  1. Ties into the RIAA and MPAA cases... on Supremes Hear Case of Publisher Piracy · · Score: 3

The free-lance writers only want more money for republishing their works, no matter what the content. Who can blame them? They see the RIAA complaining about mp3's and hearing about new CD's that don't allow copying. If you want another copy of that song you need to pay up!

The MPAA is harassing people over the DeCSS case, just because someone wanted to watch a DVD on their linux box. They don't want Europe to get a hold of a DVD before it is released now do they. Need to control those dollars!

Even the Book Publishers are screaming at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com for selling used books. Why? Their not getting any extra royalties.

So why wouldn't the freelance writers be next?
Wouldn't you be a little upset? I would. The freelance writers aren't complaining about making a backup of the info (much like making a copy of your DVD or CD), That's not the issue here. The issue is having the freelance writer bullied into signing their life away. Simply put their being told to either sign this contract that is retroactive to all of your work or you can not work for us ever again. Oh, and by the way, we're going to reproduce your work for profit. That's right more profit that the freelance writer is not benefiting from. This isn't making a copy for the library or for personal use. This is a big bullying company trying to make more profit off of the individual.

Just because I get the paper at home doesn't mean I'm entitled to automatically get the online version too. I've got to pay for that also. Why shouldn't the freelancers get paid twice also?

I mean that's why most of us hack code, for the challenge, we want to produce an outcome, but how do we get there.
So these guys like a different challenge and they exceeded at it. Fine. They won, and told the admins.

Why did they tell? They're not evil, nor are they geniuses. Chances are, if they got in through a hole so won't someone else. We would rather have hackers such as these dicovering the latest holes and patching them up instead of some script kiddie knocking down the whole system.

Music artists need to quit complaining about Napster and go after the record companys for hoarding so much of the revenues. On average the % that the music artists receive from royalties is small. Why go after Napster when there are bigger fish to fry.

Most people that I know, who use Napster, use it because they don't buy CD's anymore or are just plain sick of paying $15 - $20 for a CD, when they only want one song anyways.
The music industry needs a new way to market their CD's or drop the prices so the consumers will have a reason for PAYING.

  18. Re:don't blame Amazon for your own laziness on Amazon Refunding The Overcharge Experiment · · Score: 1

I did not word it correctly and I apoligize. What I meant to get across was the fact that this seems vaguely similar to price discrimination.

As you stated, someone could have a coupon to get $$$ off. But as we see here, this just is not the case. There is not coupon. Prices this time were dropped, I think, based on marketing information, probably not at random as they say. What happens if next time they are raised. Does that still count as "capitalism"? All Amazon has to do, if you complain because you found out, is that "oh, sorry, there must have been a glitch..." and they're sitting happy becuase there were thousands of customers who didn't catch the "glitch".

  19. Re:don't blame Amazon for your own laziness on Amazon Refunding The Overcharge Experiment · · Score: 1

    First of all

I do not and will not shop at Amazon, but that is just a personal bias.
Granted I do believe that this is just another prime example on how your personal privacy is being lost.
Not only, is it a loss of privacy but the "marketing" information is now being used to discriminate against you.
I think that Amazon is doing this refund in retrospect of bad press for sites like SlashDot.

    Second:

It's not just a simple case of being lazy. Granted Amazon doesn't give you a slogan stating the best price, but last I checked price descimination was illegal. You won't walk into a store and find out that the person in front of you got the computer for $1000 while you're being charged $2000.00

    Am I getting this correct?

Anyways, how many of the people here are ranting and raving about this only because of the issues this brings about?
Heck, I don't even own a DVD player yet, but my programming page has the source code, and has the programs. No letter yet...
I only care and only post the code because of what this says about the internet. The internet should be free. And free for anything! Sure there are a lot of site and things I don't agree with, but that is their right.

I've been using computers and the internet before it was called that and all we had was Gopher. I've seen many great advances and technology created by, for, and from the internet. Let's not have the pendulum swing the other way.
