Well, on-job interaction is even more invaluable. Professors are disconnected from the work environment unless they too work. Also, if you can't teach yourself this stuff, you will *NEVER* be able to stay on top of the field.
Some people get lucky and receive further training, but even then, training shows a lack of analytical skills that you should have learned or understood before you took the job.
You have to be able to read books, you have to know how to do research on your own. Maybe CS should stop teaching methodology and start teaching people how to think.
Personally, i think getting my Private Pilot license taught me everything i need to know on how i learn. Can't expect a professor or boss to save your life when it is WHAT YOU KNOW that gets the job done. You die, and its your own darn fault heh.
With Microsoft, they choose what you want and what color it comes in.
Thats funny. When i bought a PC i chose to run Windows XP. Microsoft didn't slap my wrist and tell me i would die if i wanted to run FreeBSD, Linux or OS/2.
This isn't about regulation. It's about competition.
Your talking about regulating what a company can sell. Tell me this isn't about regulation again? I don't want DellXP, CompaqXP, MSXP, GatewayXP. I don't want a stripped down car either.
Many other people do. Having options makes some decisions harder, but our lives are better as a result. I'd rather have 10 models to choose from than one. Let the companies scramble for my business, and let me put them in their place. This is what happens when the free market is in good health.
You do have 10 models to choose from. You have FreeBSD, OS2, Linux, Solaris X86, FreeDos, DOS, CP/M, Netware, Darwin and tons of other OS's to choose from. You aren't comparing appls to apples here man. VW's don't interchange with Fords. I can't take the spark plugs out of my rx-7 and fit them in my tiburon. I can't yank the computer of of my rx-7 and put it in my tibby either. They're incompatible BUT THE SAME. Just like Windows vs Linux vs FreeBSD they don't all run natively every program written, but they have one thing in Common - THEY ARE AN OPERATING SYSTEM Without choice, is my life worth living?
Dude, you have problems if your going to commit suicide because of windows Windows is CHEAP, Affordable and RUNS JUST FINE.
Windows is not cheap, and it is a kludge. It does not run fine. In fact, it's behavior is so inconsistent sometimes that I want to punch my monitor.
Prove to me how windows is a Kludge? It runs great on every pc i have. I tote around my dell notebook all day long and *NEVER* have problems with Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Runs great, everything works out of the box. Not when all roads lead to Microsoft.
Linux doesn't lead to microsoft, FreeBSD doesn't lead to microsoft. How do "All roads lead to microsoft"?
When what I'm buying is selling for its true market value. Operating systems used to be expensive, but the market has spoken. Other companies have accepted this fact. For example, I can get Solaris, RedHat Linux, and OpenBSD media for less than $50 (one of these used to be really expensive).
That is entirely YOUR perogative that things should be free or cheap. It is wrong for microsoft to give away internet explorer but it is fundamentally right for people to give away an entire OS for free? How does you logic make sense?
I usually don't respond to cowards, but windows is cheap.

For most of the working citizens, time is money. Remember that when it takes you a few days to tweak a linux box vs 2 hours to install, patch and tweak a windows box.

It Isn't a matter of "what choice of windows do you want today" but "What choice of operating system do you want today"
Don't let this choice BS get to your head. The government can't dictate our choice just like microsoft can't, so i don't know what the big deal about stripping down windows is. Windows is CHEAP, Affordable and RUNS JUST FINE. I don't know about you but i HATED The days when i had to buy Stacker for 99 bucks, QEMM for 69.00 bucks and DESQview for 199 bucks just to run my Wildcat BBS program that cost 399 bucks. I'm pretty happy that a 199.00 product does all of that and more, and i'm SORRY, but that *IS* innovation.
Just like my 500.00 coffee table that lifts up with ease and turns into a desk. Its just an ordinary coffee table that costs alot to everyone else but me who knows the innovation behind it, and yes, adding fatures, functionality, dependablility and useability IS INNOVATION.
This isn't about Microsoft Owning the roads, they *DO* own them. You can CHOOSE YOUR OWN GODDAMN ROAD THOUGH. If you don't like taking the toll road then take the free country road.

First of all, People complain the Xbox is just rehashed versions of games you already have on your PS2. Well, i don't have a PS2, so it isn't a rehashed game and secondly, 99% of your PS2 games are rewrites of PSX games. Not much is new for PS2.
My xbox has tons of hours of play from Halo to Project Gotham and several different people running through oddword begining to end.
I don't have many games, but come on, it isn't about the amount of games you own, but the quality of games you own.
The Xbox is here to stay, and selling really well. I already have like almost a 100 titles to choose from and the sucker hasn't even been out a year. The Games have been INCREDIBLE for FIRST generation and *NOTHING* is standing in the way of the xbox.
Incase you didn't know the average Xbox owner is 25 to 36 years old. This croud is a technology oriented and often wealthy crowed. The Xbox has enjoyed a NEVER before seen selling of 3.2 games per console and well, nothing has repeated that yet. The PS2 is for the 18 to 22 year old croud and the nintendo cube thing is any age really.
Sure the PS2 sells alot, but there isn't a single game i havn't already played on another console that i liked on the PS2. For all those people saying "Halo will be on the PC" but so is Tony Hawk, so is your highly rated GTA3.
I bet it will be another story come this october when the xbox has been around for a year, sold 5 million units and launches the online gaming network. From racing to Unreal Championshop the PS2 nor Gamecube have anything BUILT IN to compete. The "peripheral" network has never taken off for *ANY* console so i don't see the PS2's ability to use external devices as any means to compete against the Xbox's built in broadband support.
Yes, the PS2 has a lerge library of decent games and has some great titles you can't get anywhere else, but so does the xbox.
And i'm sorry, if your pushing graphics, gameplay, connectivity and peripheral support the xbox winds hands down.
Remember todays games are only pushing today's tvs. The xbox will be able to push graphics beyond what anyone can imagine when it comes to 1080 and 760 hdtv.
Hehe, i don't think your problem is the phone companies, look where you living. Northern NJ. ewwww.
But really, Verizon stinks, so does sprint, but i chose the lesser of the two evils that gave me the most bang for my buck and then expensed it to work:)
Download build 49 of blazer browser. Works like a charm. My phone came with Palm OS 3.5.3 + *2 fixes already, so you may want to look into upgrading if you have an older version.
And when you get your phone in, if you choose a year long contract from sprint and are a new customer you get a 75.00 rebate. (atleast i did)
Now for the 40 bucks or so after all rebates, you get a wireless phone, wap device, cell phone, great calling plan and a full blow Palm OS PDA to boot.
The Kyocera 6035 is basially free with a SprintPCS plan.
Long Battery Life
PalmOS 3.5
8 Megs ram
Multi-Mode Cell support
Excellent Palm Phone Integration
Built in Wireless Modem
Works GREAT with Blazer Browser
The phone supports SMS and tons of other features. Sure it is a tad big, bit it is worth it. Sprint is upgrading there network as well to suport 1000 character SMS messages to other networks as well.
I can check my mail, telnet into the servers and run some checkup scripts, surf the web and talk to my wife all on a single device. Plus i can drag the cradle with me, and use the wireless modem from my laptop and login to the interenet while i'm on the train. Albeit only 14.4, but better then nothing.
The Kyocera is about 130.00 from Sprintpcs.com and you get a 50.00 and 75.00 rebate.. so its only a few bucks. BlazerBrowser is a free download and for more information check out
People have a right to freedom of speech. I have voiced my complaints many times against crappy vendors, crappy banks, crappy stores and crappy products.
But what would happen if this dude continues to win, setting precendences for companies like Microsoft to sue slashdot for example on how slashdot user continue to bash windows/microsoft products.
I use DSLreports constantly to express my opinions of products from routers to broadband service and i KNOW it can get nasty on there. What would happen of COmcast sued dslreports and everyone on there? What if lucent got sick of hearling complaints about companies products or services and did the same?
Heck EPINIONS.COM does a fantastic job keeping the consumer aware of products and scams, we should go rate this company on epinions.com as a horrible company to do business with.
My list of companies to stay away from is.
1. Cross country bank 2. Verizon 3. Southwestern Bell 4. Apex collections. 5. Blockbuster (music/video/whatever.. they all steal)
Consumers have a right to now, and freedom of speech even includes the ability to bitch about something.
Halo, Project Gotham and you can't deny the charm of Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.
Halo - Graphics, Music, Gameplay, Depth
PGR - Tons of tracks, great music, great graphics, tons of features
Oddworld - love it or hate it, the game has character and if you beat the darn thing you think of munch as a friend!
Virtua Fighter 4 is out, i still play My DC for there is nothing comparing to Soul Calibur.
I tell you what though, halo is awesome. Crank up the sound, get a decent component input tv, turn off the lights and be prepaired to be glued to your tv and pissed off when you feel the pinch of the enemy coming after you with nothing to do but run:)
seriously, the AI is great. When your team is ambushed and yelling to fall back and you have to roll with them because there are 4 enemy drop ships coming in and there is no ammo left you can't do anything but run and feel your heart racing. Get behind a rock, sniper our some enemies and keep on running hehe.
great game, and it DOES require skill as long as you don't choose "Easy".
Your statement is so full of irony it isn't funny.
"MS spent millions(from what I understand) studying GUI's and making them look better"
So it is okay for kde developers to essentially 'steal' the ideas and push it in a free product and that makes us better then Microsoft because it is linux and not windows.
Oh well. I just said i thought it was strange how the linux paradox is feeding from the windows look and defended as such. Yet windows is so horribly bad for whatever reason and just because this is KDE it is great.
We all have opinions like we all have assholes. You can certainly do in windows what you can do in linux and vice versa. Just find it funny as emulation is just a way to show appreciation for a superior product. (yet any linux user will try and prove that invalid). Just like people try and emulate peoples ideas, procedures, knowledge and resources, they do it because of the reason you said, someone spent millions developing a product that works, looks great and sold it to the market.
Actually with OS/2 the interface was seperate from the OS.
I remember dropping the GUI all together and using a text based switcher to run my BBS in.. didn't need a gui, just a alt-tab interface to the os2 cmd prompt so i can run PCBoard 15.1 and play sierra games at the same time.
What the heck does this have anything to do with showing up on Darwin awards? He knows how to weld, he obviously understands metalargy and well, anyone can do this.
Now if it was done by some hackers running linux that stole there daddy's blowtorch and used cutupp computer cases and garbage cans, then yes, that could possibly be a death trap.
but people do alot of things on there own, this one is just a cool ass roller coaster. I'd be the coolest kid on the block, err farm, if my dad did this.
But hey, we built a treehouse 15 feet off the ground and did other things that weren't totally safe or professional.
"Do you honestly believe that the benifit of a faster search is enough incentive to rewrite such a major part of the OS?"
Yes, you are a troll. Is it wrong for Microsoft to advance File systems and state specific reasons and right to preach about the many choices in file systems linux/unix has?
When your talking.NET and future technologies that Microsoft is pushing, and if you have *EVER* used Windows XP you will realize that having faster searches and file retrievals is MUCH needed.
Say when you open a folder of 5,000+ mp3's and it searches the ID3 tags of every song and displays artist/title as part of the description, having an optimized file system for quicker searches of data on the disk will only streamline this more.
so yes, this is cool, and yes, there is alot more then just "fast searches" as you put it.
Excuse me, but in order to fly a 767, you have to understand the principles of flight, navigation and controls.
It isn't like driving a car, and it most certainly wasn't simply "because of poor airport and airline security". Who was to know box cutters would be use to hijack and are we supposed to know a terrorist from a non terrorist by the way people look?
More people die every month because of drunk drivers then airplane accidents year round.
Its ignorance of people who never fly that give aviation and General/Private aviation a bad name.
Yes, to fly a 747 and 140mph over VNE takes some skill
Yes aiming an aircraft going over "terminal velocity" into a toothpick in all reality is HARD TO DO.
You don't just pull the yoke and fly'thabitch, you have to understand pitch, yaw, roll control as well as attitude and flight characteristics of the airplane to do what they did. Knowing how to use the GPS, knowing how to disable your transponder, knowing how to comminicate with other hijacked craft and having the skill to know your going to die and be able to control the aircraft is a death defying feat in itself.. i'm just glad the f***ers are dead and not able to do it again.
It was the lack of many factors that caused this, none simply the fault of airlines/aviation.

Hemos,
Guess what, i'm not the CFO of the company i work for either, but i understand our SEC fillings, our budgets, our requirements and what is involved to make our cost center profitable.
Are you saying you don't bother with it or that people are telling you what to do and slashdots "Creative control as promised from the aquisition" is just trying to hide this?
Heck, i'd subscribe if i knew it was a well thought out and developed process. The problem is i don't see any announcements, i don't see any marketing, i don't see anything accept a few "cocky" people giving mixed answers and then saying "next".
I'm sorry, but when WE PAY YOUR BILLS, you DON'T TELL US WHAT IS WRONG OR RIGHT. After all, without the "collective us" you wouldn't have advertising revenue or your quasi famous ego's
Have you already forgotten the customer is always right? Have you forgotten slashdot wouldn't exist without "customers" or visitors in your case?
Why not just move from advertising all the way? Fire your marketing deparment, drop your "ad servers", loose the image hosting bandwidth costs and just use a self service text add system. Move to an NNTP based system where the content is aggregated much the way any NNTP system is.
Everyone has opinions, like everyone has an asshole, so there is no wrong or right. The adds have never been obtrussive, if they get obtrussive then i will leave. I'm not paying just to remove advertising simple as that. I would pay however if i saw you cared about the numbers, you cared about revenue, you cared about cost cutting and your cared about the bottom line.
Instead you guys are still complaining about estimated costs, how you need health care, how you don't sell all your adds how you don't do this or that, but you have never stated HOW YOU COULD MAKE THIS PLACE MORE VALUEABLE AND INCREASE YOUR REVENUES FROM PROVIDING A BETTER PRODUCT.
That is how business is done my friend. LIke i said, i love slashdot, it was worth supporting in adds, it was worth supporting if subscriptions added value, but you guys chose to remove ads over adding value.
I buy magazines for the content and Ads, i like to drool over toys i can't afford, it is part of the whole picture. I liked slashdot for the targeted ads, because they notified me of new products and kept me informed of market trends.
Paying to get rid of part of slashdot is just.. rediculous.

Slashdot went WAY beyond "FUN" when they decided to make a living.
Whenever hemo's complained about having to cover costs of healthcare, salary and 10 servers i just played him my lil pitty violin.
Oh darn, having to work and provide a PRODUCT to the consumers BEFORE you ask for payment is that hard?
Sure slashdot provides a forum, but without the masses, it is just another "Was". There is nothing wrong with making it a legit business.
IT IS WRONG TO BLAME COSTS ON US. It is wrong for us to Subsidize advertising. I will only pay a subscription whenever i get the benifet of that subscription. Like i have said before, i get some great magazines that i subscribe to, but i don't pay for them to remove the adds, i pay for them WITH the adds because the adds make up the magazine along with the content. If i know i'm in the market for a new GPS with the latest jeppenson airport directory loaded or want to replace the prop on my aircraft i can pickup a private pilot magazine and find a dealer that does just that as well as read some interesting magazines.
Hell slashdot doesn't even cross market itself. I can't find linux vendors here, they sold off VA. There is TONS of things slashdot could generate revenue from to provide a great service.
And this is just supposed to be for fun? Living aint easy.
If it wasn't for Mosaic microsoft nor netscape would have done much. Mosaic is what put the universities up on the web.. after all students never buy software:)
BTW, i could care less about netscape, i hated it when the became instant millionairs and went off starting other huge failures and then collapsed themselves. I was rather joyous in seeing them overdue themselves and go under. It wasn't MICROSOFT's fault that Netscape was a disaster, after all HUNDREDS of other companies repeated the same mistakes.
Had netscape used there IPO money for things like development, research and marketing rather then a new headquarters, fast cars and huge parties, they quite possibly could have competed.
Afterall, microsoft didn't start out but in a warehouse, netscape when from rags to ritches and didn't know how to cope and plummeted.
The OS does do things the browser and media players do. Have you ran WindowsXP lately? Have you noticed your media types are now Objects of the OS? Microsoft has matured the OS into a system of objects by which the OS controlls access to.
Notice, they DO controll access to, but they don't control the only access. You can write a program to replace Microsoft Media player much like Real Audio does, you can write a plugin for the media player to play DVD's like several other companies do. You can do whatever you want. Winamp takes over all media types and plays them just great, if not BETTER then microsoft has or ever will.
Buy yes, the media functionality is just part of the OS, much like it was part of BeOS's design.
Slashdot's ignorance on OS indifferences bewilders me.
Since when did smart, educated and knowledgable people get the chance to make IT decisions?
Last time i checked all the MBA's and "execs" running the show are in lub with microsoft or sun.
Heck, linux doesn't offer free coffee cups, shirts or calling cards, so bosses don't want to bother.
Always that darn "Partner" thing.. Maybe if RedHat's bottom line grows a bit people want to say "In partnership with RedHat we have implemented Redhat linux 7.2 on two zillion pc's across the world".
It will take more then 2-3 companies to do this as well, but hopefully stuff like that will happen.
Maybe Suse and AMD's Hammer processor will do what "wintel" did 10 years ago.. that would be shweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
This isn't $5.00 per month, this is $5.00 per thousand page views.
All you are doing is effectively raising there "Cost per Thousand" add numbers, boosting there bottom line. Your subsizing the add revenue by paying for it youserlf and boosting slashdots revenues.
Heck, even when i pay for a magazine, it has adds, but those adds are targeted. For example i subscripe to plane and pilot, the magazine would suck without adds because i like seeing what is new, but i still pay for the magazine becasuse the content is great, the resource is great and i'm not limited by what i can do with that magazine. I can give it away, read it for years, it doesn't vanish or expire unless i burn it.
All slashdot is doing now is subsidizing add revenue and making you pay for a site that ultimately relies on you to survive. I don't see this as a win win for anyone but slashdot boostin the bottom line.
I'm sorry, but not once did it say "were doing this for an overall boost in value to you, our customers" but instead slashdot repeats many times "we figured the best way to satisfy you and our advertisers was to scew you and make you pay a CPM rate now".

1. Cross country bank
2. Verizon
3. Southwestern Bell
4. Apex collections.
5. Blockbuster (music/video/whatever.. they all steal)
Consumers have a right to now, and freedom of speech even includes the ability to bitch about something.
Aren't we still human anymore?
Halo, Project Gotham and you can't deny the charm of Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.
:)
Crank up the sound, get a decent component input tv, turn off the lights and be prepaired to be glued to your tv and pissed off when you feel the pinch of the enemy coming after you with nothing to do but run
seriously, the AI is great.
Just my 2 cents.
odd.. those icons look very much like XP/2k icons heh.
oh well. nice pictures.. looking like a big improvement, but still blocky/QT looking inside the widgets.. sweet borders though!
People build airplanes, and live a long life
People build CRASH DURBY CARS.. and live a long..
People build there own homes, and live a long...
But hey, we built a treehouse 15 feet off the ground and did other things that weren't totally safe or professional.
but thats life'
Yes, you are a troll. Is it wrong for Microsoft to advance File systems and state specific reasons and right to preach about the many choices in file systems linux/unix has?
When your talking
Say when you open a folder of 5,000+ mp3's and it searches the ID3 tags of every song and displays artist/title as part of the description, having an optimized file system for quicker searches of data on the disk will only streamline this more.
so yes, this is cool, and yes, there is alot more then just "fast searches" as you put it.
You actually believe your post?
Paying to get rid of part of slashdot is just.. rediculous.
slashdot is owned by va linux as well..
so whats the diff?
Ahem,
Slashdot went WAY beyond "FUN" when they decided to make a living.
Mosaic is what put the universities up on the web.. after all students never buy software :)
I'm sorry, but not once did it say "were doing this for an overall boost in value to you, our customers" but instead slashdot repeats many times "we figured the best way to satisfy you and our advertisers was to scew you and make you pay a CPM rate now".
oh joy.
