hilarous that the big company with there multi-million dollar marketing budget can't compete with some volunteers that are passionate about their software.
Somone create a dns client that files all existing ICANN dns under a.ic and alternic under.an and any other DNS system can be another tld.. then these people can stop fighting already.
Of course that makes the already confusing dns system that much more complex. Oh well, we can always discuss it on slashdot.org.ic
Those online games arn't pay-per-play though, they a service-based pay per month. This way, you play as much as you want on a monthly basis. Overall the deal isnt that bad. What ticks me off is that they make you buy the game then they carge you to play it.
"Starting tomorrow, you would have two choices: pay $50 a year for membership or sit through a 20-second Flash-animated commercial (we'll keep it to 75k, which is just plenty to do a nice text-based Flash animation with an image or two)."
There is a third choice. Get your news from somewhere else. I hate companies (Microsoft) that believe "We can do whatever we want and the consumer will be stuck with it!" There will always be an alternative, and if there isnt an alternative, someone will come up with one.
Windows has been my platform of choice precicely because of the smooth edges on the fonts.
Really? In all the years windows9x has supported this I have never noticed a difference. I always attributed this to the fact that I run my monitor at a real high resolution where any anti-alaising effect would be diminished.
For the most part at my job (programmer in an IS dept) most of the "working employees" are around my age (22). I see very intellegent people get ignored when they are correct. But I am a recently hired employee that was hired because I have 4 years of experience at client-server development. My supervisor (same age) was recently just hired back after working at another company for the past few months. Because we are more knowledgable then anyone else at the company at what we do, we get the respect we deserve. And, we make sure the people working with us are treated the same. It's sad to see such a double standard, but if I was one of the ones getting dumped on, I would just quit and find a better company. (actually this company is much better then my last one, which is why I am here now)
Most intelegent programmers laugh at the thought of a "tech union"... demand is so high that for most of us we could easily walk and get another job. I recently did just that, much more frendly co-workers and much higher pay. Tho I noticed that there are a great many out there in the tech world that couldn't quite make it into the "elite" status. In fact I see so many freeloaders in my workplace, it makes me sick. The last thing we need is a union to protect these people. There are so many tech jobs out there right now that if you need a union to protect you from management, it means you just arn't smart enough to be in that line of work.
Although I am clearly biased on this point, I just dont see any other need for a tech-union, perhaps someone else can enlighten me on this issue.
5-10 channels is plenty for me.. problem is that 95% of channels you get suck.. So I have to live with digital cable's 250 channels of crap so I can get the 3 or 4 channels I actually care about...
TCI sucked pretty bad.. AT&T has been pretty good to us tho. 2 months after they took over they replace all the cable lines in our service area, now instead of downtime every other week, its more like every 3 or 4 months.
No, he was talking about the l33t hackorz that downloaded the source for windows... turns out that it was just a 3 gigabyte file that had the string "Bill Gatez rulez" over and over again.

Yeah I get that too alot... a lot of spammers take an address @home with a common name and just keep adding letters to it, the header will look like this...
nitehawk1@home.com
nitehawk2@home.com
nitehawk3@home.com
nitehawk4@home.com
nitehawk5@home.com etc... no wonder @home's email servers are so faulty...
Yeah, it does play DVD's, and it does a damn good job of it... My matrix DVD would have all kinds of damn problems when playing on a PC (with software decoding) but everything plays flawless on the PS2. With the $20 remote control it takes the place of a $200 dvd player too.
Honestly I dont know, but until I hear otherwise I'm not taking any chances. At least with 2 truly identical processors (stepping and all), you can be pretty sure they are going to work fine.
It would be nice to hear from an expert on the subject tho...
I work for GAC. Our users always tell us our software has a bad personality. Guess now we will have proof.

How many people posting here actually HAVE a PS2?
Now, how many have a dreamcast?
Since there are about a million more dreamcasts out there then PS2's public favor will be in favor of the dreamcast.
I do actually have a PS2, and for the type of games that consoles do well, console-style RPG's and action games, it beats any PC ive seen.
The sports games (which high-end PC's usually rule on) are very close to being better on the PS2.
Its much too early on to be able to say that "Console X is much better then console Y" or "This console will never stand up to my PC"
Lets check back on this in a year or so. (Tho, knowing slashdot we will see this article again next week when some other website flames the PS2)
