There is a huge problem here. I spend X amt of time slaving over an essay, then they chunk it thru a computer?!?!? Where's the love? I mean, writing has been/is/will be done for the joy of writing as much as for the joy of reading. I do not approve of this system as it moves us more in the direction of statistical automatons, away from our humanity...

  4. re: saving the movie on Can Star Wars Episode III Be Saved? · · Score: 1

Well, while it might be argued a lot of ways, my argument is that it does not need saving. There are pros and cons of every movie. The Star Wars movies are not special except for the fact that we all grew up with them. The first three were ground breaking in their time, these last two were ground breaking in their time and I'm sure the last one will be too, but not in the arena of Dialogue, more in the arena of ideas and filmography. I wasn't impressed with I or II the way I was with IV,V, and VI. However, the movies were filling in the blanks that only our imaginations had done for before, and the imagination of a generation is more difficult to out-do than anything I can imagine. The same thing applies to all these wonderful books and comic books being made into movies; they're trying to outdo the imaginations of whole generations. When they fall short it isn't because of poor directing or of poor script writing, its because our expectations are so high that its damned difficult to attain that level of spectacularity. Most movies have this issue. When taken for what they are, without the hype and expectation built up, they generally do well, but when they have hype and expectation built up, they generally fall short, flat on their face.

While I can't say Star Wars I is my all time favourite movie, I can say that just like Star Wars I, I am eager to see Star Wars III.

The princess bride was a better story than the article turned out to be. It turns out that it takes 2 observers and a rat to locate the mines and they have to section it off into lanes first. Not the safest procedure on planet earth. but then, the rats are the ones supposedly risking their necks.

Its rather interesting that in the article they talk about the rats like they're some time of machine that must be 'recalibrated' for each mine field.

    Oh well, fun stuff.

Someone forgot about the endless drivers searches that ensued and the IRQ conflicts and other melodrama of trying to get a sound card to work in Windows 95, which wasn't even really an OS, it was a front end for DOS 7.0...

Linux may have difficulty with some sound cards. But the same is true of Windows. The only OS that wouldn't ever have difficulty with any hardware is one where the hardware and software manufacturer are one and the same. Apple is one such company. Sun is another. Cisco another.

Not saying that Windows is better than Linux or vice versa. They both have their application. Simply stating that Windows 95 didn't have full compatability with all sound cards.

  10. Anti-HIV Virus on Anti-HIV Virus Developed · · Score: 2, Insightful

The interesting thing here is that they have done something cheaply, not something new. The idea of curing a virus with a virus is not new, as someone already pointed out. The difference with what has been done, and what is being presented as something that should be done, is this.

Smallpox killed a _lot_ of people.
AIDs kills no one. It makes it possible for another disease to eliminate you, any other disease. The only interesting thought that I get out of this is simply, if we're going to attempt to cure AIDs by gene therapy, we should take a look at therapeutically altering the immune system to make it AIDs capable instead of its current state, in which it is incapable of dealing with it.

AIDs is not unique in its status of being a virus that our bodies cannot fight or loses the battle with, several disease are like that.

I think it would be awesome if we could derive a virus gene therapy that would make our immune systems disease proof. Not eternal life by any stretch of the imagination, but losing life to viruses is horrible, especially when this life stealing virus' means of propagation is our own...

    Just some thoughts...

Is this just for the server side? Or will IBM be distributing this on PCs also?

Oh, I'm sorry, IBM doesn't distribute PCs, only laptops.

On the server side, there should only be a quick rewrite of the kernel to allow for the hardware in question. However, rewriting the kernel, means that it won't be Linux any longer, but merely a GNU compliant list of applications to run on an OS that strongly resembles linux.

Unix so 0wnz this situation, because the hardware is more toward the mainframe situation.

On the thinkpad and other IBM attrocities, I have only this to say. If it were on a UPS it wouldn't have a battery issue, but then, were I on a UPS I wouldn't have a battery issue either.
