How many people use IM on their smartphones? I don't know a single person who does. Its SMS/MMS/Twitter/Facebook et all all the way.

I'm sure though its only a matter of time before IM functionality is incorporated since the phone is based on cloud services anyway.. instead of an "app for that" it will be a "cloud service" for that.

I really like the fact that MS is consuming external services and publishing them to end users rather than re-inventing them.. can't say the same for google buzzzzzz

I personally thing this is pretty cool. Its not the best device by any means but it has great utility and if verizon can sell an affordable plan this phone makes perfect sense for people who want twitter, facebook, zune and the excellent camera features.

This also puts MS head over heals above every other smartphone company out there in terms of cloud computing and infrastructure. Instead of downloading "an app for that" the cloud simply integrates the service and consumes it and presents it to the users of these devices.

I know my niece and nephew will get one to replace their phones just for the zune service alone.

What i don't get, is why we don't engineer our roads to be safer? If you build a road between a valley and there are 100 deer accidents a year, don't you think it would have been better to have built a raised road so the deer can go under the road and through the only choke point in the entire valley rather then get themselves killed and a few humans while they're at it?

I don't think fog is a problem.. slow down
I don't think rain is a problem - slow down and make sure your tires are safe to begin with

However both those problems can be addressed with roads once again. - roads that correctly drain water so you don't hydroplane off into someones yard or into opposing traffic. Roads that have grade variations so you know when you're traveling outside your direction of travel - so on and so forth.

MS has innovated many products from operating systems to keyboards, mice and hardware systems to their cool ass research department that many companies simply don't bother with anymore.

MS got busted yeah, they paid the price, yeah, they're still being sued for stupid things - of course - as with any big multinational company making money hand over fist.

Xbox live & zune is pretty innovative if you ask me - Apple is struggling to pull off what Microsoft has delivered with their new media eco-system - from Xbox live to Zune to Windows Media Center on Windows 7 - its an amazing product. The fact i can run 2 xbox 360s off my media center and integrate with zune and zune pass and allow my family to watch what they want to watch on their tv, zune or computer is pretty nice - and it was all done for a very affordable price and it works out of the box. Not only that but zunepass offers us a limitless library of music - good by cable tv and good by sirius sat. The 2 360s and pc were paid for after the first year and i'm on year 3 of the hardware and months into windows 7 :)

Windows isn't a closed eco-system, beyond the 50,000 employed directly by Microsoft there are hundreds of thousands if not MILLIONS of jobs created to implement, maintain, enhance, extend and embrace Microsoft products. MS doesn't lock you in to anything and in the case of schools and businesses those businesses are choosing to lock-in to a specific vendor for business reasons - not ideological ones.

Believe it or not, the world wants accountability and you don't get that with open source since the accountability falls squarely on your own resources in most cases. People want a large resource pool, people want a stable business, support they can rely on and an infrastructure than can grow with their business.

There is plenty of open source software regardless of the platform to support academia, small businesses and those that simply hate Microsoft. There is also plenty of Commercial software as well.
