You would prefer the game company be punished like they are now?

I'm not sure why you would say that. In fact, I would prefer quite the opposite. If the rating of games, and the sale of games were controlled more clearly, game companies should have a lot less problems because they could show that their games would not be sold to kids too young to play them.

People have a freedom to sue others, which is good and bad. Her ratings laws helps protect the game makers by putting the responsibility in the seller's lap, which is where it should be.

Okay, now I'm not entirely sure why you are arguing with me. I think we agree on this. I wrote "I see no reason why shops should (...) not punished for selling AO games to 10-year-olds."

Although I understand your point, I don't think the analogy's very good even in non-rainy countries since, if there's a front coming in "no rain" might be a bad prediction.

Yeah, but that would require that you inform yourself about these things; and you don't have to, because even if you don't, you're probably right by predicting "no rain" due to the statistics of the wheather.

But if you want to win as often as possible, you never lay them down, because you don't know which time you should. It's similar to predicting the wheather: If you want to be right as often as possible, always predict "no rain" and you'll beat any real model. Knowing when to fold has got nothing to do with statistics in this case, but everything with psychology.

Several posts have mentioned that the console makers have to give their ok for an AO game to be released on said platform. Does anyone know if there is any sort of work being done on an open source hardware platform kind of thing, for which AO rated games would be freely available without mfr's "upgrade kit/license"?

Windows, Mac, Linux, GP2X, take your pick :-)

I have no issues with the state "helping" parents a bit by forcing them to acknowledge ratings. I see no reason why shops should be punished for selling alcohol to 20-year-olds, but not punished for selling AO games to 10-year-olds.

It's actually a very small step to snuff films, themselves...

I don't think so. While I find stuff like Saw and Hostel pretty disgusting, there's a world of difference between watching a special effect of someone having his eye cut off, and watching someone really having his eye cut off. I think stuff like Hostel is more on the lines of all those gore/slasher movies. Even movies like Braindead or Bad Taste or Evil Dead have horribly brutal scenes, but you really couldn't compare them to snuff. If it's not real, there's always a slight amount of comedy involved in all the over-the-top violence.

I think Braindead is extremely funny, but I couldn't watch an actual snuff movie.

The reason for auto aim is not simply the sticks, and I've given plenty of logical arguments showing why. Being a game developer myself, I think that I have just a little more insight into the full reasoning.

I think not. So, what games have you worked on?

  13. Re:I Heart PS3 on Price Cut Leads To PS3, PSP Sales Boost · · Score: 1

Wouldn't a low resolution make aiming easier? High resolution doesn't mean "16x more chances to get it right." If anything, it means "stuff can be a lot smaller and thus harder to hit." I never had an issue with aiming in Wolfenstein or Doom :-) We used to play PC FPS in 320*240 and 640*480, and we never needed auto-aim. And HD console games also have auto-aim, as you say.

Yeah, you're sitting closer to a Computer screen than to a TV, but TVs are bigger than TV screens, which somewhat makes up for it. In my case, the beamer's picture takes up more of my field of vision than my notebook's screen at typical distance.

No, the reason for including it is clearly that it's harder to aim with sticks than with a mouse.

And I still don't believe you could possibly be serious.

    KB/M is *not* inherently better,

Except that they are. Small movements are a lot easier using the mouse, and fast movements are not constrained by how far your stick moves. There's a reason auto-aim was invented for console FPS.

they're just easier to play at a reasonably competent level, dual-sticks takes a little more getting used to, which some people seem unwilling, or incapable of doing

See, you yourself admit that a person who is capable of using a mouse might incapable of learning dual stick controls. That alone makes one inherently superior over the other.

For Solo play the Wii is ridiculously bad so far (Zelda being the exception).

It clearly is better suited for party gaming, but "ridiculously bad" is harsh. There are many good single-player games available: Zelda, Resi 4 (yeah, it's a port, but it's the best version of one of the best games of all time), Super Paper Mario, Mercury Meltdown, Trauma Center, Godfather (the Wii version is the only one worth owning), Elebits, Excite Truck (which is a lot better than most people claim), SSX, two great golf games, Scarface, and finally a good 3D Sonic.

As of now, I would recommend the Wii over the PS3 even for single-player gaming. Neither can hold a candle to the selection on the 360, but the Wii is doing great for its (lack of) age.

The Wii is viral. People who play with it actually look like they were having fun. It's easy for everyone to get into it. Take out a Wii at a party, and sooner or later everyone has his or her own Mii, and ad-hoc Tennis tournaments will start. Non-gamers love playing these games - at my place, Wii Play is actually one of the most played games, despite the fact that all "real" gamers seem to hate it.

I find it hilarious that a lot of gamers are still in denial about the Wii. Most people don't really care about 100-hour epics. Most people have lives outside of video games, and a bunch of light minigames is just what they want. Not that the Wii doesn't have other games as well, but this is where it exceeds, and why it is a success.

    - if the 360 wins, we get more FPS and car racers
    - if the PS3 wins, we probably get more JRPGs and car racers

Which is why I own a Wii and a PS3.

I really don't get this disdain for those who actually can play with dual analog. Its really just a matter of getting good using the controls, just like being able to make those twitch-shots with a mouse and keyboard on the PC.

I think nobody can seriously claim that it's only a matter of getting used to the controls. Clearly, keyboard and mouse are superior to dual-analog gamepads for controlling FPS. Personally, I used to play a lot of FPS on PCs (starting from Wolfenstein, Doom and Marathon), but when I stopped playing PC games and moved to playing mainly console games, I also stopped playing FPS. Yeah, I'm sure you can get used to the controls, but I never did, and even if you do get used, the mouse remains superior - which is one of the reasons why there are few online FPS that mix PC and console gamers. It's just not fair to the console gamers.

It's only with the Wii that I've started getting into FPS again.
