  2. Re:Yay overrated actors on New Mad Max Film · · Score: 1

Not that I disagree with you about your point (I agree with you actually), but nobody says "Ohh! A new film edited by Joe Schmoe is out! I simply MUST see it!" It's the folks in front of the camera that get the big bucks and credit (although directors seem to get some as well).

Perhaps you have a better angle on this since you are in the industry, but it seems to me that the Hollywood film industry is like any other, in that there are some people truly concerned with craft and performance, but most of the folks in the business are concerned more with making short sighted decisions that impact the short term bottom line, and they when they succeed it is in spite of themselves.

What that last bit has to do with Mad Max and Mel Gibson I have no idea, but it felt great saying it.

There's no "war", which usually involves military conflict, or at least two diametrically opposed agendas. It's just a geek or two running around with wireless stuff, delighting in the poor security of wireless networks.

It should be called "virgindriving" or "patheticgeeksdriving".

  5. A quick off-topic anime question on Sen To, X-Men 2 · · Score: 1

I'm not an anime expert, having seen Akira, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, and a couple of others, and I have a question about what I've seen.

What is the significance of the giant bio-mass thingy that seems to appear at the end of so many Japanese movies? Have I just picked the only movies that do that at the end, or is there some cultural significance to the giant, out-of-control bio stuff with tentacles?

Akira has it when Tetsuo does his whole evolution to another level thing, Princess Mononoke has it (I think, I don't remember), it just occurred to me that Final Fantasy had it as well as the Earth spirit Gaia.

I went to a private, parochial high school (over 10 years ago, just to date myself), and they'd worked a deal where they bought some computers with some state money, provided those computers were NOT to be used for any religious purposes.

I took great delight in writing wee basic programs that looked like this:

    10 i=1
20 print "I prayed to Sheeba", i, " times today!"
    30 i=i+1
    40 goto 20

This infurated him to no end, which was great fun.

However, I my program never prayed more than 65,535 times in one run. Took me a while to figure that one out.....

  11. three mile island as well? on Debug your Code, or Else! · · Score: 1

One of my CS profs in college told us that the reason 3 mile island happened was because:

    - the control software for the plant was written in fortran
    - the temperature on one of the readouts came out ***** instead of a number (asterisks in a fortran program represent(ed) a number larger than your format statement will allow)
    - some engineer that didn't know that just said 'huh. look at the pretty asterisks' instead of following up on things.

....I had all of my old transformers up in my cube in my last job, and people would come in, hell bent on asking me some question.

They would see the giant pile of transformers, stop in the middle of what they were asking me, point at their favorite transformer, say "I remember THAT one!", and be gone for the 10 minutes as they played with all the transformers.

Often, they'd leave without asking me anything. They were great!

Personally, I think they will finally get us 37 years from now, when they see the first episode of 'Survivor', and finally make it a global effort to stop us.

I'm sorry....were you talking about Harry Potter here, or Star Wars?

I hated Phantom Menance - not just because it was a kid's movie, but because it forced me to realize, as a 28 year old, that the first three weren't amazing films in my mind because they were amazing films, but because I saw them when I was in grade school.

Attack of the Clones should refer to how Lucas recycled his own story ideas in Phantom Menace.

I will probably go see Ep. 2, but I will hate myself for doing it.

when they proclaim a genre is dead - the computer game biz moves in cycles that last years - look at ww2 flight sims. back in the day of the 80286 there were tons of them out there, lucasarts had their finest hour, secret weapons of the luftwaffe, plus there was aces over europe or somesuch, don't remember the name, maybe someone can recall. but then, there were no flight sims about ww2 out there for YEARS. during that time, everyone said "henny penny! henny penny! flight simgs are dead!" then, a year ago christmas, we had like three of them on the shelves. since then, nothing. but b17 is coming, and there are probably more i just don't recall.

just note which genres they say are dead and watch them for three years.
