also includes apt as an option. But the default is to use the excellent urpmi urpme tools that automatically resolve all RPM dependencies and can install new packages automagically (from the CD or remotely through FTP or HTTP) and also uninstall them.
You base your opinion on a one-shot event, that's ridiculous. You Americans tend to think we are undevelopped country. Come on, please visit us really. See the international figures about economy as well. See our social advance, see our advance in respect of human rights, see our advance in health. Come on, please know us before bashing us. By the way, do you know Concorde? do you know Airbus? do you know ArianeSpace? Please also stop to consider us as French only. I'm European. My culture is European and more and more I can realize that it's different than American. Once again, thank you for WWII. But we won't ever follow you guys.
Please look at yourself, American, before bashing other country residents. Everytime you write that you prove American arrogancy, and everytime I read that I like America less.
I have spent the entire week in a recording studio using Protools on a Mac and I can tell you that trashing 3 hours of work just because of MacOS repetiting crashes is not exactly what I can call a great choice for professional audio.
If you want to support Mandrakesoft, you'd better order your pack on MandrakeStore. Why? In traditionnal distribution channels, the final reseller (the shop) and the distributor (MacMillan?) take a big margin (traditionnally the two cumulated margins can be as high as 65% of the final price). On MandrakeStore, it seems that MandrakeSoft sells directly to the consumers, so it's very likely that they earn much money through MandrakeStore than from the traditional shelves. My 2 cents.
I don't understand why this interview has been posted on Slashdot. There is really nothing much to eat here. No news or old news. Am I alone to think that way?
I knew BeOS long time before Linux. So if after years of existence BeOS is not yet a mainstream OS, I don't see why I shouldn't call it a "niche OS"! AtheOS on the other part, is likely to become a mainstream. If only it could come with many more supported videocards...
In that case I guess Mandrake is going to become very rich very soon!
More details about the release...

Mandrake 8.1 Released
·
· Score: 5, Informative
Mandrake 8.1 is called "Vitamin". It comes with a bunch of new features such as MandrakeFirstTime that lets users centralize their Internet parameters and subscribe to the new MandrakeOnlineServices (personalized updates advisories, depending on your system). Also this is AFAIK the first Linux distro to offer the journalized file-systems XFS, Ext3, ReiserFS at the same time! Last but not the least it offers the beautiful KDE 2.2.1 (with antialiasing in standard) and GNOME 1.4.1. While the previous releases were very oriented to end-users, this new one offers excellent features for server use.
...PLEASE do not think that only open-source collaborative projects are good! The quality of a software is the software itself and the associated license (choosing a good open-source license is essential). I think that big open-source projects *have to* be open to external contributors because one man can't do everything. But having a good coder for one small open-source project is sometimes better than having several students in software engineering too much self-confident. Also the fact that it's open-source software guarantees the possibility to fork when people are unhappy with the maintainer.
It's terrible to read such a shit. I don't have anything to respond to that but Mandrake is number 1 Linux distro in retail in the US. SuSE is number 3 or number 4.
between SuSE and Mandrakesoft! In a similar situation, Mandrakesoft has been bought (20%) by its community of users and is now traded on a European market. SuSE is more and more locked by rather proprietary companies. I wish them good luck!!!
man urpmi
Did you try Mandrake? man urpmi

"Enigma" - wasn't it the name of this German machine that was used to encrypt secret messages during WWII ?
I'd love to read a comparison between these two famous Linux distros: features, stability, ergonomy... That would be interesting!
Very funny. There is an autosave function in Protools, just for your information.

Had to recall that, just for history

"enfoncer des portes ouvertes"
...Mandrake Linux 8.1 Release Candidate with exceptional features . [off topic etc. I know but I just wanted people to know cos it's important]

WindowsXP Vs. Linux Mandrake: Some Aesthetic Observations is the title of this excellent article that I recommand to read.
The truth is very different than you think. Also you have a nationalistic vision of France/Germany while now you'll have to think "Europe".

There are thousand cases of Linux uses in corporates (large and smaller ones as well) on MandrakeBizCases.com. Worth a look.
France as well.
SuSE is not big in Europe. SuSE is big in Germany _only_.

"And Red Hat, Debian, Mandrake etc. don't feature proprietary configuration tools?"
Absolutely not - that's a big difference.
