  5. Practicality and Fashion on Oracle Won't Abandon SPARC, Says Ellison · · Score: 4, Insightful

"But the appeal of the Mac and the Lisa was as much or more fashion and style as it was practical."

That's an interesting statement, and it betrays more about you than about the topic we're discussing. I remember back when I went to school and the schoolwork our teachers handed out suddenly changed from photocopied hand-written stuff to neatly layouted, professionally looking stuff. That was when the Mac came out and normal people were suddenly able to use computers in a meaningful way.

You're a geek. You don't care about normal people, because you were perfectly happy with DOS or whatever you were using. To you, all that stuff that made computers usable for everyone else was just "fashion".

You were as wrong then as you are now.

To you, the iPod is a fashion statement because you were happy with the MP3 players that came before the iPod. To most people, those were unusable, bulky pieces of crap. You were happy with cell phones before the iPhone came out. Most people hated their cell phones and used them only for the most basic things.

Perhaps creating things normal people can actually use seems like "fashion" to you, but most people don't use these devices for their own sake; they don't enjoy learning complex stuff just to learn complex stuff. They want to get stuff done, and all of those things that you like, all those ways you can tinker with your toys actually only get in their way.

Apple's success is not about fashion and style, it is about normal people getting stuff done.

The fact that the Wii Remote doesn't meet any resistance hasn't really been an issue so far. The main problem with sword fighting games on the Wii was that the Wii Remote wasn't precise enough to detect more than very generic swipes.

The lack of resistance might become an issue with Motion Plus, but I think it's something that games could work around. Yeah, it's never going to feel quite right, but then, playing racing games never quite feels like driving a real car, either :-)

  13. True on Athletes' Brains Reveal Concussion Damage · · Score: 1

Deifying athletics is ridiculous - but so is ridiculing it. Music, art, athletics, hell, even math and science for the vast majority of high schoolers, are not things we teach our children because we want them to spend the rest of their lives painting or playing guitar. They are ways to grow the whole human body and mind into a stronger, faster, smarter, more social, more responsible, and just pure *better* adult.

Or at least they should be.

The goal of school should be to produce well-rounded people. That includes being able to read, math skills, logical thinking and similar things, but it also includes being healthy, and having at least some basic knowledge of arts, and being able to draw, and to make music, at least on some basic level.

Too often, people assume that the goal of school is to produce a workforce for corporations. This is the wrong way of looking at it. The goal of school should be to produce people who have the abilities they need to live a happy life. This includes, of course, being able to work, but it isn't the only aspect by far.

Two; they assume intent should be accounted for after the fact.

I don't. I think the result should be taken into consideration when evaluation somebody's actions - again, not talking about the law.

As for the rest of your comment; I'm not quite sure what I did to upset you so. I don't have the time to read your whole essay, just one small point:

Fine, let's assume we live in a world that values the noble efforts of hackers and someone hacked Twitter and alerted them to this problem before an evil cracker used this exploit for his nefarious designs. So we've created an atmosphere where everyone feels secure walking around "checking the locks" as I said earlier.

Precisely, and that is exactly what you want, because you can be sure as hell that the bad guys are checking the locks, too.

Are you going to feel more secure knowing there are a lot of people trying to find ways into your system

Looking at my logs, a lot of people are already trying to find ways into my systems. Hopefully, not all of them are bad guys.

Frankly, I don't understand your position. You're making it sound as though you think that not having "good" hackers will make the "bad" hackers go away. It won't.

People are trying to hack my systems constantly, and if somebody sends me a message saying "hey, you forgot to validate user input in that form", or "hey, you don't prevent an infinite amount of login attempts on that site", you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to fucking thank them for alerting me to the problem.

That was terribly funny, but also terribly stupid. The analogy simply doesn't hold. You know quite well how secure your home is. On the other hand, if there are security issues with IT infrastructure, you probably don't know about them. It's not very useful for you if somebody tells you that your door locks suck; having crappy locks may even be a conscious decision on your part. It is, however, very useful for you if somebody points out security issues with your computer systems. Having security holes in your system is never (well, rarely) a conscious decision.

If a "nice" hacker had alerted twitter to this issue, the current situation would never have occurred.
