    I live in Minneapolis and go to Minneapolis Southwest High School (where the paper's article is from, too). What you said is already happening without these new snow plows. A few years ago, we got 1-2 snow days off a year. Now (10th grade) we haven't had a snow day in 3 years I think. 3 years ago the govenor, not Jesse Ventura, but the one before him (Arne Carlson) was nice and gave the day off because it was like -40 F. But we haven't had a day off for snow since 6th grade. It might be because they have more snowplows or a more efficient system or something... I'm not sure. The annoying thing about these is that they plow all the busy streets, but leave these huge piles of snow at intersections that you get your car stuck in. It also used to suck walking down sidewalks because those were buried. But then I got some $70 military boots and it doesn't even matter now.

    Anyways, these will probably eliminate those annoying snow piles on non-snow route streets. I hope Minneapolis gets a system like that guy said they have in Holland... potholes are so annoying. Slush, those plow snow piles, and potholes are the most annoying things about winter driving. Oh, and getting that salt on your car in annoying too. So in conclusion, winter sucks.

    Not a chance, my dear sir. The government can't be concerned any longer with out-moded penalogical theories. Soon we may be needing all of out prison space for political offenders. Common criminals like these are best dealt with on a purely curative basis. Kill the criminal reflex, that's all. Full implementation in a years time. Punishment means nothing to them, you can see that. They enjoy their so-called punishment.

    When I went to Cozumel (a Mexican island off the coast of Cancun) on vacation, I took a ferry I think about 2 km to the mainland. Without Dramamine, I got seasick and vomited just before we docked. I realize that this ferry was much smaller than the boat in the article, would going across the ocean at this speed without Dramamine cause seasickness? Also, would it create large waves in its wake? BTW, I got some Dramamine for the way back... and it turned out fine (but it was tough reading the directions on how to take it in Spanish).

    Ok, I'm done with that. But if you think that's unfair, then those male generalizations are unfair, too. I mean, they obviously aren't going to have the wrasslin' beer swilling types of folks, and they aren't going to have those women I described. The current astonauts they have work fine.

    saving $3m isn't so much compared to the (guessing) $700m for a shuttle mission. Also, where did you get that 100 lbs average for female astronauts? That sounds kind of low. (And possibly unhealthy depending on their height).

    Don't forget the horrible spirt-crushing rules! Yesterday, the school (Minneapolis Southwest) was so COLD. I was shivering and getting sick because the furnance wasn't on high enough. That's pretty bad in itself. BUT here's the worst part: I tried to wear a coat. Guess what: the school doesn't allow one to wear coats inside the school. I tried wearing a hat and since that was against the rules too. The reason was that they were trying to battle gang violence. Is disallowing hats/coats really going to help anything AT ALL? You'd think only a few of the crazy authoritarian teachers would uphold the rule. But no - One teacher would ask me to take it off, I'd beg that I was FREEZING while wearing 4 shirts. But they'd say "You're arguing with the wrong person. I don't make the rules. Go to the office (and get suspended) or take it off." So I'd take it off and put it back o when I was out of their sight. But only a few seconds later, ANOTHER tacher would ask me. The cycle continued until I gave up and got sick. I mean, that's just what chickenshit teachers with no backbone say to dump it on someone else. I'm being difficult. They're only trying to stop gang violence - hats can be used in gang identification. You don't want gangs, do you?

    First, children do not have the same rights as adults. Even if we did have rights to privacy (we don't, it's only implied by 'illegal search and seizure'), that right would not be granted to children, or at least, it would be proxied through their parents or guardians.

    I've always had a question about this. Since the 14th Amendment states (quoting my history book): 1. All persons born and naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State in which they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the priveleges or immunities of citizens of the United States; not shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of its laws.
    (Now I'm just summarizing the other sections)
    2. Representatives are given in proportion to population of all people. If the number of males over 21 eligible to vote are denied suffrage, then the respresentation drops proportionally.
    3. No one may be a Senator/ Representative/ Elector or any other civil or military office who having taken an oath to support the Constitution who have engaged in rebellion against the US, unless Congress removes the disability by a 2/3 vote.
    4. The US recognizes the validity of US debts for services in suppressing rebellion. The US nor any State may pay a debt made while in rebellion.
    5. Congress may enforce these provisions this by appropriate legislation

    So, in the 1st Section, it says the rights of all citizens born in the US enjoy the rights of others. There is no amendment about the lack of some rights for those less than 16, 18, 21, or whatever. So, how can many of these rights be nonexistent for teenagers and children? Voting rights, military service rights, and the right to serve in government are the only ones that appear to be removed. I realize this is a bit OT, but I've always wondered...

    To clarify, when Communism is capitalised, it typically refers to The Party. But I do agree with everything. Capitialists need only look at Cuba. Also, I believe in the principles on Menshveism. Bolshevism relies on extreme nationalism. Menshevism is if the Liberals ran it. (I know many liberals abhorr communism, but just imagine those who support communism).

    Remember Sputnik? I don't think that was stolen from the west. And just because the Soviets failed does not mean communism did. Don't get me wrong, the CCCP (or USSR) certainly had many faults and corruptness. The Soviet Union fell behind the US, but Russia has got horrible conditions now too. Just because Bolshevism failed does not mean so for Menshevism and other socialisms. Cuba has many benefits, and it has prospered since the 1950's, when it was run by American corperate dicatorship.

I mean, really... if they made a new (Improved!) one of the Omnibot, that would be cool.

    I'm a drummer for a local band to Minneapolis called Hed Kase. You can catch us next at 44th & Upton February 3rd in Minneapolis... cover charge is $5. Satisfied? My point is that something that EVERYONE uses (most everybody sings Happy Birthday at home, at work, we sing it at school) should not be so privatized.

    I think this is why in movies at birthday parties the kids always sing "For he's a jolly good fellow" instead of "Happy Birthday". I always wondered why they sang that, because REAL kids don't sing that. Like 2 weeks ago I learned "Happy Birthday" was still copyrighted and "For He's a Jolly Fellow" was not so they save money by using the free one. There are 2 old ladies in Cleveland who wrote it and they get royalties or something like that. These copyright laws really need to be reviewed... maybe 5 to 25 years or something... Or maybe they become public domain when the guy stops making music or something.

    Actually, isn't this what l0pht was talking about when they said they could cripple the whole Internet in 30 minutes (or whatever time it was tht they said)? Attack the main DNS servers/whatever, and it would be diffucult to visit most sites? I always wondered why no one did that... maybe it's going to start.

    Also, mod up the guy who shows the website. Quite informative... it was indeed a DoS.

    I had always imagined using the random method described, just like brute forcing it. But I get no karma, and no one noticed. =( Anyways, to get to my question here, exactly where does one find out extensively how SDMI works? In the article, they talk about knowing A LOT about how it works, but I can never find anything much more descriptive than a newbie FAQ in general. Thanks.

    I know, there are other reasons, but this might be another reason why no one is buying these. So many restrictions on the HDTVs... it seems almost pointless. Can't watch broadcast... can't watch cable now... DVDs are about the only thing they're good for, and I bet the MPAA is going to lobby for some wacky restriction (have they not already... actually, I'd bet they have). More and more, every day, I want to live in Holland... too bad I don't speak Dutch. I hope most speak English. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

    One poster has said that people will never buy it then. But, I am afraid they still will. That's what people said about bad TOS, DVDs, etc. But most people don't care, and make up enough of their market. I saw some Slashdotter say in a post a day or two ago that: "If you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump right out. But if you put it in cold water and heat it, the frog will say there until it dies." That is so true about the general American public. Anyone who complains, boycotts, or dislikes something like this is branded as "crazy" or "paranoid", and most people will just ignore them. It's sad but I'm afraid it is true.

    This is the major news story about school and murder maybe in the past 10 years. I think it's a bit overblown. About 25 people (not sure exactly how many) died last year as a result of school shootings. I think TIME did a "special report" on every one of them. About 22000 murders (again, not exact) were committed last year. It is rediculous to make such a big deal over this. But fear makes for good news. Are your kids safe? Who's going to kill them? How can you prevent it?

    On the aniversary of Columbine last year, my moron math teacher (not actually a teacher, he never got a teaching degree. He was a carpenter teaching Geometry.) Got us all together, and told us the story. He showed us their pictures and he said "It could be anyone." If you're having problems, you can always talk to me about it. If you think anyone is having social problems, you can talk to me. Now, I'm in the "punk" group, and my friends were making fun of him (quietly) because he looked ridiculous. He freaked out and said "Guys, I'm serious." And we said that this was the least of our troubles/problems and he went on a yelling tirade... it wouldn't end.

    Some of you don't know how bad school has gotten. The school outlaws HATS, HEADBANDS, COATS, and a bunch of other stuff from being worn in school (a PUBLIC school!) It supposedly is to prevent gangs, because they cause violence. So hats/coats/headbands cause violence. Think about it. "I guess we can't have a gang anymore because we can't wear hats, and that just takes the fun out of it. I actually got sick and had to wear a coat because the school doesn't heat enough, plus I was cold from being sick. They made me take it off, and so I got sicker and missed more school. I wonder if the suspension from not taking it off would have lasted longer than the sickness. It would at least have been more pleasant. I better stop here before I get anymore pissed off and get bad karma for flamebait and start a flame war. But school really sucks.

    Why is the Nazi empire so commonly referred to as the 3rd Reich? That's what the Nazis called it from the beginning because the empire was to be the 3rd empire to last over 1000 years. It, of course, lasted about 12 years. The other two were the Roman Empire and something else I can't remember, maybe China or Greece or something. If it didn't last for 1000 years, why is it still referred to as the 3rd Reich?

Then why outlaw virtual child porn? Should we outlaw all porn because we can't tell the age of the person in the picture and therefore can't tell whether or not the person in the picture is underage.
