A series set in the early days of the Federation would let them put more limits on the tech. They might go as long as a month before introducing a new particle to us.
I always wondered what a tachyon was. Probably a gluon that isn't quite dry...
...but I doubt many slashdot'ers have uncompressed video lying around...
Do you have a video capture card (e.g. TV card)?
If so, you can generate yourself an AVI file, uncompressed if you're really mad, or compress it with something like PICvideo Motion JPEG or Indeo 5 Quick Compress.
If your Timeport has an IrDA infrared port (all the GSM900/1800/1900 ones available in the UK do) then you should be able to establish a connection using that in Linux. I frequently use it on my Timeport L7089 to go online when away from home. If you're wanting to do some SMS and Phone Book management you'll have to figure out what the commands are, since I haven't a clue...
actually, I just did make that choice for one of my sites, and decided agains IRC and for a smaller, easier to manage web-based chat system instead. Issues like this were a part of that decision, definitely. I just felt that running IRC, even non-connected, was setting things up for the twits to come in and start wiping their feet on the carpet.
Thought of running a MUSH-type server? These days they're pretty refined and the server codebases (e.g. MUX 2) are actively maintained.
I wish someone would tell Orange (www.orange.co.uk) about this. Maybe their flaky Flash animations work in Windows but they keep making Netscape in Linux fall over. I had to disable the plugin just to get at the roaming information page....
This is why there only being one value of PI and one type of Hydrogen has done us so badly...
There are three types of hydrogen... there's your ordinary hydrogen, there's deuterium (with one neutron) and there's tritium (with two neutrons) - the last of these is also radioactive.
L0pht, of all groups, is now going against full disclosure?
Not that I agree with this approach, but it's not like they're hiding anything. They are disclosing everything, but asking you to visit their site. For what gain I don't know since it's a plaintext file without any links, let alone any advertising...(which is of course a good thing)
I frequently glare at my local bus driver. He's often late, sometimes gets the route wrong and misses my destination, and on the return journey my stop is never in the same place twice.
So I have good reason to glare at my local bus driver.
Will plex86 be able to do more than 640x480 VGA graphics? 800x600 256 colours would be a good start....

.NET. I strongly suspect M$ has quite a shareholding in telephone companies who only offer metered access. Imagine having to sit ON the phone line running a remote app. Or worse... the phone line is a cellphone running at 9600bps. Can we say SLOW? And EXPENSIVE?
...however, if you're taking your mobile around Europe, then you get stuck with the "Roaming" fee!
You're not with Cellnet, are you? Look at Orange's rates (www.orange.co.uk/roaming) - My friends on Cellnet were being @$$raped while I got a fairly easy ride on Orange...
Get away from the cellular nightmare which is the USA. Go somewhere with GSM. Where I am I spend about $30/month and it covers all of my needs. I also have the ability to receive phone calls when I am travelling in Asia, Europe, almost every part of the world.
Except the USA:(
The Motorola L7089 or P7389 phones are tri-band GSM and will work anywhere in the world where there is GSM coverage (and your home network has a roaming agreement). My home network is Orange UK and I used my phone successfully in the USA.
Sheesh. I was just making a joke...
We all know that was a tribble, rescued from K-7.

And when they do, since you have ALREADY paid the royalties, you can then do pretty much what you like - since it HAS been paid for.
And, since it has been paid for, it is no longer piracy.
Syzyg, why would you want a 2000 quid credit card if your income is a mere 6000 quid?

My GOD! ... It's full of GEEKS!
Despite all the advances in medical science and technology, the human mortality rate remains fixed at 100%.

Software sucks? I've yet to find a driver for my Dyson bagless vacuum cleaner...
So I have good reason to glare at my local bus driver.

Six years, is that all? Acorn's Risc OS system was doing it in 1988. (IIRC its predecessor Arthur was also doing it in 1987.)
What has that got to do with shellfish?
Lev 20:20: If a man sleeps with his aunt, he has dishonored his uncle. They will be held responsible; they will die childless.
What does THAT have to do with vision or approaching altars?
The word piss can be found several times in the Old Testament of the King James Bible.
Anyway, what a waste sending it into the Pacific Ocean. Far more entertaining (and worthwhile) to crash it into the Millennium Dome in London!
Oh well. The Russians want to sink the Mir into the Pacific Ocean.
Why couldn't they have targeted the Millennium Dome instead?!
