    I would say that it's a reliable indication of extreme ego and lack of skills when a programmer eschews comments entirely.

    Sort of like the guy who declines to explain something to you because, "It's too complicated"

    The inability to provide a simple layman's definition is, to me, a sign that someone really doesn't know his stuff all that well.

    Either that, or he just doesn't like you much.

    It's been my experience that people who leave competent comments are both the people who write competent code and who can touch-type.

    I would imagine that when you have to peck out 400 lines of code using four fingers, there's very little incentive for you to go back in and start trying to explain things.

    I sometimes comment my code in excruciating detail. But that's when what I've done was so hard to figure out in the first place, I want to make sure that whoever comes after me or if I have to revisit it again, there's some explanation as to what the hell's going on.
