  1. Anyone else having problems with FTP? on Netscape 4.7 Arrives on the Scene · · Score: 1

I can't get on to ftp.netscape.com. It times out after my client sends "PASV". Anyone else?

  2. We're not scared of the LJ effect on Linux Journal 1999 Readers' Choice · · Score: 1

Anyone else notice they linked to everyone else but Slashdot in the best website category? Is this retaliation for the inevitable Slashdot effect the site's going to be getting in a few hours, or are they just being nice because they don't think Slashdot can handle the LJ effect?

For some reason the comment to which I am replying was moderated down as offtopic. Probably because it looks like the person was getting confused with the image on the news page and the real Mandelbrot set. In fact, this poster was correct, and it's a cool link, so please someone, moderate this comment up.

Hops is another issue. For example, it's easy for me to do a traceroute and tell you that I'm 14 hops away from Slashdot, but how many web sites would someone have to click through to get from my web site to Slashdot?

  6. Example program on Web: 19 Clicks Wide · · Score: 2

The really cool thing would be if someone were to write a program (probably a cgi script) that would use a search engine that list pages that link to a site to let you type in two web sites and see the hyperlink path. I wonder how far slashdot.org is from www.microsoft.com?

Yes, I'm replying to my own message. From the timeline on UCLA's site it looks like Sept 2 was the first ping within a node, but on Octo 20 they actually sent a message to another host, at the Stanford Research Institute. Personally, I'd side with the second as the real birthday.

  8. Wired says October 20 on 30th Birthday of the Internet · · Score: 1

A story on Wired News claims the first "ping" was sent on October 20, 1969. They cite this website, the International Internet Day site, as a source of information. Would anyone be so kind as to explain the difference of dates? Was the first ping time a month?

The catch is that he'd have to make it look like a normal user (randomize the message somewhat), and he couldn't tell us. Otherwise lamers could do a "first real post", and it'd be useless. Yeah, it'd be cool, but he couldn't tell us about it.

I have to say this is impressive. It's the middle of the night (in the USA), and we Slashdot Time Warner. These guy don't have wimpy web servers. What was the first site to be Slashdotted?

Tennessee (which I admit is a backwards state) just passed an amazingly good law. As of January 2000 we won't have our SSN's on our driver's licenses. Of course, I guess this national ID would override our state law and void one of the best laws I've seen come out of our legislature...

  15. Your link on /. on Netscape Search to be powered by Google · · Score: 1

Has anyone else noticed that by putting your web page address in your user info on Slashdot, it appears to Google that Slashdot (which is highly rated) has linked to your page every time you post? Although Google kicks ass compared to other search engines (at least for broad topics), this bug/feature demonstrates that the technology still isn't perfect.
