  3. Re:motion blur != ghosting on Are LCD Displays Ready For Gaming? · · Score: 1, Insightful

Ghosting is when you get a faint duplicate of the entire on-screen image, slightly offset from what it should be. I don't think this can even occur on LCDs, I think it is a CRT-only problem, but if you use crappy analogue VGA cables, then who knows?

Motion blur is what you thing ghosting is. It is caused by poor refresh times, more specifically it is caused the amount of time it takes for a pixel to become unlit, or "switch off". So LCD screens that have a poor response time often show a trail after a moving object that looks like a ghost of the object.

Well since just about anyone who uses these, sells them, or just talks about them refers to the effect as "ghosting," I think it's pretty safe to say that it's the right term. Languages adapt to the way people use them. See Homer Simpsons 'doh' in the dictionary as a great example.

  4. Where have you been? on Are LCD Displays Ready For Gaming? · · Score: 4, Informative

This question is about a year too late.

The simple answer is yes, they are and have been ready for gaming.

I play on a 25ms response time Samsung SyncMaster 191t and I see no ghosting at all. It's just like playing in front of a CRT only your eyes don't hurt when you have a somewhat long gaming session. If you are really worried about it, get a 16ms response time CRT and you'll be fine.

  6. Re:Gateway made huge mistakes on Sony Quietly Opening Retail Stores · · Score: 2, Interesting

Gateway didn't succeed because you went to their store to configure and order a machine. You then waited several weeks or longer for it to arrive. When they had these in my area they did zilch. People could go to any number of stores and walk out with a computer and when people are ready to buy, most didn't want to drive to a store just to place an order. I think that towards the end they started keeping a few preconfigured machines in stock but not many. They also had an awful compensation plan for their sales people.

Emphasis mine, but to show a point. That was one of the biggest mistakes that they made. The commission plan that Gateway had in effect made the sales people prettymuch force the "extras" down peoples throat. I worked at Gateway Country stores for almost 3 years and I routinely was forced to rip off anyone that walked in the store. You only make 0.5% off the actual hardware that was sold, which ended up being only a few dollars per month. The way that we all made money was on the 100% profit items for Gateway: training, software, and warranties. ESPECIALLY training. In the end I left the store and didn't even bother calling in to quit because I was so disgusted with making elderly couples purchase a $500 system with $2000 of training and warranties on it.

At least at the other places the sales people are hourly rate only, little to no commission, so if you say you don't want something they will mostly say ok and continue on. At Gateway stores, the salesmen would still find a way to tack that training onto the quote and hide it somewhere in the final price.

This caused many people buying from Gateway Country stores to get upset since they would always find systems either on gateways website or from another company for 1/2 or 1/3 the price they just paid. Pissing off almost every customer that walks into your store when there is both a CompUSA and Best Buy directly across the street is not the way to run a business.

  8. Re:Hmmm on Xbox 2 Announcement Expected at CES · · Score: 1

Will it be again a huge money-loosing system, or are they expecting to start turning a profit now that they have made a (arguably) name for themselves among gamers.

Also to wonder is, will the XBox 2 be as mod-able as the original? I know many many people that only purchased it because it could be used for so many more purposes than originally intended. But that doesn't exactly benefit MS, since they don't get only loose money on the system sale.

Every company tries to make their systems less modable whenever they can. That's part of the reason the original Playstation had 5 or 6 different models out (I remember having to go to funcoland and asking to see every used PSX there before picking up a couple of the earliest models I could find). Mod chips = lost business for the most part (Yes I know about imports and "backups" and if that's all you did then more power to you... 95% of the people installed mod chips to pirate games)

If it is modable, it will help them though. An Xbox sold is one that potentially will be buying games. Microsoft can show that they have 10,000,000 sold Xboxes and try to get developers to make the game Xbox only, even if 9,000,000 of them only use them as a media center PC. It made me laugh when the linux zealots were all crying that everyone should buy 5 and cause them to lose money when the Xbox first came out. I think I only saw a few comments of people pointing out that this increases marketshare for MS.

Also, about the console being a money losing system: Yes, most likely. But so were the PS2 and most other consoles when they came out. I think the GC just barely made a profit when it was first released. That's not the point though, since that is prettymuch par for the course. They make money back on software and licensing rights.

I still download music without paying for it. I probably download more now than ever. The funny thing is I still buy the music that I think is good enough to hear more than once or twice.

Do I use Kazaa? hell no! I have to download 10 versions of a song just to get the "real" version of it... the one without some weird sound effects or just being the first 10 seconds repeated for the 4 minutes that the song should really be.

Welcome to bittorrent land. I'll not post the URL from the server I use regularly for obvious reasons, but rest assured I can get more there than I could with Kazaa anyday. Now I download whole albums at a time instead of just 1 or 2 songs in order to determine if a record is worth buying.

The great thing about bittorrent is that if people find that a song or album is fake they just stop sharing it. All of a sudden that album that should have 2000 people sharing it because it's so good only has 2 people sharing it (and they'll stop as soon as they unzip it and listen). That tells me to pass and find the real version.

I hope the RIAA realizes that instead of ending the problem they just made it burrow deeper. This time there is no centralized network that they can shut down in order to maximize profits from the unsuspecting consumer. If they kill one, 5 more will show up in it's place. I hope they are happy with what they have caused to be created.

Right now, the networks are small. Remember how small Napster or Kazaa began as? What happened a few months to a year later? Exactly... Expect 2004 or 2005 to be the year of bittorrent (or another decentralized network)
