He was VERY suprised that this got posted at all, but I guess getting smoke outta stuff may be something everyone should know.

The point is, that if UMG found a song being traded on gnutella, and examined it, they could theoretically (if they applied the watermarks well enough) find out who leaked it. So of course you can put it on your ipod, you can even load mp3s of it to your friends, but you'd have to trust your friends not to share them. Of course UMG is likly not going to bust most, but they definatly will bust someone who is a mass trader.

This is windows XP (and higher) only. Windows XP already comes with a VNC client server setup that works quite nicely. I can log in as any user and it operates at pretty decent speeds. Just wish multiple logons were possible. Either way, this is what they are using I'm sure. Infact if you bought a tablet PC with wifi you could probably do this right now, but hopefully as these will be dedicated towards VNC they will be significantly cheaper.

The other question, is if they are blocking gator from working on peoples computers who are just visiting their website from elsewhere. Its simply not obvious which is happening honestly.

Your computer contacts your ISPs DNS server asking where www.slashdot.org is. That computer if it knows the answer (which it often does as it keeps stores request for a few hours) Tells you the answer, if it doesn't or it only knows the partial answer (it might know the DNS server for slashdot.org in which it would go straight there and ask where www.slashdot.org is. Anyways your ISPs DNs server will assuming it didn't know the answer and immediently tell you, do one of two things, depending upon how its programmed, very small isps or most company intranet DNS servers, will ask its ISPs DNS server. Or assuming its a normal ISP with randomly pick one of X number of servers. (by my list, (not updated sence 1997) 14 different servers A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET to M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET) Of course the IP address of these servers are more important than the names. This server tells me that slashdot.org's domain name records are stored at ns1.osdn.com (and ns2 and ns3 as backups) and gives these ip addresses of ns1.osdn.org and the backups, then tells my local dns to keep this info on hand for just short of 2 days. My DNs server then asks ns1.osdn.org just where I can find www.slashdot.org, this server will answer me.

Of course the funny thing is that if we start right now, using only current tech throughout the entire project it would obviously take about 216 years, and if we used progresivly better technology we'd probably only beat the team that started 43 years from now by a few months, but I personally don't care to try to do the math for that now.

In Seti, if some mallicious user sends a I have found ET packet, it can easily be checked and confermed (which I believe is automated even) same with all the other distributed systems so far, a user sending back important info is rare enough that it can be checked. While in weather predictions each user will probably be solving a piece of a puzzle so each users will be sending back significant amounts of info not just occasiall rare users. So each user can't be checked. So the checking mechanism has to be done client side, a virtual impossibility if you ask me.
