  1. analysis on Open Source causes more Harm than Good? · · Score: 2

Alright, just to offer my own $.02
Netscapes release of their source code for the mozilla project was under the complete understanding that it would eventually have to be modified, and released as a closed source executable for the final release as Communicator 5.0 This is due mainly to the fact that the RSA encryption that needs to be included for secure transmittion, is neither owned by Netscape, nor does Netscape have the right to release its source. But the accual mozilla engine, primarly the NGLayout/Gecko will be completly open for many people to use and incorperate into their own projects. This will create a whole new world of interactivity, offering top quality browsers to any device.
This article goes on to imply that any open source project created with the intent to eventually makea profit from its final code, is destroying the community.
While I must admit That many such projects and licenses may have thier problems *cough**fruit**cough* I don't believe that the entire idea is one that should be discarded. The community just needs to be allowed to progress and change. Hopefully developing a license that works for all parties involved. One that gives credit where credit is due, and not only encourages inovation, but rewards it.
While I know I will get flamed for this, but a socialist view of software, like reallife, can only exist on a limited scale. Now that we are becoming a global market. One can't expect to compete, when there is no initiative for competition. Yes I will admit the ideas and thoughts behind the linux movement are a great motivation. But what happens a generation or two down, when people are raised to expect their software for free. And told to let those techies fix it for them. Eventually resentment among the ranks occurs, and all hell breaks loose.
While I don't admit to having the answer, I envision of model in which each individual can profit from their works if they wish, but yet allowing the community as a whole to use their ideas in developing thier own solutions. Much like the web itself is today. You can easily view a pages source. But yet while still allowing that page to profit off its own existence. We expand our own understanding, and can use such ideas to help the Greater Good.

Rob uses the comments from the users in his process of creating his masterpeice, and therefor has it on the regular server, so he can obtain the widest base of comments possible.
But I have yet to see any seriously buggy code on this server. As always I can read the comments and reply to them.

Any self respecting Hardware Geek, will without a doupt come equipt with a Leatherman, or like brand. Most Geeks are addicted to communication, and generally can't live without atleast a pager at bare minimum. Though a cell phone is always nice to have. Many prefer the new ones with the vibrating batteries, as to avoid those embarassing moments when a call interupts a movie, or other comfortable moments of scilence.
But seriously, what is a geek to do today when it comes to fashion. In days past, a geek would be recognized from afar by his/hers collection of gadgets and not to mention the hornrimmed glasses. But in todays times, the geek blends into society. Where such geek gadgets are common place, even among the most ungeeky of buisness. Some geeks strive toward a new style, hoping to seperate themselves among the herd of sheep. While other geeks are more than happy to assimulate, and blend into the surroundings wishing to be left alone.

Thats why UF said that they probably already said too much. Hope they don't lose the case just based upon that. That would be sad.

If moderation works, then why in the MS/PII/LINUX article is the entire comment section filled with comments about moderation and censorship. The first positive comment was someone complaining about the moderation effort, and everyother comment ended up dealing with that same subject. What bothers me is not that these comments were allowed to stay, but why did this off topic comment that started it all get a score of 3?????
is it just me or does that seem a bit out of line?

For those with hopes to someday be able to moderate, it would be nice to be able to know our score.

RedHat can be picked up for next to nothing from any number of cd vendors like linuxmall for the cd only. Which I personally would gladly pay 3 or 4 dollars then waist my time downloading from the ftp. But redhat make NOTHING from these sales. So the size of redhat ultimatly has little to do with the money redhat makes. What redhat makes its money from is people going any buying thier manuals and support with the cd. So if you just want to program, but don't care to waste your time on the ftp, go burn a cd.
