I agree with you, and I would think a charge of treason would be unreasonable. But it would not suprise me that some military hot-head in this 'time of war' would attempt to shut down a service which offered by a US company that specifically aids and provides information to people in an enemy country during war (if it were World War II, you think a US/UK map manufacturer wouldn't get in trouble for selling maps of the country & it's bases to Germany)?

I don't agree with it, but perhaps if someone in the Government did have the gall to accuse Google of such a thing (which I see as conceivable given that they attacked a country because a small number hijacked a plane - and then suggested the whole country had made a 'declaration of war'), then it would serve to highlight how feeble the grounds for this 'war' actually are. Perhaps the Supreme Court might actually come to the conclusion that no official declaration of war was ever issued. It would be good to have some official body actually say it, rather than have this unreliable inflammatory drivel spouted by politicians for CNN in the record books.

Listen, some people see free software in a negative light: when something goes wrong, who are they going to complain to, a mailing list? OpenOffice may become the standard office tool someday, but not everyone (and I would think the majority: I use linux 24/7, but if I was responsible for a base of OTHER people, I'm not sure I would want to abandon a company funded $3000 existing Office suite for OpenOffice, a tool which I have NOT had years of experience in). Perhaps switchting to StarOffice would have people in less of a panic, especially if they needed help.

Strangers will adopt to OO when more people are using it. This will probably happen quicker in places like France, where the Government is pushing Open Source migration first (it leads to a perception of reliability - that matters to people more than cost, and that takes time). Fortunately, Star Office already has a decent industry reputation. I've used it on campus - it's decent.

If they see flaws in MS-OSs (as I do), point Joe Shmoe to Apple - it's the best alternative.

My linux desktop is more customised and intelligent than an Apple Desktop will be (as far as I'm concerned) because I've been configuring my bashrc & enlightenment config files for over a year - and always adding/evolving. Everything is automatic and on cron or timeout (from closing a open eterms to switching virtual desktops from the multimedia screen or browser screen to the blank default one automatically at 6am). I don't expect people to spend as much time as I have. Apple's a good gateway into the joys of a configurable / automatable system (it's how Joe's going to discover the console).

Someone uses it because Systemantic or whoever didn't get to it in time (or couldn't afford to), and bam some critical computer goes down, when a patch could have been deployed first. Reported by Serge (25.07.01 08:31:49):
You probably have a bad overwrite head. We use 4 MDS 302/303 at our local radiostation and had a lot of trouble with them. Mostly it was related to broken overwrite heads (yes you can break them if you force the disk in !) And believe me how careless our DJs handle those units! Other problem, also related to the overwrite head is a broken kapton ribbon cable. This is a very common problem and is related to a design fault by SONY. Whilst the head moves right/left it streches the ribbon cable thal comes along from the back side. resulting in a crack sooner or later that disables the overwrite head. Replacement costs for a new head are around 3000 BEF good luck: -SERGE-

Sony charges $100 (more in Europe) for an inevitable problem, for a minidisc player that cost ~$400 at the time. Newer Minidisc player designs were still (and are still, from the diagrams I have seen posted) still made this way. Good for Sony returns income. They charge a LOT.

I was also going to get a Walkman phone (to replace it!), assuming you pay more for the quality brand of Walkman (again).
I was going to, until I read these reviews like this, which stated that at low volumes there was a definite audible hiss (a hiss in a walkman, c'mon), which was not regarded as a bug, but actually a bugfix since to counteract digital distortion at high volumes.

I don't go out of my way to not like Sony (actually I used to play into media hype quite alot, and like I said, I assumed it was the best because it was Sony Walkman), but regardless of whether you can drop the thing from a metre high, the quality just isn't as good (don't forget, this a mass electronic corporation for public consumers, not necessarily professionals). Their newer stuff just isn't reliable, and you can get better from firms which are actually trying to make the best product, and not just ride a wave of consumer assumptions & prior reputation.

Yeah that's probably because America's the result of invading another country and taking it over, burk. Don't forget that.

Seriously though, I don't live in America but I have noticed that being a country that is the amalgamation of many other cultures of the world is done no where better on earth than in the US - and it's probably to do with the fact that everyone is an immigrant from somewhere else. New York is one of the most colourful and enjoyable places I've been - that's some people's thing, other people hate it. You're always going to have a hick backbone (or some form of Nationalist party) in the population who don't want people to travel over the earth, but people don't get as much social grief for maintaining another culture in the US as they would in parts of Europe. And that is a good thing I think. That said, I also appreciate that it's annoying when you have sects of a town just maintaining it's own ethnicity and not mixing (that's a form of racism in itself). But I think that people are more entitled to do that in the US (I reckon). Just check your roots if you disagree.

It varies from person to person. I myself would rather be in NY or SF because of it's diversity (I like that) - but some people hate new people coming into their town, and only want to mix with their own. They think they own parts of the earth because they've had some ancestory in it.

along with the Pimp's reasons above, I could never afford the games I wanted when I was a kid - they all cost ~$50.

Plus I find platforms games more fun and skillful - I have yet to see something like those cool minecart levels (like the speed and timing required) in the Donkey Kong Country recreated in a 3d game. You get the very occasional platform game for newer consoles, but they're not as great as the entire nintendo backcatalogue put together.
Additionally, since I have a PS2, and Sega has released the Sonic series (again, I had sonic 1 + 2, but the following ones, as much as I wanted them - spoilt friends did though), I can get Sega classic reissues on other platforms. Nintendo doesn't seem to licence. I could just get a snes controller/adapter/pc roms, but wouldn't it be cool to play an old-school game on a giant flatscreen tv? These games mean a lot more to me. It's not rebuyng on new-media - I never had them on the first place (although true, if I was in your position I probably wouldn't bother, unless I wanted new games). This should be the last console I'll need for the next 10 years (and get me back into casual gaming) - I don't find consoles basing their merits on hardware statistics to have as much shelf-life.

That said, I'm not going to appreciate not being able bend my controller to snapping point during high-tension moments (the Donkey kong level where the green slime is rising and you have to hop platforms up the screen really fast).
