Signal 11 fooled a lot of people who thought they were too smart for it. Too many brittle egos and narrow intelligences. This was quite an illuminating this to witness, and well...
This was even more profound. Thanks for reminding me why most of/. is a dull, pedantic exercise in preaching to the choir followed by the mutual fellatio. It has all the wit, verve, charm, and humor that makes life so very, very, worthwhile.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. The biggest problem with making death threats on/. is that some asshole will want to know 'gee, how do I make a Beowulf cluster of these dead guys'.
Also, a note about the link. Kill Ted Turner? I always thought he was a muppet anyways.
However, if an MPAA executive is found dead with a CueCat stuffed up his ass, they'll know where to look.
The exploitation of the poor by the rich is not tied to particular technology, of for that matter a particular epoch in time. Whether you can paraphrase "there are some things man was not meant to know" with a straight face is irrelevant to the underlying issues of colonialism actually involved.
The analogy you use to carnival games is faulty. Life is more like a mixture of Kriegspiel, chess, and a live jam. Advantage is morally shameful to those who don't have it. Of course people are selfish, and are sometimes cruel. I have mixed feelings about that, however...
This Frankestein-esque nonsense about accepting things as they are is simply too much to swallow.
Exactly. They'd rather have two *live* children than one dead child. It makes perfect sense to me, and I hope I'd have the same courage and honesty if I were in their situation.
I hear you. I watched this shit happen to both my mom and my stepfather.
Best as I can tell, when the economy is good there's always a shortage of people who are willing to be treated like shit.
Somewhere I hear the Red Queen screaming 'Off with their heads!', or possibly 'Kill 'em all, let God sort them out!'. Perhaps you just feel the need to vent your spleen (that's allowed on my world as well) but keep in mind that all governments are just immortal paper entities, as well.
You may not like certain aspects of human civilization, but our shared hallucination called society prevents us from using brute force instead. Due process INDEED, so to speak.
This is not a sig and I don't care who you're voting for.
Ah. I was mistaken. Perhaps the faster hardware is necessary only for the extreme compression Tom uses in his example. Hmm. I guess that means that I'll be able to use Divx on my K6-2 'poverty box' after all.:^)
Arguably, this may not be that big a contribution to piracy, because you need a fast processor and a lot of ram to decode the signal that well, shoot, it's cheaper to buy the dvds you want rather than assemble a Ghz box just to play them.
Think beyond the the storage media for a second: How about watching movies over a streaming broadband connection? The ability to archive film and video with unparalleled efficiency? It's time[jonkatz]to take the first tentative steps towards decommodifying video, just as mp3s have given us the chance to easily sample music we may never have otherwise heard.[/jonkatz] Yeah, a lot of people will get pissed off, and someone will get sued, but the possibilities are endless.
The FBI has a well-documented history of using misinformation and agent provocateurs to discredit and entrap organizations and individuals what they believe to be any sort of 'threat'.

That series was terrible after the first book.

That 'why-can't-we-all-get-along' ending was a new nadir as far as anything I ever bothered finishing.
When you finally saw the alien at the end of the movie, it looked like shit. It was just a guy in a rubber suit who looked like he should be manacing Tom Bakker, or maybe Godzilla.
"You are in black darkness. You have been hugga-muggered and caramshotted into a lawsuit which you know nothing about, or next to nothing about. You should not be in this war. You cannot win this war..." No, wait, some other desperate suit said this, not Valenti.:^)
They have sentiments. They just call them 'moral' to give the impression they have a greater objective weight than their taste in cars, clothing, or sexual partners.
btw, I'm not certain I really believe this, but I'm feeling cranky/amused and well, one can never have too many snotty aphorisms to share.

No matter how cool Linux is, it doesn't make the users any cooler.
Oh, that was just so *intense* of a thought.

Sorry, I don't recall the price. I don't think Amazon sells it, either.

Don't worry it'll get worse. Just wait for the slew of 'we should all just use Gimp anyhow' posts.

You know, this will probably be in a Neal Stephenson novel sometime in the next five years. ;^P

Yeah, about the time /. merges with the 'Weekly World News'. I see the headline 'END TIMES NEAR! STATUE OF NATALIE PORTMAN WEEPS HOT GRITS!'
