On an aside, I didn't think there was any violation to the GPL that could stop you from being able to use Linux. A GPL violation would make you lose your right to distribute it, right?
By violating the GPL, you invalidate your license. Considering that the code is only offered under the GPL, if you invalidate your license, then you have no permission to use it at all. Distribute, or use, because you just simply don't have a license anymore.
Mere use of Linux by a company cannot ever be a violation of the GPLv2 that Linux is licensed under.
It can if you violated the GPL, and thus made your license void. That's what TFA is talking about.
All the comments are wildly confusing, and go figure, the summary sucks, but TFA makes it clear that for a public company violation of the GPL invalidates their license, and makes the issue not just copyright infringement, but a securities violation.
This wouldn't be any different than saying "by installing one copy of Windows on two separate machines you break your license, and thus it becomes a securities violation."
Silly argument. It's not a question of grammar, but of whether you consider a company to be a single entity or a collection.
You limit your definition of grammar to only include things that perscriptionists complain about? What about "I washed myself the hair"? Would you say that that's grammatically incorrect English, or just a confused sentence.
The fundamental choice in this is that Commonwealth English considers a company to be a collection, while American English considers companies to be single entities. This is a grammatical point.
And oft times a perscriptionist for one will complain about text written by the other, saying that it is either poorly written, or a grammatical mistake. Either way, who is correct for slashdot? Who are we to decide that one way is better than the other and "correct" every submission to that grammatical choice?
Again, in case you're stupid, the classification of companies as collections rather than single entities is a grammatical point. If you insist on claiming different, I'd like to know what kind of rule it is otherwise.
In addition, bad spelling and grammer shows a lack of self-respect. You cant be bothered to perfect that art which you purport to undertake? Why even bother in the first place then? Oh, right, you are getting paid. Not taking that time says to me that you have no respect for what you are doing and for the work you are completing. Therein lies the tragedy.
Some of us are not native English speakers. Likewise, some of use have been educated about foreign languages with more consistent spelling rules. I've not had a requirement to pay attention to my English spelling for a very long time. I was an above average speller when I was in grade school, and perhaps even into High School.
During High School, I picked up German, with its much more consistent spelling rules. (Even when they changed right in the middle of me initially learning the language, they just became "more" consistent.) The problem now is that with the tendency of English to reduce unstressed vowels, I've lost a great degree of my spelling. I didn't know there were anything wrong with "definately" until someone pointed it out, neither am I certain of the spellings of "consistent" nor "tendency".
If English literature is not your primary source of entertainment, your English spelling will suffer, and this is true by and in large for the vast number of people in the world.
This also does not address the difference between Commonwealth English and American English. American English speakers will get tripped up over "Apple are thinking of introducing a new iMac." while Commonwealth English speakers will get tripped up over "Apple is thinking of introducing a new iMac." Which are we to use? Because they are both opposing, and we can only select one. We will piss of one group of perscriptionists, it's guarenteed.
Purely out of curiosity: would you have agreed with his action if he did that with someone who was in fact German, or who was against the war?
No, because he still failed to assertain even that much. If he had gotten in an argument with someone in the guild (even if it where me) about the war, and found himself to have a few that was just so annoyed with that other person's opinion, then that would have been at least reasonable.
His immediate actions without further justificiation than "I'm using the German client", shows a stereotype, and an irrational knee-jerk reaction. Yeah, I may have supported the Iraqi invasion based on the evidence I was presented (which was incorrect), but at least the evidence supported an invasion. If this guy had used the same decision making process to justify the invasion himself, then it bothers me that such a decision making process is simply, "whatever my government does is justified."
That worries me. It's an entirely different thing to be lied to and believe it, than to be lied to, not even care, because the other person is automatically justified.
Actually, the biggest single hardware reason isn't the processor but the bus speed.
ACTUALLY, the biggest single difference is from single processor to dual processor. And G4->Intel Core Duo is going to be a good increase in the first place.
Why is everyone all "OMG, the iMac Intel is it's 2~3x faster than the iMac G5, how'd they do that?" Seriously, the G5 in the iMac G5 isn't much slower than a single iMac Intel chip... you just get two of them instead of one.
Now, imagine them replacing the PowerMacs saying "It's upto 1.5x faster than the previous models!" Yeah, no wonder they upgraded the iMac first.
Three reasons, 1.) I was unable to join the military for 2 years after 9/11. This condition would have been met even during a draft. 2.) in order to join now, I have to gain weight, that I just cannot seem to gain. and finally 3.) I require a waiver to join due to an earlier discharge that was uncharacterized, and requires a waiver for re-enlistment. This would take about a month to get, even while expidited, which can only be sought once I meet all other requirements for joining the military. See point #2.
Was the "evidence" faked? Yes, the Iraq attempted Niger buy documents were faked. The US is very uninterested in determining who faked the docs. Things that make you wonder.
I don't argue that at least some of the evidence were faked. But some of it were not faked. There exists evidence that shows that Saddam himself may have thought he had weapons of mass distruction, or at least acted as such in order to posture.
I meant "support the war" the same way the bigotted idiot meant "support the war".
Would people have been happier if I had just wrote that:
I had "supported the war".
Seriously, it's all about semantics. If you didn't look that hard at the evidence then you would be easily convinced. I was just of the opinion that my nation wouldn't decieve me. Call it naive, but it's just as stupid to naively assume that your government is lying about (most) everything.
So, I was stupid enough to fall for exactly the PR line that they setup, so what? Advertisement convinces more people to do stupid shit than "support the war". Why don't people get so upset about people being stupid enough to buy an extended warranty on electronics?
The guild i belong to has a very solid loot protocol:
Need/Greed on BOE Need/Pass on BOP if everybody passes roll on de
there's almost always an Enchanter in the group, but when there isn't we just stick with the protocol, and/roll on the loot
this keeps things very clear and usually honest!
God, I wish more people used this... this would actually make sense. But the one group I did LBRS with people were all "No roll on quest items, then we'll/roll for them." It was like... um... ??? After that it was master-loot on bosses for about ten minutes before we disbanded.
Of course, this wasn't a guild run, so as you can imagine YMMV with random teams.
This is not a flame, nor am I going to argue with you no matter what you say....
How exactly do you support the war? Besides with taxes I mean.
Damn tensing... I actually intended to put "supported" the war. And by supported, I mean, I voted for Bush, and I gave my vocalized opinion that the war were necessary under the conditions presented by the US government. So, no outright physical support, just more of a homeland-morale kind of support.
A few vocal people seem to keep getting hung up on me "supporting the war", and don't stop to realize that this guy was just outright retarded and didn't bother to actually verify any thing that he used in order to judge me "unworthy".
Thanks for asking though, I suppose it's important to clarify somethings.
Will whatever semantic bullshit you want onto this stupid story.
Because that's exactly what it is, stupid. The guy didn't say which war, he left it presumed that everyone would know which "war" he was refering to.
God, I'm getting so much shit over just saying "I supported the war"... fuck people, I saw the same evidence you did, just it convinced me. I felt that our country wouldn't bring up something like this unless it were necessary. Was the evidence valid and correct? It's pretty apparent that it wasn't... NOW.
Would I support the war now? I don't know, but as long as we're there we damn well ought to do it right. That's why Germany came in after the fact. "Well, you're already there, nothing we can do about it now, except make sure you don't fuck it up worse."
DONKEY: Oh, you both have layers. Oh. [Sniffs] You know, not everybody likes onions. Cake! Everybody loves cakes! Cakes have layers.
SHREK: I don't care... what everyone likes. Ogres are not like cakes.
DONKEY: You know what else everybody likes? Parfaits. Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get some parfait," they say, "Hell no, I don't like no parfait"? Parfaits are delicious.
SHREK: No! You dense, irritating, miniature beast of burden! Ogres are like onions! End of story. Bye-bye. See ya later.
of course it's a moot point if somebody actually needs the item. but it all works out in the end.
Yeah, I think he's refering to the same thing that I am. That a lot of people seem to want to not use the in-game loot system, and/roll for the item, rather than use the in-game loot system to roll for the item.
I was in another group once where either every kept rolling need for everything (which is preposterous) or they insisted that everyone roll greed.
Either way, there are some groups out there where they take the most retarded loot rules possible, and totally ignore that the in-game system is there to help.
If someone doesn't want to team up with foreigners, I'm guessing that there's something going on other than not wanting to support gold farming.
I use the German client, just to get practice on my German. Every item I link is in German on the text bar. One day someone asked me why everything I linked on the chat was in German, and I said 'cause I'm using the German client, and he said.
"Sorry, I just can't support those who didn't support us during the war." Then left the Guild.
Now, be entirely aware that I am: a.) american, and b.) support the war.
Add to that the following statement (my own): "Being a Microsoft proponent in an argument about operating systems is like being a white male in a discussion on discrimination."
The issue here with virus proection in computers is that it is entirely reactive. Even if you have that shiney new virus scanner, it won't catch viruses that are written after your virus lists have been updated.
Essentially, this whole herd immunity thing is going to exist on OSX until it becomes an issue. There was nothing that the Native Americans could have done to prepare themselves for smallpox, except wait for it to come. In the same way, there's nothing that OSX can do to reasonably protect themselves now.
Exactly. That's what I was trying to say. While choice sometimes exists at least theoretically, sometimes it can be considered wrong/offensive just to even consider that they might exist.
I got a copy of office for mac 2004 through a special licensing agreement through my employer for the cost of media ($19.95 I think) and I can count the number of times I've used it on a quadriplegics limbs. Worst. Investment. Evar.
Heh... yeah, I bought Office + VPC for around $60 through my employee discount. I use VPC just because I like emulators, and also the significant use recently is because the only way to login remotely to my work is through Windows, and I have one of those lovely jobs that is essentially on-call, so I gotta be able to get on from home.
Of course, I also bought two copies of Windows expecting to use one of them. Then I realized I don't use Windows, and I ended up giving them out for Christmas 4 months later.
It's amazing how after just 5 years of use, I've managed to get so accustomed to not using MS programs that my store discount is practically worthless.
Microsoft really needs to stop offering my fellow Apple geeks and I stuff. We don't want it. We don't need it. We don't buy it. Period.
Yeah, I'd say the typical attitude is, go and do your thing on your mac, when you run into that brick wall of some stupid Windows user that won't accept anything but a proprietary MS format, then you load up Carracho and go hunting.
Many Mac users don't see the point in paying $250 for MS Office for Mac even, unless they regularly interact with Windows users.
My guess is that you do not have any dependants of your own.
No, I don't have dependents. Also, I weighed heavily if this would be offensive. Because it is an offensive thing to say. I took it that MH42 is a pretty understanding guy, and understands the explanation of alternatives for the sake of alternatives.
I also attempted to explain that I don't suggest anyone actually do such a thing as just ditching a dependent. That's just fucking cruel.
But there are some assholes out there that go and do that. I'm fairly confident that MH42 isn't one of them though. But sometimes, the most rational and loving people are just pushed to the limit and in a moment of "perfect clarity" see a solution that really isn't a good solution at all, and unfortunately it has irreversible consequences.
I believed that MH42 would understand the intent, and appreciate the POV, and dismiss it- as I did- as a choice which carries such ridiculous consequences and morally offensive actions as to make it essentially no choice at all but to remain.
I suppose a bit of MH42 being offensive to make people think is rubbing off on me...
There exists nothing in current US copyright law to allow private use appart from any license.
GPL code is generally only distributed under the GPL.
Being that you violated the GPL, you now no longer have *any* license for that software, and thus have no usage rights.
If you disagree, I'd like to know what mythical license you're imagining that grants you right to use appart from the GPL.
On an aside, I didn't think there was any violation to the GPL that could stop you from being able to use Linux. A GPL violation would make you lose your right to distribute it, right?

Ok fucktard go back to listening to rush.
Yeah, damn that medical problem that kept me out of the military, which you know nothing about, and are completely unqualified to comment about.
Silly argument. It's not a question of grammar, but of whether you consider a company to be a single entity or a collection.
