My preferred provocation is to scream "TURN RIGHT, TURN RIGHT" at the TV.
I would agree that the previous poster is certainly trying to stir the pot. I mean, I'm pretty sure that most of the drivers who aren't dumb Americans are just dumb Europeans.
From what I saw, their budget is well in excess of $50 billion, so 2-3 would be less than 10%. I didn't look very carefully or find a source that seemed worth linking though.
The post office is, roughly, a crown corporation. It operates under a government mandate and follows some special rules regarding taxes, but it has been self funded for quite a long time now.
You can set up rules. One of the options for the filters on gmail is to place incoming messages in the Inbox. This effectively turns off spam filtering for messages that match the filter.
It punishes people not doing anything for the actions of others (and it would be 'better' for them to deal with it at the account level, not the message level).
They don't seem to be particularly active in preventing the spam, but they do seem to actually close down accounts that get reported through their web interface (this was more useful 5 months ago when it was 3 or 4 accounts a week in the group I bothered reporting spam for, currently there are dozens a week).
Pull a number from somewhere for how much you think it would cost to cover a square mile with your 'solution'. Now multiply it by thousands and thousands of square miles.
This looks like they were sloppy, but for the 1/2 of slashdot that apparently uses their full name as their email address, the immediate consequences are nil.
Microsoft is thinking that they want to keep growing their business and they have huge income and big war chest to support those activities. They think Yahoo! and AOL are poorly managed and believe they can do a better job 'realizing' value per eyeball. They are prepared to risk billions of dollars because they see billions of dollars in online advertising revenue coming over the next 50 years.
There is nothing racist about disliking Obama. That said, plenty of people dislike Obama because of racism (be it overt or latent).
Choosing McCain over Obama isn't really doing much to support the freedoms and Constitution of this country (hopefully there isn't a God, and if there is, hopefully he hasn't damned us just yet).
In what way is 524 meters more sensible than 1,720 feet? I guess if you also wanted the measurement in centimeters or millimeters it would be handy to state it in meters. Maybe if you wanted to calculate a volume and then a mass from the distance it would be helpful to start in metric, but for the most part, a meter isn't any more, especially in a literal sense, "sensible" than a foot (i.e., the definitions of sensible include "Readily perceived; appreciable.v", which at least colors the meaning of the definition you intended "Acting with or exhibiting good sense").
People have been saying that for a long time now. That's where comparing it to sarcasm comes in. I didn't make any assertion that electric cars won't work real soon now or anything like that, etc.
What could you possibly say in your comment to justify starting it with "Wow.."?

Looking around, it looks like you are correct, but it also looks like it is still better than 90% self funded, which isn't enormously terrible.
Dude, what carrier is offering a temporal calling plan?
You are using a broken plug in or extension. Memory usage in 3.0 is better than it was in 2.0, and the later 2.0.0.x releases saw reductions in leaks.
Yeah, well, so much the better.

Why is Vista sending encrypted communications to General Electric?
Spelling checkers is not the compete salutation.
Oops, maybe not, I thought you could, but I don't see it now that I am looking.

Should have splurged and gone with the $20 hooker huh?

For a while, they didn't give you an account if you were emotionally invested in non personal legal entities.

"drivers"
Does that mean that everybody should post in Chinese?

So let me get this straight, the two biggest issues people have with a candidate are:
A. He doesn't have enough experience.
B. He might change his mind.
(C. is of course, being a secret Muslim)
If he gets some experience and changes his mind, criticize him for B. If he doesn't get any experience, criticize him for A. Genius.
