There's nothing noble about me exchanging money for groceries, and there's nothing noble about my employer paying me for my time. It's a business transaction, period.
If you have issues with the location of New Orleans, you need to take them up with a bunch of Spaniards who have been dead for 200 years or more.
The Army Corps of Engineers is a pretty well-run organization, and not long on the pork and mismanagement that plague most government projects, and all government projects in Louisiana.
If you don't want your tax dollars going to disaster relief, please move to a country that doesn't have natural disasters.
I'm not interested in anybody's orthodoxy. I'm not interested in arguing with you deterministic or non-deterministic philosophy. I'm not interested in what evolution "appears to imply".
I'm interested in science.
I also happen to have a completely separate interest in history, philosophy, and Man's relationship with God. But those things are not scientific pursuits.
I understand Jesus just fine. If you think He said that we aren't descended from a common ancestor with the great apes, you don't understand Him very well. You assume that if I disagree with you, I must not believe in God. You are vastly mistaken.
I don't dispute your articles of faith. I do dispute the attempt to pass them off as scientific.
I'm not asserting the certainty of anything. I will assert that both theories provide useful, predictive models of how the world works.
Newtonian physics works remarkably well to describe any number of macro-scale phenomena. Is the theory complete? No. Is it perfectly accurate? Certainly not. Is it a useful tool? Absolutely.
But, according to my parent poster, I'm supposed to judge them. How do I judge their Christianicity? Who is the Better Believer?
I believe that judgement is reserved to God, and any mortal who thinks that it's up to them to decide who is or is not fit for God's grace is committing a terrible sin. It's my calling to love my fellow man, as I love myself, not to judge them.
Wow, that sounds a lot like something Jesus said...imagine that. It's almost like I've been a practicing Christian for 20 years or something...
Who's a better Christian? an Episcopal pastor who's also a marine biologist, and believes in the scientific theory of evolution, or somebody who bombs an abortion clinic, or a priest who covers up the molestation of a child by a brother priest, or a judge at the Salem Witch Trials?
Same is true of high school diplomas and/or college degrees. This is not a phenomenon unique to the IT industry.
Certifications are basically a way of simplifying due diligence. If you hire somebody certified, you can at least make a cogent argument that you TRIED to hire a not-bonehead. If you hire somebody not certified, and they don't work out, well, guess who gets scapegoated?
It's an artifact of blamestorming, which is part of working for other people. Play the game, or don't.
Create a smart playlist that includes the criteria: Genre NOT Spoken Word and track length LESS THAN 9 minutes (or whatever). Those are some of the criteria in my Party Mix (which I listen to a lot), and I feed that into the Party Shuffle.
Smart Playlists can do whatever you want. No reason to have dedicated flags...
Maybe, rather than shutting them down, you could explain to them why the Supreme Court thought that their right to free expression (that on my reading of the Constitution didn't include an age horizon) is somehow trumped by your notion of a well-dressed student.
Heck, explain it to me. I'm not sure I understand the justification myself.
I would expect any teacher to take any student who opines anything seriously. Any kid with the gumption to actually make an assertion, who has the courage to argue their point and stick to their guns, and demand a well-argued response (rather than an Argument from Authority), is OK in my book.
You can have any opinion you want on rocket nozzle design. If you're curious enough, and intellectually honest enough, to allow somebody else to explain where you're right, and explain where you're wrong, then you'll do fine. If you just shut your eyes and plug your ears, and insist you're right and everybody else is wrong, you're going to have a tough time.
It's fashionable to pretend like modern, computerized cars are magically more fragile than the marvels of engineering that are early 70's American crap-mobiles.
I'm just pointing out that it's a bit disingenuous to compare alkaline batteries (which most people do not have the expertise and equipment to recharge) and Li-ion battery packs in terms of shelf life alone.
I care about form AND function. That's why I bought an iPod, and I have zero issues with the battery.

I've got a couple of Safari windows, with different batches of tabs. Expose works great to keep them all handy.
Works fine for me...I'm not sure I understand your complaint...

I painted my car blue, so therefore I must have blue eyes.
Your analogy, and your line of "reasoning", are equally specious.
Get back to me when you can prove that Jesus is not the Son of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and we'll talk.
I don't dispute for a moment that intelligence can create new forms of life.
I do dispute the scientific validity of the claim that ONLY intelligence can create new forms of life.
Your straw man is now on fire.
Works great on my iPod. Never had a problem.
Oh wait, I'm supposed to think that the only reason to buy an iPod is because I'm a fashion victim...my bad.

We shall indeed know them by their fruits.

The right to? Sure. Guess who has more marketing dollars, ODSL or Microsoft?
"that taste better" to you...hence, a matter of taste.
There are sodas I like better than Coke, but they don't cost less. (Stewart's, Jones, etc...)
You mean a beta service is not feature complete? Stop the presses. Or something.
Get a GRIP, people...

Did Geddy Lee touch you in your bathing suit place?

Go figure.
" yet feel that their opinion should be considered valid"
Yeah, I can see why you'd want to beat that out of them. Much better for them to shut up, keep their heads down, and not make waves.
If the "added socialization" you mention includes the daily physical intimidation, harassment, and abuse I endured in middle school, you can keep it.
If you do it accidentally, once, absolutely not.
If you do it premeditatedly, on a large scale, as some kind of "Fabric Avenger", then absolutely.
I can't wait to be able to un-check ESPN from my menu.
I know that it's the most expensive channel to license, and I never ever watch it. Ever.

I want to see what happens when you try to recharge that AA alkaline cell. Go ahead...I'll wait. Should be exciting. I suggest safety glasses.
