i'm super torn on this. I love that people are getting access to education that they don't usually get, but at the same time I feel that's just so later they can go 'Well, America doesn't have the skills we need, so we need cheap visa workers to work in this field.'
It's true, thanks to the way technology is we see a lot less crashes, or at least I do.
I think programming has gotten sloppier though because people just asssume, well, it's the dual core age, so it's fine if it locks up the CPU. In the past I think they spent a lot more time optimizing systems, especially since it was single core single thread.
I think they're doing that a lot with games these days too. In the past, illusion and artist trickier made games look fantastic. Games have improved but it feels as if it's a lot more like. Hey, GPU: render_water - poof there is your water effect, and it's a lot more intensive.
Then the older style, where an artist put in a hell of a lot of time with their fake water looks just as good as their 'Well, this is fully simulated water'
However, I could still easily tell that these were not real world images. Some more than others stood out, but in motion these elements still looked 'wrong' for real.
I think his work is fantastic and state of the art, but I think he was a little to hopeful in his video that no one could tell until he said it.
Sorry I didn't mean to imply I was waiting on my browser, but that it chews up a lot of CPU depending on the web pages. So when you're multi-tasking significantly eventually I run into apps being slowed down by existing single threads running on all of the cores.
Right now running 8 cores at 4.0 Ghz has resolved any problems I've had with this happening. In the past the triple core didn't have enough multi-tasking capability, and I was also getting single thread locked as the processor just couldn't execute enough code in time.
Browsers was just an example of something that can take a surprising amount of CPU depending on the page, but I run a lot of other things which are CPU intensive, when you wouldn't think they would be this day and age. So that's why I wanted to point out that Desktop speed is quite significant for some of us out here.
Let's assume given I found an 8 core processor meets my needs that I probably monitor things such as disk utilization and memory.
Fortunately I also run a high speed SSD at 550 MB/sec, and although my ram is a bit low (Only 8 GB) I haven't hit that bottleneck yet. It really just comes down to un-optimized code, or I'm underestimating the complexity of what I'm doing.
People spend too much anyway. I paid 80$ for a huawei y-530. Dual core 1.2 ghz, 512mb of ram.
It does netflix, youtube, music, email, and all that other fun stuff, even some games with decent 3d graphics. I really don't need more out of my phone.

I know if someone comments to me on it now I'd say it. I also generally refute any online review from most places. Generally I only accept personal experiences or from people I trust.

Maybe they're amazing mechanics, or accountants, but that hand eye co-ordination to play video games well? Not everyone has it, a lot of people don't really. Or you play video games a few times a month only, You're casual or occasional gamers, and the gaming world isn't made up of you. The game sales, isn't from casual / occasional gamers. It's from average gamers.
And we also still lose to 'hard core' gamers, we make up the majority of the gaming community, I am part of this crowd. Know how I know this? Because I play with these people on average during my average amount of time playing games.
Their average skill level is comparable to my average skill level. We do run into those who kick our ass, we have a less sensitive ego and shrug it off.

Default minecraft vanilla installations with default graphics pack eats like 800 MB of ram. Cpu is not used that much.
Now, the mod pack I put together, uses 2.3GB of ram for the client and a lot more CPU. Mods aren't designed for performance, more for compatibility, which means they drastically increase resource requirements. If they were developed by a single team and placed directly into the game, you would see a significant performance boost for those 'mods'
Because you purchased the name, you can develop Minecraft 2, DLC content for the original or a sequel, and the players who already purchased Minecraft will likely purchase a sequel..meaning....it's worth the purchase.
Clones don't do so well, because those who are interested in that kind of game, I will make a broad assumption here, won't hide it, probably own Minecraft, and the clones can't compete with the current modding community. So it's hard to take off.

You got this cool prototype that has a lot of potential, but you want to make it soar. To do that, you'll need funding for wages, to pay for your expenses while you devote time to it, for licenses, for materials if it's not digital, for equipment to make it. Then you hit up kick starters.
If your ideas were fantastic enough to have absolutely nothing but an idea written on paper that will get you funding, you'd hit up a developer / corporation who is willing to fund you.
Also, maybe a lot of people didn't think the concept was as good as you thought it was, and that people wanted to take that chance on it.
