Pick up a cross-platform language. Something that can be applied in both Microsoft's OS's AND Linux and hopefully other OS's too. Languages that come immediately to mind would be C/C++ and Java.

I've been using C/C++ for the past few years (self-taught) and now I've started VB in school.
    It pales in comparison.
The syntax for a start is simply horrible. It doesn't use any curly brackets to indicate where loops or 'if' statements start and end. Instead it uses "then" and "endif". Tedious to type and also horrible to read.
It tries error-checking and fixing on its own. No more warnings when you fail to initialize a variable... VB does it for you! All variables default to 0. If that's not encouraging bad programming practices, I don't know what is!
VB is pretty much "Programming for dummies". Unfortunately its pretty popular amongst many companies.

  8. Marginal increase... on GeForce3 and Linux · · Score: 4

I'd argue that the reason why the performance is only marginally better is due to the Linux drivers probably being VERY early drivers.
On Windows (which has the more developed drivers at this point in time, since NVidia would have that ranked as a priority) at 1600 * 1200 the GeForce 3 has a healthy increase over any previous video cards, whereas in this benchmark the performance is actually worse as the resolution increases! (Windows benchmarks of the GeForce 3 are the inverse of this)
Give NVidia some time and then benchmark the GeForce 3 on Linux, the performance increase should be a nice gap.
Also notice the distinct lack of details about the benchmark... the only details given are the system specs, so I would be inclined to question how valid the results really are.

If things were done with subscriptions, MS could halt renewal of subscriptions for Windows 95 and then force everyone into 98/ME.

Sure, here is the list of X-Box developers, as you can see there is well over 100.

The list of 3rd party developers for Gamecube can be found here. I think you mis-interpreted what I was saying about the GameCube (or I didn't express it well enough). Whilst the GameCube will DEFINATELY have AWESOME games which I and I'm sure many many other people can't wait to play, it will lack a surge of games which is what seemed to put the PS1 ahead of the N64 at the time. Whilst alot of the PS1 games were crap you have to understand that the average gamer is not even hardcore enough to recognise the quality of a game often and therefore choose quantity over quality.

The PS2 is getting a new model with a HD in Japan this week and it will also be sold as an addon at an unspecified later date.
My main point was that X-Box would recieve better sales due to the sheer number of developers compared to other consoles, innovative or not.

  14. Re:MS can release whenever they like... TROLL on No X Box for Xmas? · · Score: 1

I apoligize for my statement on PS2's... it seems that the general opinion is they are still selling in large numbers. I based my original statement on the fact that where I live (Sydney, Australia) there were plenty on the shelves at launch date which people pretty much ignored as well as articles which have been posted on the internet (some, even on Slashdot... perhaps I should have used some salt). The X-Box titles?? Several have been announced and I would estimate that the number of nameless titles which have been announce would be well into double-digits. The X-Box actually has been demonstrated in real time by some guys at Bungie. They played Halo on the actual X-Box (controller and everything) for an audience and a long video of this is available on the internet.

You pop the disc in and it plays... to the user it shouldn't be very different from any other console unless MS screw up and it crashes.
But really, its a console... a fixed platform, as long as a developer thoroughly tests their game crashes (if any) should be VERY rare.

  17. MS can release whenever they like... on No X Box for Xmas? · · Score: 2

    Consider this:
    - PS2 was a big disappointment everywhere in the world... it is not likely to pose a large threat or gain much more ground.
    - MS have well over 100 developers developing games for X-Box, theres gonna be a flood of games (like the PS1) and most likely they'll all be of an unprecedented quality as far as console systems go.
    - Nintendo have somewhere in the vicinity of 20 developers for GameCube, which pales in comparison to Microsoft's hundereds.

The Playstation 2 doesn't pose a threat to MS... when you look at the difference in graphics quality it is clear the X-Box is almost a full generation ahead of the PS2. What MS do want to be careful about however is the GameCube. Nintendo have been working on the GameCube alot longer than any other console thats due out and Nintendo are usually capable of delivering at least decent launch titles. As long as MS doesn't get the X-Box out too far after GameCube's launch they can really release whenever they like. It would probably even be best for MS to coincide with GameCube's release since the two machines will be side-by-side, and in comparison the X-Box ought to look technically superior.

  20. Game advertising could be a BIG thing! on In-Game Advertising Comes of Age · · Score: 2

    - Piracy is on the rise, or at least remaining very high. As internet connections become faster it is also becoming easier to download games off the internet.

    - Game advertising does not have to subtract from the game and if used intelligently can add to the game!

    - If your income depends solely on advertising, you no longer need a distributer or publisher... no more middle-men.

The big problem with the model of having advertising as part of game content from which you recieve your sole income is that your audience is LIMITED. At first glance it would seem that you'd actually reach a wider audience by giving away your game for free however what people fail to realize is that only the "hardcore" (I use that term loosely in this context) gamers would actually visit the website and download an entire game.
The other problem is that since there is no publisher any advertising for the game is the developer's responsibility.

Ultimately though, when I play a game and I see a billboard, I'd much rather see a Coke ad on it as opposed to a made up Cola.
