  1. Maybe this is a real stupid thought on Xerox Trying To Sell PARC · · Score: 2

Maybe they should convert into an institution of higher learning --- a technical college. Nerds can still sit on their butts creating cool things, and they will spend some of their time teaching other nerds too. There may be some significant value in the name PARC for technical education marketing purposes.

Higher learning and tech training is very big busines$ in the US.

  2. Will keep on growing much longer... on Is There Anyone Left To Buy PCs? · · Score: 1

Okay, new money may not go to traditional computer hardware (ie Desktops). My household, like most in the US, already has one. I don't need to replace it every year, only every few years. (I don't personally know anyone that replaces their car every year either.)

However, this in no way means computer sales growth will level out very soon! I, like most US adults, do not have a PIM yet. It would be interesting to know how many US households do not have a cell phone yet. Watch what the convergence of cell phone + PIM does for computer sales growth. (Yes, I consider a PIM, e.g., Palm, a computer. And yes, I consider a combination PIM + cell phone still a computer.)

Realism is becoming the standard these days. Dot matrix printers offer a good analogy. About 15 years ago a good dot-matrix printout was good enough for most anything. Today, the standard is much higher but we are still printing the same words!

  6. Several choices for incorporation in the US on Microsoft and Cisco Don't Pay Taxes? · · Score: 1

A company can incorporate in any of several ways in the US. Each has its own merits and tax advantages/disadvantages. Some pay no taxes. However in all cases, the owners are taxed on *most* of the money they take.

Specifically, S-CORP and LLC/LLP are "flow-through entities" --- income/loss is attributed to the owners and the entities themselves can show no profit/loss for tax purposes. Other entities, such as C-CORPs can have profit/loss and are taxed (but at a fixed rate -- I think 30%). The company owners choose the structure that fits their needs best. (e.g., If you are in the 49% tax bracket, the corp pays less on the dollar.)

Does anyone know if corporate structures are similar in other parts of the industrialized world?
