Even more interesting is that this fellow went to India to ask questions. I could easily go ask the H1B in the cube next door the same questions if I wanted.
Err, heres the issue: due to the license constraints on Java Linux distro's are unable to ship java (except for gcj which is not complete). This has also prevented popular open source browsers like Mozilla from implementing it into the core. Now, if Java were handed to a standards board and they free up the JRE Java will flourish.
If an application written with version 1.0 the framework does not work with version 1.1 you can run it against the 1.0 framework.
Stop! Your killing me with laughter here. So you agree that.NET is not backwards compatible. Just say it to yourself a few times and let it sink in. Then, while you try to argue that you can do side by side execution of.NET apps of different versions read this notice on.NET frameworks on Microsoft's website:
Important: You cannot install two different language versions of the.NET Framework on the same machine. Attempting to install a second language version of the.NET Framework will cause the following error to appear: "Setup cannot install Microsoft.NET Framework because another version of the product is already installed."
For someone who is trying so hard to defend.NET you should atleast learn something about it beforehand.
Um, the platform SDK, which pretty much has everything?
Platform SDK? Are you confused into the belief that Windows is built around.NET? The humor continues!.NET is the only Microsoft SDK? You got me rolling now!!
No shit. The point is that when you can run the app in any sandbox you want it doesn't make a whole lot of difference.
Apparently you have no idea what backwards compatibility is. Okay, lets make a simpler example:
Playstation 1 came out. Lots of games were built for it. Playstation 2 came out. For games built for the Playstation 1 to work on the Playstation 2 the Playstation 2 would have to be backwards compatible.
Hrm, I seem to remember having quite a few problems getting Tomcat and Forte both running with the same VM back when I had the misfortune of working with Java.
You were probably running a virtual machine that was too old for one of the two apps. Java is 100% backwards compatible. Not so much so the other way.
Ok, what SDK being used by 10's of thousands of people have MS stopped offering for download replaced with a product that leaves a developer no recourse other than to send them money?
Question with a question: name a SDK that works without Visual Studio besides.NET that is both supported and available for free download?
Again, side by side execution will work *IF* the newer version breaks the old one.
If you give someone a app written in 1.0 to someone with a 1.1 runtime you run into the issue of it not running due to changes from 1.0 to 1.1. Backwards compatibility means that you would still be able to run the 1.0 compiled app on a 1.1 runtime..NET is not 100% backwards compatible. Java is.
Quite a few people are using an open source IDE with the free compiler.
The ide you are talking about, I am guessing, is SharpDevelop. It requires installing the.NET SDK from Microsoft to run. Microsoft could, and probably will, close off downloading the SDK with a future version of.NET. They have done this in the past with other products and its perfectly within thier domain to do so. You have to understand that Microsoft is a company that makes money selling products. Visual Studio is a product. If SharpDevelop cuts into their profits they WILL kill it with this approach. They did not get where they are today by always playing nice.
That's the risk you take when you use anything with a version number 1.0.
Thats sad. Java 1.0 code still runs with Java 1.5. You get alot of deprecation warnings but it still runs.
And you are not addressing that the next version of.NET will make 1.1 incompatible. They will also require you purchase a new copy of Visual Studio.
Java has kept backward compatibility and does not require the purchase of expensive tools for each version upgrade. Im currently using Eclipse IDE and it works great with the latest version.
If Global Economy is the way it should be, and India continues to refuse foreign programmers working in India, shouldnt it be said that India is refusing to respect the idea of Global Economy? Maybe we should insist that India be removed from the WTO for violating trade agreements? Oh, are you going to counter that world trade has nothing to do with global economy? PLEASE DO!
Indian supporters are so fond of using words like "Global Economy" and "Capitalism" which I dont think they really understand (or just try to use to confuse those who dont). Explain how Global Economy works when Local Economy fails?
Let me entertain you with some simple FACTS:
When U.S. programmers loses his/her job to a foreign worker the money they would usually make doing thier job is lost to the community where they live. This causes the following problems:
1) They become a burden to all tax payers by claiming Unemployment. They are highly skilled in a profession that no longer exists.
2) The money they would usually spend on taxs, bills, and general living (groceries, house supplies, etc.) are no longer spent. This means local jobs that sell services to these people lose money. They eventually die.
Ive wrote about this several times in several different news publications. I can given examples all day where outsourcing and other means of cost cutting by companies have killed local communities. I know for a fact that Indians could care a crap less since they dont live here.
If you want an example of where things go wrong go to Gary Indiana and have a look around. Explain why this once proud city is now an urban decay nightmare. Remember to wear a bullet proof vest because the locals can become hostile.
You seem to miss the fact that the Khobar towers bombings targeted American soldiers.
You miss that I already know the history.
These were not criminal acts where the FBI needed to come in,
They were not criminal acts? So if we catch one of the terrorists who commited these acts we should set them free? Terrorists acts are criminal. Duh! FBI was involved in every terrorist attack you mentioned. They are always there.
Never mind. You just making an argument on how bad Clinton was. Here, Ill make it easy: Clinton was a horrible president. Now, with that said lets back on subject.
In other words, brotha, you don't get to choose how you are used once you volunteer, the President does, and you sign on to that voluntarily.
Well, "brotha", lets look at the oath of office for U.S. presidents:
"I, name, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and I will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
I again do not see where taking over foreign countries to acquire thier oil at the cost of hundreds of American lives is part of the duties of the U.S. president. It appears he is abusing his position in office for his own political and finacial gain while stepping over the graves of America's finest. He's basically just a big terrorist.
Say what you want Im ignoring this thread. Its obvious you already know you lost the argument. Just remember when it comes to vote time vote for who you know is best. Dont vote a straight ticket! Know the facts (in otherwords watch something other than just Fox news).
(In other words, not related at all to the action that precipitated the NATO bombing campaign).
The genocide of albanian Kosovians dated before the NATO intervention. NATO acted because there was genocide going on. They did not act BEFORE genocide occurred. With your logic there was no genocide of jews by Adolf Hitler and gang until we invaded germany. Sorry, your losing me with your fuzzy logic.
Oh, and if your trying to hint that only KLA rebels were "mass buried" I can give links all day of women and children buried too:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1412809.stm
Right, because, after all, Iraq never invaded Kuwait or Iran or launched Scuds at Israel, or threatened to invade Saudi Arabia, or tried to assassinate Bush,
President Bush stated that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and we were in "imminent danger". Imminent does not mean something that happened in the past or something that will happen 10 years from now. Production of WMD, when you dont have any nor the facilities to even start, can take years. The only way Iraq would be an imminent threat is if it had WMD already. They dont have any. The are not an immenent danger. Bush lied.
For someone you guys think is a dimwitted fool, he sure seems to be pretty devious, huh? Continually outsmarting his betters on the left. Amazing.
I never called Bush a fool. As for me being a part of the "left", your mistaken. Im independent. I dont vote for the same political party every time.
Like it or not, the purpose of the military is to serve the interests of the state. Period.
Thats funny. I never heard of that. Lets look at the Army oath that soldiers swear to:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
Hmph. Dont see any mention in there about serving the "state" (whatever that is), lucrative oil and reconstruction contracts, or geopolitical dividends. Are you thinking the French Foreign Legion?
WTC 1993, Khobar Towers bombing, Cole attack
Its amazing you point those out. In all cases Clinton worked with our security forces (CIA and FBI) and foreign governments (Yemin and Saudia Arabia in particular) and made hundreds of arrests. Do you think he should have started a full scale ground war on allied countries to get those terrorists? There have been several bombings in Saudi Arabia since Bush is in office. Why not send our troops to invade Saudi Arabia? Will that stop it? And while your at it, there have been hordes of bombings in Israel. Why not invade there also?
Somehow bombing the shit out of the Serbs for spurious claims of genocide (subsequently proven false) despite a lack of a UN mandate was laudable, but liberating 26 million Iraqis on spurious claims of WMD isn't.
In Kosovo there were over 100 mass graves found:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/473017.stm
This is old news. Where ( or who ) have you been listening to to give you false info that there was no genocide going on?
You fools on the left are either unwilling or unable to see that the war in Iraq has paid tremendous geopolitical dividends.
Your trying to confuse the point again. Nice try. President Bush still lied to the American people and soldiers keep dying. Iraq never was a threat to the U.S. or its allies. Now I know there is advantages by having all the oil under our control but I dont think the loss in Americans is worth it. Ill pay extra at the pump if it will save lifes.
And don't pretend to cry crocodile tears over the death of soldiers in Iraq. Your ilk was the same kind that was spitting on soldiers on their return from Vietnam a generation and a half ago.
Listen you idiot I was in the U.S. Army for six years and they are not "crocodile tears". What disgusts me is people like you who think American soldiers are worth, as you said, "geopolitical dividends". Stop hiding behind a flag stating "Im so patriotic" when in truth all you want is some political party to stay in the White House. So save your fake herorics for election day but dont be surprised when people see through your act for what an evil person you really are.
I hope your not taking the line that Iraq was a terrorist threat by linking the Iraq war with 9/11. 9/11 is used too often as an excuse for the war with Iraq. The problem is with that logic is that the war with Iraq was planned by the White House prior to 9/11 and the White House knew that there was no WMD thanks to CIA reports.
Lets see: Clinton lied and made a fool of himself. Bush lied and hundreds of American soldiers died. Which one is worse? You people make me sick that you will point out Clinton issues as an excuse for the deaths of all those soldiers. Your about as un-American as you can get. Maybe you will get the message that no one really cares about Clinton anymore because his crimes, though morally questionable, never got anyone killed.
Were you running GCJ as interpreted (with GIJ) or compiled? Did you use GCJ with an optimized setting (-O2)? By default GCJ, unlike GCC, will include debug if you dont use an optimize setting.
You have to have a real lack in morals to be pro-war. Warfare is something that should be avoided and not promoted. Are you pro-war? Is death and destruction your favorite flavor?
"Neo-con" means "newly conservatve."
No, it actually means "new conservative". Not new to conservative thought but rather a different breed of conservatism. The new conservative is more aggressive and backed generally by businesses and people with lots of $$$. Old conservatives were a more moral group who were more into things like family values, religion, and anti-abortion.
Neocons like Bush were originally labelled ultraconservatives but this was a bad label since they aspouse old conservative values but generally always follow a different route. Take for instance Bush's new imigrant worker plan which old school conservatives hate but companies love.
* I don't get why the fighter bays have to "retract". This is like the Enterprise splitting in two. There is no reason for it.
Retracting the bays is probably a protective measure. The bays open to launch the fighters then close around with protective hull armor to prevent attacks INSIDE the ship. Remember that fuel and ordanance are probably located either on the bay or very close to it and I doubt they would put much armoring inside the bay to stop a stray missle exploding in there.
And I will agree that the Enterprise splitting is up there with stupid and useless features for a ship.
* I like the angle with Baltar. Hoever, they've effectively turned him into Dr. Smith from "Lost In Space". Coincidentally, they were also trying to find Earth.
I hope they dont go with the Dr. Smith approach. I would more like to see him continue as an unwilling pawn of the cylons who really wants to do good for humanity deep inside the selfish individual that he is. His interaction with a seemingly emotionally confused #6 could really keep them in a wierd and interesting part in the series. In my view that duo is the most interesting in the show right now besides the Apollo + Starbuck + his dead brother thingy. Boomer needs to pick it up a notch though.
All three news agencies reported her as being "comatose" when, in fact, this woman is not comatose (in a persistent, vegatative-like state), but rather in an awake, responsive and alert state of being.
She does not respond to stimuli or move on her own (vegatative). That's comatose by definition. Now what does her being or not being comatose have to do with the media being liberal exactly?
What do you hear? Another soldier dead in Iraq, right? Another bomb explodes or another rocket-propelled grenade kills one or more. How about reporting on how Iraq now has pre-war levels of electricity, water and sanitation that was provided by the US and her allies?
I served in the U.S. Army for six years and I get sick and tired of hearing this. Listen, the U.S. military is an extension of the peoples will. If the cause is just the casualty counts dont matter. Covering up loses because we are worried about next year's presidential elections is about as unpatriotic and anti-American as you can get.
Clinton wasn't in office any more...
You must have some odd Clinton fetish. I mean really why are conservatives so stuck on the Clintons? He hasnt been president for years and shes not running. Stop already. No one cares.
Regarding Rush Limbaugh, I do not advocate the use of drugs and I do think he should be investigated. If proof is found that he did indeed obtain these prescription drugs illegally, he should be dealt with through the court system.
Rush is rich. He will most likely buy his way out of this like O.J.
Then why tax more than you're going to spend?
Why spend more than you have?
Oh, yes, Social Security is a wonderful thing. Force me to pay into a retirement fund that I won't collect more than $255 from if I die before retirement age. Yeah, that's fair.
The money you pay covers people who are retired now. When you retire everyone who is not retired will be paying for your retirement.
I prefer a president that is socially conservative rather than a fiscal conservative, but I don't believe I'll see that in my lifetime.
G.W.'s finally getting Clinton's bad economy turned around. The economy was already turning sour when Clinton was in office.
Wheres your facts?
However, the liberal media spin constantly blames the GOP.
Guess you have been listening to too much Rush Drugball or O'Really. Liberal media? Fox news and Clear Channel are both pro-GOP. Name a popular liberal media outlet. Most conservatives attack CNN or NPR but dont carry facts with the blame.
So George W. is spending all those government budget surpluses, huh?
No, the surplus was real. Some people dont get the difference between Dems and Repubs:
Democrats: Tax more than you spend. Republicans: Spend more than you tax.
Its good we rotate the two parties in and out of office to even things out or you either get a monster surplus not being used (Clinton) or a huge deficit (Reagan or Bush Jr).
If Gore won the election, CNN would be blaming the republican-controlled Congress... sigh.
I am guessing you are trying to pin CNN as liberal. CNN has been the target of conservatives for years since it refuses to carry programming like Fox or MSNBC (which has added Scarborough Country) and is the leading news media outlet. I guess you can say CNN is trying to be the true "Fair and Balanced" news outlet rather than spreading misinformation for political parties. Again, can you give proof that CNN is liberal?
It could use a rebranding. I take it in three parts:
1. Naming 2. Visual 3. Audio
(1)A consistant naming convention would be nice. Why Camino AND Phoenix? Why not : Mozilla browser. Yeah, they have different layouts. But they could share a common name since they target different platforms. Thunderbird should become Mozilla Mail. Author was on target with this one.
(2) The Mozilla applications already make elegant use of the windowing systems on all three platforms.
Wrong wrong wrong. Compare IE, Konqueror, or Galeon to Mozilla. Mozilla does not support standard widget look-and-feel. Moz needs to atleast come up with skins that match native look-n-feel.
Think Splash screens Moz team. Give users options to turn them off. Splash screens advertise your product to 3rd parties watching others use the product.
(3)Audio is always missed! Having something corny like the Moz roaring when you get an email can go a long way. Skins for clients should have good sound bites.
Yes, its worth it. Take two programmers: one more skilled then the other. Give the less skilled one the keyboard. Force the skilled guy/girl to have to communicate all typing through the less skilled guy/girl. Less skilled guy/girl not only gets a good understanding of what went into the code (they typed it) but also learns new things from the smarty. Eventually you have two smarties. Repeat.
Who hates the idea of pair programming? Smarties ofcourse. They dont want to lose what they feel makes them special. They are bad for business anyways.
It should also be mentioned that SWT uses native widgets on the platform: not emulation. This means SWT apps render quicker than Qt based apps and behave correctly.
The last time I used a Qt based app on Windows it kept redrawing itself incorrectly. A coworker thought I was running X in a terminal session.
Dude, no developer who's getting paid for it should ever balk over the "cost" of Visual Studio. It has saved me at least two week's time since I started using it, and it's only $600. Write it off.
I have Visual Studio Enterprise sitting on my desk at work. Its okay. I wont say its the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I also wont tell people to drop $600 dollars just to try out.NET. I also never write money off onto my employer. For awhile we were using JBuilder to do Java development which, at Enterprise edition ran $1600+ per developer. After using Eclipse for awhile I dropped our licenses for JBuilder and switched the development team to it instead. Saving the company money like that is why Im in the position where I make those kinds of decisions.

There is something we agree on.
1. Naming
2. Visual
3. Audio
(1)A consistant naming convention would be nice. Why Camino AND Phoenix? Why not : Mozilla browser. Yeah, they have different layouts. But they could share a common name since they target different platforms. Thunderbird should become Mozilla Mail. Author was on target with this one.
(2)
The Mozilla applications already make elegant use of the windowing systems on all three platforms.
There are more than just lwjgl and JOGL:
GL4Java
SDL4Java (has an OpenGL binding)
If you use Qt you have to pay the Trolltech:
$ 4190 per developer for the three OS's mentioned
So, for 5 developers its
$ 20,950
Writing Java apps with SWT:
$ 0 per developer for bunches of OS's.
But I also wont tell people to drop $600 dollars just to try out
