I get the distinct impression that Uber, and other self-driving wannabes are just trying to rack up miles so at some point they can tell the states/Feds, "Hey look, we have X million miles of self-driving with hardly any accidents". Then they will be greenlighted to go ahead for full autonomy. My fear is that they are just getting easy miles (loops of low traffic, low pedestrian, no inclement weather, etc) , not much above test track difficulty, and when these things hit the real streets there will be a ton of problems, some involving more fatalities. Hoping Waymo isn't amongst this crowd.
Reminds me a bit of Theranos....the tech isn't there, but keep plugging ahead hoping that it will magically appear before you go live.
I thought the same thing....really just some fault? It was 100% all your company's fault, full stop no equivicating. This guy, Zuck, etc. if you were to feed them all truth serum, it would be something like, "I don't give a s--t about some random person getting killed, I am rich, I am powerful, and people should adore me because of it."
When ING Direct first came out years ago I jumped on board. Even back then I didn't ever have a need to go into a brick and mortar bank, didn't do a ton of ATM withdrawls.. More importantly they offered a savings rate that was almost 2% over the going rate at the banks and CU's.
However that higher rate narrowed over time to be about equal and for some special promotion I jumped ship to one of the mega banks. I will say this, the big banks do a very good job with the apps and online stuff now. Checking is free, etc etc.
These alt banks will only win my business if their rates are much, much better. They might sweep up customers who have issues with budgets, overdrafts and stuff like that. The Mega banks are nearly criminal around that sort of thing, but that's not anything I need to deal with.
My initial response is while I dislike Pai, this seems like a good idea. But RTFA there is a nuance to this that wasn't in the summary.
"...Chairman Pai’s action would give carriers unlimited freedom to censor any speech they consider ‘controversial,’ " This is from some guy that has a beef with FCC, but still seems to be a real concern.
Fine you are into guns I am not. I recognize the second amendment, appreciate it's original intent, and don't have an interest in subverting any parts of the Constitution. But politicians on both sides are adept at ginning up the electorate on this issue, while really big and bad structural problems are weakening the country.
By all standard definitions I should call myself a conservative, but cannot because there is no political party/person that reflects even a shade of true conservatism. In the past people calling themselves 'conservatives' inserted themselves and their government into citizens personal affairs (gay marriage, religion, etc) which is the opposite of what it should be. They continue to run up huge debts to pay for huge government (yes, Defense Dept counts as government) , which should also not be considered conservative. Trample on states rights when deemed political convenient, massive surveillance on citizens in violation of multiple amendments, and so on.
While I understand your point, you must agree what you have written is strictly theoretical at this point. As a flurry of posters will mention the US Govt under multiple conservative administrations has greatly expanded in scope, cost, and people. The surveillance state has multiplied dramatically, defense of course, and even ginormous social programs like Medicare Part D under George W.
Conservatives are also supposed to believe in not spending more than you take in, but that went the way of the dodo bird decades ago. It would be interesting for you to point out a US national politician that best reflects true conservatism.
Really...kickass? It looks like drones and video camera towers. Oh, wait no, I forgot they have the magic of AI too!! That makes it better.
Would love to know how how much they will try to ding Uncle Sam for this junk. Another company, Elbit, sold 46 such towers for $145 million.
Rocket Lab is charging $10k per pound to orbit while SpaceX is at $2.5 lb. But as they said in TFA in today's world if you have a small satellite, you have to wait to hitch a ride on a bigger rocket. And depending on the orbit you need, the size of your payload, the type of the primary payload, you could be in for a long wait.
Rocket Lab is offering the "Overnight" equivalent option where you can get your payload in orbit much faster, but at greater cost. Will be interesting if there is indeed a economically market for this. Are we going to see school PTA's pulling $50k fundraisers to get the science class' cubesat in orbit?
Agreed. And this is the most inane map-improvement I can think of.. If I want to see the vegetation detail I would just switch to satellite view. If anything this 'improvement' is Apple maps is more reason to stick with Google maps which has been rock solid.
I hope it's a very, very clever stealth bomber Finland is selling. "Yes it is invisible to RADAR, infrared, visible, basically the entire EM spectrum. It also works through a quantum tunnel cloak so that you can't even touch or feel it. The price...only $300 million each, less than an F-22! sure sign here, and we'll personally fly them to your base!"
Really...people are still worried about the front door attacks? Not too long ago, my employer w/ >10,000 employees hired a company to send out fake phish emails to see who would take the bait and click. Over 15% of the people clicked on the bogus link. Extrapolating, would indicate that there are 1,500 times from one single email, that a bad guy could pwn our Fortune 500 company. Probably already does.
Hell, we even see news items that the NSA contractors are USB'ing data around, dropping passwords, and using their hotmail accounts at work etc. Front door breaks are for academics, interesting mathematically, but not useful day to day.
Even putting aside the moral questions, how have American firms not learned from others experience. It is likely that if Google sets up shop in China, their IP and trade technologies will be ripped off, and they will be shown the exit as a native Chinese firm takes their place. I get that China is a huge market, but the gamble doesn't seem worth it. Safer to invest elsewhere.
"[B]roadband providers do not make a stand-alone offering of telecommunications," the FCC also said. "[B]roadband providers generally market and provide information processing capabilities and transmission together as a single service, and consumers perceive that service to include more than mere transmission."
This to me is further reinforcement that Pai only really cares about the corporations involved. Everyone I know from tech saavy-to-noob, young-to-old, just wants straight up Internet access. None of the extra junk services that Comcast, TimeWarner, etc want to sell you. Pai is just such a straight up Corp shill I can't believe people from all political stripes aren't insisting that he be fired.
You can likely extend this as a trait for American's in general. As a nation we have far and away the most economic power, most military power, massive and varied natural resources, and a forgiving climate. Our immediate border neighbors are small, friendly, non-threatening, and there's only two of them. Our enemies are all geographically very, very far away, across huge oceans. And yet, as a society we feel like the rest of the world is out to get us. Or is cheating us our of our fair share in some way, even though demonstrably we have way more than our 'fair share'.
Not even a Democrat/Republican thing as I see this behavior in myself as well, and it'd be interesting to know what the underlying cause is.
Yep, anyone who believes that major DoD contracts are issued on anything other than lobbying and various forms of legal-ish kickbacks are kidding themselves.
The telemarketing calls would be very easy to shut down on a combination of infrastructure changes and just throwing the book at bad-actor telemarketers. But no, Pai doesn't care. He's just thinking about his next gig.
Sounds trivial, but I always thought this would be a great platform for the Democrats to try and show people they aren't completely useless. Everyone I know gets these things, whether it's on your cell or landline, and whoever solves the problem might get some goodwill on an election day from unexpected quarters.
He's totally being a dick about it, and I agree with other posters, I reviewed the slide deck and it was a amateurish presentation. Everyone pretty much knows that the one most important aspect of being promoted is if your boss likes you or not. And that has a lot to do with if you are of the same ilk. Same personality, like the same sports team, maybe the same college, hang out at the same bar, or are friends of a friend. All of that crap that has nothing to do with merits. So if women were only allowed to start publishing papers in 1965...per the profs own chart, yeah, sorry but even 50 years later they are going to be underrepresented because you need a bunch of old profs to kick it first.
And that's what I don't get about the Slashdot crowd. Everyone has a story about Joe Blow getting promoted just because he was in the same frat as his boss, but when it comes to the women question it's all "Meritocracy is all that counts". Where does anyone see a true meritocracy anywhere in society. Yes, barriers are greatly reduced, but like most stuff you will need a few generations to expire before things are truly level.
Much like Apple Computer way back in the day (1997), the current entity of Tesla is in real bad financial shape. Probably close to default despite all the really hard work on the Model 3. So Musk finds a surefire way to get himself kicked out of the company, via tweet. Company will declare Chapter 11 without him, saving himself from the taint of doing it himself. He focuses on SpaceX for a bit, and then he comes back in a few years like Steve Jobs returning to Apple. Lightened of the debt load, Tesla can become profitable as a going enterprise, and Musk gets to be deified once again.
So no one in DC cares about citizens privacy, nor about the buying and selling of data, nor about backdoor deals with the NSA, nor about supporting the Chinese communist government....no, this congress wants to focus on that whiny, snowflake, and frankly clueless dufus, Damore. Or is it the sad puppy faces and speeches of Sergei at Google HQ after Hillary lost?
Really, Kevin McCarthy (R) , this is important? Of course it's not, more pointless politicking. And Pichai decides to show up to this one and skip the other hearings because he also knows it's a show. No threat of any action (see 1st Amendment). As many have said, there are plenty of other company boardrooms where there were celebrations after Trump won...who's digging into the Disney Corp records, or AT&T or Verizon, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, the list is endless. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Oh, and how about all you fiscal conservatives fix the debt/deficit problem first then deal with your pet projects once that's all wrapped up.
This clip about simple money management from the movie "The Gambler" is finding new life on the Internet. Would be a worthwhile lesson for these young millionaires.

Isn't this sort of exactly scheme Chairman/CEO's typically pull? They run the board of directors and then get to vote on their own pay packages funded by other people's money
"Hmm, I think I deserve a 50% raise this year, all in favor? The motion is carried."
"Next topic, employment expenses are rising drastically, we need to start making company-wide reductions."
If you can convince a user to download a malicious app, isn't that the end of the story as far as hacking their phone? Unless you are Dr. Evil from Austin Powers the addition of sonar tracking on top of the initial trojan is overkill.
I get that the sonar bit is clever, by why is it necessary to link that part with stealing passwords, other than to make it a little more press worthy.
That's another reason that decent houses, in decent locations within cities, are so expensive. People are willing to trade $$$ for all that accumulated commute time. Your SOMA condo is pricey, but you get to/from work in downtown SF in 10 mins.
Reminds me a bit of Theranos....the tech isn't there, but keep plugging ahead hoping that it will magically appear before you go live.

Next thing you know someone will want to reintroduce the vending machine...

I so miss their television show. I still quote from it regularly and no one knows what I'm talking about.
