    I think a safe alternative would be handsfree kits. I know when I don't use a kit, I have a hard time swinging my head all the way around to see my blind spots.

    So, I usually turn my cell phone OFF in the car. No point in smoking a cigarette, drinking a coke, and trying to shift and drive while talking on the cell phone.

    (yup, it's funny, laugh...)

    Well, BMW at least saw the market (granted, at what a price) for their "better" engine in the 2001 M3... which, if I ever scrape the cash, I'd buy in a heartbeat.

    And there is a definite difference between American sports cars and Foreign -- the foreign ones seem to handle better (roomate's '95 M3) compared to the american (My '95 Z28). Obviously they're two totally different classes (pricewise), but I just wish that we'd have the ability to have quick, responsive, agile cars that don't have that plasticy feel for 35 grand. Heck, even the new corvette reeks of plastic on the inside, but oh, the outside.

    actually, 16x2channelsx48khz. Closer to 1.5mbit :)

    but that's assuming (and usually, with optical ins/outs on good cards) that the card will do it...

    Heck, while we're at it, what about some of the higher end cards (96khz? or is it 92? I can't remember)...

    I wouldn't buy cds if I could rely on the quality of mp3's. I will listen to slightly crappy mp3's on my home setup, but in the car or on my home theatre, it just doesn't cut it (depending on the encoder, bitrate, etc.... but I'm just a snob)

    What exactly would be the motivation, though? I can see the performance being a big plus, but let's say you bought a 15gig solid state drive.

    Then dropped it about 3 feet.

    I've seen normal hard disks go wacko over this.

    My point being is that mechanical things wear out. I notice over time that the hard disk in my IBM Thinkpad gets louder. There's definitely wear going on, and after a drive dies, we buy another.

    Just because a hard disk manufacturer gets 100$ from you for that 40gig drive doesn't mean they wouldn't like another 100$ in 2-3 years.

    And it's very simplistic... but.. I was hoping that someone had taken the initiative to actually make it look nice in the car (imagine having a nice black face, tray loading car CD player). Also, it could even be hooked into a laptop/desktop style machine for data reading...

    (I know, the article stated "bad CD rom drives, but hey, here's hoping).

    If I had the time, I'd find an older thinkpad drive that reads CDR's and CDRW's fine, and use it in the dash, and put an led/lcd panel up front to control it (or a computer).

    I don't think the court was trying to rule whether the posting of the information was illegal... however, they were ruling on whether the posting of the information was directly linked to the doctors getting killed.

    am I right? or did I just put egg on my own face?

    guess I'll have to stop reading the comments and read the articles sometimes....

    ok, I know this is a late reply, and the first post wasn't worded to my liking (as of now):

    My point I was trying to make was that is there an arbitrary limit on who gets those services? In other words, to work in the "david vs goliath" style trials, one would definitely have to be the underdog as far as money is concerned.

    Secondly, wouldn't it spur a ton of new lawsuits just because "well, now they can defend themselves and they won't just crumble"? Not that just crumbling is right (in fact, that's the key reason for having this...) but my thought is that someone has to pay for the defender/lawyers' time...

    ??? I just don't see how it can be done. Other than with tax money. :)

    yea, just my contorted input.

    While I do see your point about a "public defenders office" etc.; Who decides who gets those services? Granted, I think we could all see that Mister Corporation X and their bazillion dollars would crush Mom and Pop Y with a lawsuit at any point (over something as weak as this); but I think you'd have other problems to worry about. I guess what I mean is it probably would cause more trouble in the end.

    3. MusicMatch? ugh. Don't make me slap you silly. Using Lame under VBR (I know, not as good as their 256 cbr and -k) my tbird 927 does a full 45-50 mins rip in 30 mins. CBR would go faster.

    I think one of the real problems with this would be:

    1. This is too complex for an ordinary user.
    2. If there is a program made to "package" and "unpackage" the song in this manner, then it's a good possibility that someone in the 'biz could crack it. Face it, there are some smart people that work for these companies.

    What I see happening is that things such as napster will be driven underground (similar to opennap). However, this will disable the "common man" from just clicking on AOL and grabbing the latest hit.

    Those of us in the know, however, will still be stealing left, right, and center.

    another dumb question --> Does anybody know of a portable CDR/CDRW that will play mp3's from 32kb to 320kb, vbr as well?

    I encode most of my newer files now with Lame using the VBR option to 320k, and usually result in files with an average of 224k, but some spots do hit 320k, and I haven't seen any player yet that will handle this... I am seriously considering getting an MZ-R70 instead of something with a hard drive etc. Even though it would be a little more inconvenient to get the files on the thing, I could have discs to switch out depending on my mood, and not have to worry about killing a hard disc.

    I know this is way offtopic, but since we're speaking about the weird sound compatibility problems (almost in an aside), the one reason I will not run linux on my Thinkpad 390x is that the sound "stutters" through the ess-solo1. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. As far as I can tell, this laptop uses a Lucent winmodem as well, so I don't think IBM will be doing any active r&d for lucent's modem anytime soon...

    I would wager that this is due to their being no money in putting 12 civilians in orbit. I'm skeptical that any organization could come up with the kind of money to get people into orbit safely.... I know for a fact that I wouldn't pay big bucks to be the first one out there.

    But then you've got a catch-22... I think that in your solution, people would get rather uninterested in the game quickly if the demand was low for the "better" items.... I just don't think it would appease the hardcore players (then again, you can't please everyone... can you?)

    Is it possible that most of the software that would be available for Windows 9x would run under Wine?

    I can't think that the educational software would necessarily take more of the advanced features of Windows; although you may be against buying Windows products.

    I would think that this would be a good solution in case the Linux solutions don't have what you need.
