No it wasn't. I've also tried a bunch of power supplies, some even with 2A output. Also experimented with two powered USB hubs.

    "This is pure misinformation"

No, it's not. Just google "raspberry pi ethernet" or "raspberry pi usb".

I've tried about a dozen keyboards on mine, most didn't work, the others randomly repeated keystrokes. This was from $5 nonames to Logitech and Microsoft high end keyboards. I also tried it through powered usb hubs, and I even pulled out the soldering iron and bridged the on board fuse. Which helped some, after that I could use a GE keyboard with key repeats only happening once or twice a minute. But that would still be unusable for programming. The USB issue is just bad engineering. 150ma is not gonna cut it.

You might say I got a bad board. But I doubt it, seeing all the posts about the same issues on the internet. Maybe you got a lucky one.

    "buy something more powerful"

I did. I sold my rpi, and got an mk802. It's much faster (actually runs Xorg at decent speed), has a lot more memory, onboard storage and works with all the keyboards/mice the rpi didn't. It also has wifi that doesn't drop out. It's even has a case, and is smaller. And when you add this all up, even cheaper than the rpi.

    "No hard push advertising required!"

So you don't get the at least once a week slashvertisement, the front page el reg articles, and raspberry pi coming from just about every faucet on the internet?

It was not only advertised, but falsely advertised all over the place. An educational tool. All you need is a keyboard, monitor, power supply. Run scratch, learn programming. It's for the good of our children.

What they didn't tell you was that the USB doesn't work with most of keyboards and mice (I tried about 10 keyboards on mine, some worked better than the other, but none perfectly). They didn't tell you that scratch. while it opens, it's so slow that it's unusable. In fact running an Xorg environment on it is so slow, the only way to use it is as a terminal. Remote terminal because keyboards don't work. Oh, wait. Forgot that the ethernet port drops out all the time also. All well known and documented design issues.

Then the "botched" launch. Or so we thought. Where "the servers went down" and "sold out in minutes". It was all a ploy. Like the "product leaks" and those lines around the Apple stores (well, to Apple's credit, at least their hardware works.).

Wonder how much of those broken million devices are actually used instead of gathering dust. While the "foundation" is shamelessly laughing all the way to the bank. For the good of our children. The scam of our lifetime.

True, electronics are much more durable. Although I haven't had any computer hardware fail in the past decade, other than maybe a mouse.

But it also depends on what you use computers for. Browsing the web, updating facebook profiles, some word documents, a PC from 5 years ago does the job great. I also have some older computers, a 10 year old one drives my cnc router, and I have two Atom based servers that are a couple years old.

However my work desktop and laptop, used for compiling large chunks of code, photoshop and cad are upgraded every 12-18 months. Processors and graphics cards do get faster. If I were using a 5 year old computer, what compiles on the i7 with ssd in a minute, would probably take an hour. That's a lot of bang for the buck. For the desktop I just replace the motherboard/cpu/gpu, laptops are new purchases with the old ones going to craigslist.

I didn't obliterate metro. I just don't use it on my laptop, but I see its potential on tablets and touch screen laptops (which mine is not, because I had to have non glossy screen for coding).

My next computer purchase will be a tablet for my daughter who loves to draw and paint. It will be a win8 tablet with pressure sensitive stylus, and that's where win8 wins (no pun intended): it's the same OS running on non touch and touch screen devices. You can use the same programs, not just some feature deprived 99 cent crap from an app store. With a real stylus none the less, the lack of which is a major fail of the idevices and most androids.

Metro is the bridge between touch screen and non touch screen. Best implementation? No. Just like the idevice launch screen and one button interface isn't either. But here's what Microsoft did for you: it gave you the same OS for both, without stripping out the power of desktop programs. How would you have done better?

Stop this please. You don't need any addons to make win8 work in desktop mode. You don't need to use any of the metro apps either.

My laptop has win8, I only use it in desktop mode and works just like win7 did. All win7 programs work the same way. In fact it's nice to have the extra space from removing the start button on the taskbar. The only difference is that you get a full screen "start menu" when you hit the windows key. You can still type the name of the app or document just like in the star menu in win7. When it comes up, just hit enter to launch it. Same as win7.

I read reviews and scare mongering like your post, and was scared of win8 when when it arrived with my new laptop. But it's all unfounded sillyness. Win8 looks better and is faster than win7 and works in desktop mode just like win7 did.

Exactly. And what I was hinting at is using Windows vs OSX vs Linux doesn't make a difference. There is obviously more social engineering malware for Windows because that's what most people use so it's the biggest bang for the buck. With macs gaining user base, there's malware cropping up there, too. If you count Android as linux, plenty malware to choose from. But if you want to get on a company's intranet, the LAMP stack on a poorly maintained linux server (read: most linux servers) is the ticket.

And what's the first thing an average user does after installing Ubuntu? /etc/sudoers ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL. All of a sudden using Win8 with MS' anti virus and auto software update doesn't look like a bad option at all.
