  1. Re:Hmmm. on Rent A Downloadable Movie · · Score: 1

Theres nothing too wrong with it.
You know what you're getting when you pay for it just as much as you do when you rent a movie elsewhere.
Ever rented a movie and never got around to watching it? The 30 days should be a significant advantage in dealing with that.
And lastly it isn't as if it were replacing anything... it seems to be an additional service with which people can access movies.
I probably won't be using it. You probably won't be using it. But is there anything wrong with it being offered?!?

  2. Hmm on Rent A Downloadable Movie · · Score: 1

    Nice idea from their perspective.
Its not like the encryption they use will be worth cracking. As soon as it is cracked they can change it and at best users can get a few copies of movies they didn't pay for... but that won't be so much of an issue at all if they change it regularly.
What I would be interested in is how they plan to make it work. If each movie is 500 MB and all this is official... (assuming official == more users) they're going to need LOTS of bandwidth.
I wonder whether this will be cost effective? Perhaps it is merely an attempt to reduce piracy of movies rather than actually making profit.
Or will AOL Time Warner be large enough to make sure that most of the bandwidth is free?

At $1200, I wonder if even Bill Gates would bother getting one of these shitty X-Boxes. The games are by far worse than any other console. It got totally slammed by the press at the last E3.
Most hardcore gamers think the X-Box will turn out to be a poor console. So are Microsoft really expecting "casual gamers" to fork out $1200 for a console?
It seems Microsoft is approximately one target audience short of a commercially successful console.

After taking that into account... what do they hope to achieve? Its unlikely that he has much money that anyone can sue him for... so they just want to keep a prisoner, basically?
What if Russia arrested and held an American for breaking a Russian law whilst in America?!? I bet there'd be a helluva lot of demands going on by the US.
The US seems to have a lot of double standards in terms of what it expects from other countries contrasted with what it allows other countries.
The DMCA is only part of the deal.

IM programs also are a huge source of distraction for me... people come online, people go offline and messages are sent and recieved. I have started getting into the habit of closing them before starting any work.

Indrema was going to be an open-source console before the project died... but now it seems the PS2 has taken its place! Quite unexpected.
This could also end up being an excellent thing for Linux in general. Developers may be inclined to use SDL for their games and applications due to its portability factor. SDL makes porting from platform to platform very easy. It would be pretty hard to lose any portability without making it a concious decision.
The only drawback I see here is that there probably isn't any OpenGL distribution for PS2... (I'd love for someone to correct me on that??) so developers will probably be stuck with SDL's rasterizer.
This is still a major step forward though.
