it's 2010 and we have netflix with it's so so instant streaming. along with a few other buy/rent online stores that offer content at decent prices. we even have blu ray's coming out with a digital copy so you can watch it on your phone, ipad, laptop without an optical drive, etc.

it's not the ideal where any blu ray or DVD should come with a digital copy and iTunes is not the greatest place to buy/rent from but they are all good enough not to steal with the excuse that the media companies aren't offering an easy way to consume media. only excuse you may have is that you're outside the USA and want US content

point is that two guys in a garage will take a risk and create something revolutionary like youtube or facebook or a personal computer. their risk is their time and a little money they might lose.

large companies will have Oracle Financials and other software to model risk and there will be endless meetings about a new product, evolving feature sets, etc. Sony had some cool stuff in the 1990's in the labs except the media guys would cry piracy and the top management killed or crippled every single potential product that seemed cool. Microsoft, Apple and Google didn't invent any of the ideas in their top products. they weren't even the first ones to make a product. they copied from someone else and got it right. or they buy them out. Apple didn't make up multi-touch, they bought a company in 2005. i heard Google bought the companies that made up google voice and android

this goes back years. Microsoft used to do the same thing. they would visit a company, see a product, decline to buy it and then it would come up in the next version of WIndows. lately i see that Windows has a lot of third party licensed software. Apple is buying up small companies and last week there was news how Apple stopped doing business with a design firm that showed off an ipad lookalike. apple pays others to design products or parts of them.

big companies with herds of MBA's take years to do anything and then it's so bad no one wants to use it. a few guys in a garage always innovate. look at YouTube, Facebook and all the current big names. AOL had a video service years ago and they used the actor from married with children to advertise it on TV. shockingly it died.

farmville is not that different than most RPGs except its freemium. most RPG's the game play is very repetitive with minor rewards along the way. farmville is free to start and you pay if you want the rewards faster.

too late for that once apple blinked on the dev kit thing

iphones and android phones are almost identical right now with 80% or more functionality being the same. unlike the early computer era when everyone seemed to use different CPU's

android and iphone both use ARM CPU's
the OS is ^nix in both cases
almost all of the top apps are available on each platform

big differences are the form factor with android coming in different form factors.
iOS is still better for games
and you need a computer to run iTunes if you have an iPhone where Android phones are stand alone phones

in both cases they still command a premium for businesses selling them, but in the next year or two i think margins will start falling just like with PC's around 2000. if you look at the teardowns this year there is a lot more integration which means it will be easier to manufacture and source the parts

up until the iphone 3GS it was a mess in there with chips and wires everywhere. iphone 4 looks a lot cleaner with almost everything integrated on one circuit board. and with android being open source expect to see tier b phones pop up where some company takes the code, puts it into a cheap phone with no new featues and sells it on metro PCS or boost mobile for $50 a month talk, text, email and web

the store part is a web browser with a slightly different GUI than other web browsers. even on my iphone, which is how they added Ping to it without me upgrading to the latest firmware. i'm still on 4.0.

the local storage part is either xml files or a sqllite database. that's the slow part unless you have a new computer with lots of RAM

the problem is not building a new iTunes, that's easy. it's migrating the existing data over. the big challenge will be to migrate the existing data seamlessly during an upgrade, which will probably cost too much money to code so apple won't do it since there is no return on investment and no viable competitor. we will just have to wait for a technological evolution

Ping is a major fail so far. no facebook because apple tried to bully them and got told to go away. no twitter integration.
Ping doesn't even have an auto scan of gmail and other email account address books. who is going to manually try all their contacts?
no artists. i think there are only 20 or so on there
    spammers have taken over
everything is geared to make you buy something, no real social networking
people on macrumors have figured out that a lot of content comes from Tumblr and is not even original
a lot of artist postings seem fake and like they were done in some call center. some celeb tweets are like this, but compare Lady Gaga's twitter feed and Ping feed. the twitter feed seems like it's really her

either this is a public beta or this will die in a few months like digital LP. Apple wants to hoard cash and maintain profit margins at the expense of hiring enough people to code these things to completion. there were stories earlier this year how developers at apple are always changing projects depending on what is priority. also explains why some things like an iPad OS update are so far behind schedule

one shocking thing i learned on the Pong of social networking sites this morning. Lady Gaga like Iron Maiden and Faith no More.
