  2. Re:let the cracking begin... on Rijndael Picked for AES · · Score: 1

The referenced table is based on the assumption of a BRUTE FORCE attack, most cracks of "modern encryption" are made on a weekness in the algorithm that limits the key space that needs to be searched to something well below the full bit size of the key.

Also a distributed crack can take place in much less time than the chart because the key space is being searched in parallel and not one at a time.

2040 is very optimistic for the length of saftey of this algorithm.

Good point, if I had mods I'd mod you up. It is my story submission, and I based my brief on CNN's story. I wasn't intentionally misleading :).

  4. Paper more effective but e-mail appropriate. on Million E-mail March · · Score: 2

I realize that most legislators/ businesses/ whoever think paper means more. They are probably right in most cases. E-mails are easy fast and don't require a lot of thought. But since this is an e-topic it might be somewhat appropriate to generate e-noise over it. If you think paper is more effective, send a real letter, this doesn't preclude that, but maybe letting congressionals know the size of the internet community who have an openion on this topic might have some bearing.

You agreed to send a change of e-mail message to everyone in your address book, so you did initiate the message and it really isn't spam because it is a relivant personal correspondance. It however fraud in my eyes when you attach the uneditable remainder of the message to the change of address in first person thus seeming like it came from you.

So I don't think it is spam, but I beleive it is fraud.

    IANAL

I am partially through this book and I have to agree that even though the points are valid, it leans towards fear mongering in tone. I don't think this is based on his mood so much as his business. In this slashdot article there about an "article" by Bruce is more about selling his security company than how to handle the problem.

Maybe some, but I don't think it would be enough to cripple an industry or even exert any pressure on a state.

Most computer professionals I know work in the region they came from. (I live in Kansas City for those interested). Things like friends, family, money, and weather are more likely to determine where someone works than if a state has an anti-hacking law.

I am a programmer and have had problems reported in my apps that were "User Problems". That is the user wasn't using the app as designed. The real problem isn't the user though it is the design of the app. If the app were designed so the user could understand it there wouldn't be a user problem Now I realize that not every app can be usable by every user, but if 90% of problems are the users, then it sounds like the app wasn't designed for 90% of the intended users.
