    Ok, I was thinking of an enterpise production environment. For personal use, or low risk projects C# may be fine. For me C# hasn't crossed the threadhold of advantage over Java, but I would like to play with it.

    Benchmark may be very tricky and variant, you have to understand very well what are you doing. Could someone with experience in bechmarking verify is this bechmark has any sense? The author doesn't seem to known very well the languages he is benchmark. For example he doesn't seem to know that the JVM actually compiles on the fly and the VB bechmark is writen in VB6 old style.

    Other than MS in windows you don't have a robust, complete, supported, known implementation with years of experience and products/libraries (like in AS/400, Linux, Unix?). And no, mono isn't ever near that.

    I doesn't says so. But others implementations may be faster in some aspect or in general. From the bechmark I think there's a bug in 1.4.2 performance.

    Comparing awk and java doesn't have any sense (pears and apples). Platform specific is not the objetive of java and neither replace perl. In fact java intents to be very portable, but nobody says that it will be whatever everyone wants it to be.

    Last time I check only humans made cities, but global heat may have increased the evolution rate of bees or something.

    You don't live in my coutry. Lot's of good programmer s do less than that and at India may be less. And I'm talking about experienced, educated, trained people. Or at least those that stayed and didn't leave to USA or Europe for a better living.

    That's how I do my backups. /dev/null is surprisingly fast to backup and use /dev/rand to restore. Plus I never have to change tapes or even compress the backups...

    Money going into a country at all is a big benefit, wether it goes to workers, a corporation, or a government.
    In my country the foreing companies took out more money than they put in, a lot of money also was gone in corruption (that's how does companies hadn't problems) so I wouldn't coun't on that happening magically.

    We use it on our work to know the other guy has read the mail, somehow it's configured in the server. You can configure in the client if want to ask for it or not. Not only that, exchange/outlook let you see in the sent items which destinations had read it and when. It's very useful for us, at least for internal mail.
