I actually don't like the way the ipod interfaces with the computer. That, and I don't find the interface terribly useful.
I'll give you that - it's an interesting interface, and the nano is handy, but I am not interested in owning one. In fact, if I could find a mini version of my Zen without creative getting into that whole "touchscreen" area on the player, I'd be set....
OK, interfaces are nice, but for the most part, I can forgive most of an interfaces' shortcomings if the sound quality is there.
From what I've heard of my wife's nano, it's pretty decent. No background hiss - which seems to be the bane of cheaply put together MP3 players.
So here's what I've got now:
1. NexIIa - Frontier Labs' compactflash reading MP3 player : This was bought because I figured hey, got a digital camera, have spare CF card... but I hate listening to this player on low ohm headphones because of the background hiss. On a stereo input (higher impedance) not so much noise....
2. Palm TX - bought this as a replacement to my aging Palm Vx. Great screen, battery life, but the MP3/sound output is noisy. Sucks they can't put a decent DAC in a 300$ PDA.
Now, I do use a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra (200$, 30GB, owned for 2-3 years?) on a daily basis. I'd like to find a smaller player, and I'm just leaning towards the Zen Nano or perhaps their 8gb zen photo mini or whatever it's called, just from the standpoint that the sound quality from my Nomad is top notch. However, with this new "Plays4Sure" crapola, and not being able to drag and drop files (which I can do on the Nomad with their driver and explorer add-on) kind of miffs me. Almost enough to find another manufacturer... but... everyone seems to be going DRM now...
So, if anyone knows, how's this Samsung unit sound? Any hiss through normal (32 ohm) phones? Any crackling if you use the EQ and it's turned up loud?

Their prices were already chosen to maximize profit before the fine; the fact that they got fined doesn't change the competitive landscape for the company at all.
I beg to differ.
Ever been a part of a corporation that was truly involved in a LARGE fine from the government? Let me clue you in on something... it DOES change the competitive landscape, because now they have to come up with that money out of the shareholders pockets to pay for the fine....
And let me tell you, shareholders don't like that.... so, where do you get the money from???
That's the thing, though - those iffy investments out there for PC gamers would have a tangible effect, even if it's something that a casual gamer would not freak out over.
Consider getting an extra 2-5 fps in your favorite FPS because you've paid twice as much as "value ram" for the best tweaked ram there is... There's definitely a tangible benefit here, and quite possibly an objective benefit.
Depending on who you ask, it will be iffy. But will it be tangible?
Reminds me of a saying.. something about flies and honey and vinegar.....
Other than sounding a little abrasive with the cussin', you are spot on with the thoughts in my head. If it is clearly posted that there is little cell reception in the area BECAUSE of something in the building designed to keep cell signals out, then you as a person are free to make the choice between being reached and watching the latest Tom Cruise flick.
And if you're on call 24x7x365? Well, hope you get paid lots. But you're the exception, not the rule.
Speaking of the Elise, I saw one in person for the very first time last night - at a local restaurant, no less.
I have always wanted to drive one of those, but after seeing one in person, you'd have to be friggin' insane to drive on the city streets with that thing!!! You'd get squashed like a bug!
But you don't really get calluses (sp?) from just sitting there and pounding on the bare fretboard. You get them from smashing the strings and sliding on the strings...
Minor difference, but I never got a callous from playing NES, SNES, Genesis or the like... and I only ever got sore thumb syndrome from playing wayyyy too many hours of SF2 and SF2:Turbo....
How would you ever stop anyone from doing those three things? Hell, prohibition was in effect for the entire country and I'm sure there were people still drinking!!!
Besides, if you can't have sex, drugs, and drinking, what kind of college life are you really going to have?:)
There's no other information to be had (and that's the way it should be)
(crotchety old man)Back in my day, we had quadraphonic sound, and... well, it never took off.(/crotchety old man)
Anyways, I do agree with you that stereo is generally most accepted - especially since headphones are mostly 2 channel, humans are mostly 2 channel.. etc. But we can hear location information, so maybe that's a good reason to go for more channels?
(for instance, so that when the drummer does a roll across all the toms, it goes from left to right in the ears).
I don't mind this effect so much when it's played on my home stereo, but on headphones this seems to expand the stage too much.... This in my opinion (again, see "opinion") always makes the instrumentation seem somewhat fake.... I know when I listen to live music, I usually don't hear drum rolls move from in-left-ear to in-right-ear, because the sound stage doesn't exactly work like that.....
I think the poster meant that on average, all size CDs would come down to around 500MB. Again, on average.
A 700MB audio cd would probably compress easily down to 500MB, depending on the music. I've got some audio cds that only have about 40 minutes (out of a total of 80 or so, right?) so those would probably skew it down to 300 - 350MB....
YES!!! You can do iiiit!!!!

What's funny is that it's probably the same EX for both of you.....

There's no such thing as a big ipod.
;)
Unless you're using a dual-G5 and a car battery to listen to your music....
Actually, when I started work at %big_co%, I worked for two years in the center of a building that had no windows.
Annoying after the first year. Downright depressing at the 2nd. After that stint I moved up north a bit and got a cubicle right by the windows.
Let me tell you, your eyes will adjust, and it is really nice to have something to stare off at when you're frustrated with whatever you're doing.
I never thought I'd like windows either... turns out, they rock.
Some days I think to myself that there's nothing funny about tourette's syndrome.
And then you came along.
heh..

Now, that's just funny....
You should move a little to the left. No one likes it when you crap in the sink, fyi.
As an afterthought, I totally agree with you. My only point is that if a company bleeds money, someone pays for it...
And yea, hopefully the investors get out or the company turns things around before going broke.
Their prices were already chosen to maximize profit before the fine; the fact that they got fined doesn't change the competitive landscape for the company at all.

Unfortunately, that cost would just get passed on to the consumer.
I'm all about upping security, but it has to be cost effective, for both the consumer AND the company...
Damn, the dude even bolded what was wrong with the statement, and you blew right by it!
Whoosh! Swing and a miss!
But the best decision we made was to rent a truck for the day and donate it to the local ARC/Salvation army/etc (instead of just trashing it).
You had me confused for a spell there - I thought you were telling me to rent the truck and then donate the truck!!!

I called a co-worker from our Cisco system - with his home phone number.
"WHO IS THIS?"
"Your wife is pretty...."
