That's assuming that something couldn't be hacked on the cheap--it only has to look like a CMTS to one modem for a brief operation. Still, (a) why go to the bother? (b) messing with the people who own your wire is a bad idea.
Only if you have direct access to the CMTS system can you upload new BIN configuration files to these modems on the fly.
It's a good thing that spoofing a CMTS system to the modem and giving it new BIN files, and then the new software lying to checksum/CRC tests is a tricky operation. But don't assume that it's impossible.
If you install their proxy server, for the love of Glod, make sure that it no longer defaults to an open proxy. AnalogX proxy was the spammer's friend long before spammers thought of using zombies. (Nice if configured to only let your LAN proxy out, but that open to the Internet default was dangerous.)
Of course, people who do leave it open will find it hard to post on Slashdot.
I think you'll find that Quicktime finds it really hard to do that after you delete/rename the program it wants to launch. (If you goof, reinstall QT.)
AnnoyingAsHellWare behaves or gets the bits blasted out of it.
I think that after the wave of small pirate FM stations a few years ago, the FCC keeps tighter controls on manufacturers of assembled units than just 100mW and 6' antenna (or whatever Part 15 is limited to these days). The general rules on causing no interference allow them to do that. A kit might allow getting closer to the legal limits without going over. (But you take the responsibility for not causing interference.)
Oh, forgot to mention that most worries about format , player, DRM or OS go away. (If you can hear it at the computer, you can hear on the radio.) Also, any "you've got mail" or "you have a conference call in five minutes" sounds or speech will heard too -- which may or may not be a good thing.
I would have gone for a low tech solution by pluging the computer's audio line-out into a FM wireless mic/transmitter. It's not as fancy, without remote control and bells and whistles, but costs less and could be listened to by any FM radio in the house. (And neighbouring houses depending on your power and antenna.)
It's asphalt parking lots and bright shopping malls full of shoe shops. A different type of replicator and far more frightening. The shoe-event horizon draws nigh!
They did have one. But it deployed in the small closed server room. They're not sure where the rocket went and they're still trying to find the operator.
No, dark fiber. Global Crossing wired up the city of Ryleh, the Mountains of Madness, and the Plains of Leng several years ago. Now they can't shut down the damned Cthisco routers!
That one just isn't going to change. Never has, never will.

You've obviously never played DoomTetris, the FPS version. It's damned hard to catch those blocks while holding the flashlight, and that creepy music...
Let me amend my comment to: It wouldn't surprise me if they used LoadImage somewhere in their code. Not in the main graphics routines, but somewhere out of the way. If they did, will that cause problems? Who knows. That's the trouble with errors in basic routines. But at least with OSS it's possible to grep, look, and be sure.
I maintain that virus writers should be dragged into the street and beaten with keyboards
No worries there, I have an IBM model M keyboard that'd drop them in their tracks, but it'd never be clean again. And the disposable keyboards just don't pack the wallop to down a full-grown spammer. Your best bet is to set up a ramp to a camouflaged log chipper and lure them in with calls like "I need a mortgage", "I want v14gr4!", "I want to invest in Nigeria". Works like a charm!
The Sims solution would be best: Take away the ladder.

Really? In what way?

Link? GoogleNews doesn't have anything about they being sued. (Just other stories and press releases.)

Man, I'm getting tired of that song!

Some people block parts of the US already. UUNET, Comcast ..
"That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die."
Unless it buys NEW HGH as advertised on television!

A lump of coal where the server once stood. He should have left scotch and cookies under the USB Christmas tree.
Now you've done it! The Buzzinator is probably on his way already. Fists of doom!
Injury: Having Big Brother record your entire life.
Insult: Your life is rejected by Big Brother's spam filters.
And humbug to the rest of you!
